Science Writing Task Practice 2011-2012

I hypothesize that if I was a scientist studying the rainforest, I would have to go to and examine an actual rainforest. Perhaps I would go to the Amazon rainforest. My plan is to examine the creatures and plants of the rainforest, observe the climate using tools, and analyze the overall life in a rainforest. I personally think that I would have to ask a problem, do research, formulate a hypothesis, collect materials, carry out the experiment (in this case, go to the rainforest), make observations, record data, and then make conclusions. A real scientist would probably do the same. My plan is the scientific method. According to Christiaan Huygens, "...great difficulties are felt at first and cannot be overcome except by starting from experiments...and then by conceiving certain hypotheses..." This quote is relevant to the scientific method because it talks about experiments and hypotheses. Scientists, such as Galileo, follow the scientific method. The four elements of the scientific method are characterizations, hypothesizes, predictions, and experiments. The scientific method is an essential plan. So, if I was a scientist studying the rainforest, I would go to and examine an actual rainforest. Principally, I think that I would examine the creatures and plants of the rainforest if I was a scientist in the study of rainforests. I stated that if I was a scientist studying the rainforest, I would have to go to and examine an actual rainforest. In order to examine the life, I have to go to a rainforest! My hypothesis is supported by that fact. I would probably go to the Amazon rainforest. Perhaps I would take a look at some frogs. I would examine their lifestyle over a certain period of time, maybe a week. I would observe their bodies, and I would conclude which parts were adaptations. Adaptations are things that are changed to help a living thing suit the environment, it lives in. I would see why these adaptations were made; this would show me the general suit of the rainforest. I would also look at the plants of the rainforest. I would take some plants, and I would observe them. I would, once again, look at their adaptations. I would

see what types of plants grow in the rainforest. Are they vascular? Are they nonvascular? Are they mostly mosses? Are they mostly trees? I would ask many questions. After that, I would then make observations, record data, and make my conclusions. So, I would examine the creatures and plants of the rainforest. Subsequently, I would observe the climate using many tools. Once again, my hypothesis is supported; I have to go to the actual place to find out the climate! Climate is the general weather is a given region. I would use tools, such as barometers, anemometers, wind vanes, wind socks, and thermometers, to check the climate. Climate is important because it plays a huge role in meteorology; according to the climate, the life of the rainforest would be different. If it is hot, perhaps living things would have an adaptation to cool them off. If it is freezing, there would not be as many plants as a warm region. You get the idea, dont you? Climate is critical to the study of regions. As I did with the study of life, I would carry out my plan. As a result of the climate being critical, I would observe the climate using many tools. Conclusively, I would analyze the overall life in a rainforest. Obviously, my hypothesis is supported; I would have to go to the actual place to analyze the life! I would examine how living things react to their environment. I would study the animals and make a concluding food chain model. I would see if it is a good biome for humans. I would see the struggles and the benefits! Once again, I would carry out my plan. Basically, I would study the life of a rainforest. I would step into the animals and plants shoes. So, I would analyze the overall life in a rainforest. As you can see per my metacognition, in order to be a scientist in the studies of the rainforest, you would have to go to and examine an actual rainforest, such as the Amazon rainforest. My plan is to examine the creatures and plants of the rainforest, observe the climate using tools, and analyze the overall life in a rainforest. The four elements of the scientific method

are characterizations, hypothesizes, predictions, and experiments. The scientific method is the overall plan. Basically, it is the plan of asking a problem, doing research, formulating a hypothesis, collecting materials, carrying out the experiment (in this case, going to the rainforest), making observations, recording data, and then making conclusions. Thus, if I was a scientist studying the rainforest, I would use the scientific method.
