BISHOP CHALLONER

CATHOLIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

POLICY : INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

At Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School we define inclusive education as the process of
increasing the participation in learning, thereby raising education standards for all.

OUR POLICY

….. is focused on the principles and practice of creating a comprehensive learning community by:

• Our admission policy is fair and just to all abilities of children

• Establishing an entitlement to the opportunities offered by education
• Striving for excellence for all learners
• Responding positively to difference and diversity
• Promoting effective partnerships
• Building capacity for inclusion
• Inclusion is implicit in all our policies and strategies

OUR PRINCIPLES

• ENTITLEMENT
All Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate Students have equal rights to the opportunities offered by the
schools. This includes the right to attend a mainstream school, to have access to a broad and balanced
curriculum and to join in the social life of the school. They also are entitled to an education which
ensures continuity and progression from pre-school to post 16.

• EXCELLENCE
The school is aiming for excellence by increasing aspirations, expectations and achievement at all
levels. The school is seeking the participation of all students in learning which leads to the highest
possible level of achievement. We support the approach of central government in emphasising the need
for high expectation for children experiencing special education needs, and for effective preventative
strategies.

• DIVERSITY
We welcome the rich contribution that difference and diversity make to our learning communities. This
diversity may include learners with, for example, different patterns of attainment, with different
backgrounds, with different languages, from different ethnic groups. Diversity demands a positive and
inclusive approach. Wherever possible, we will ensure that mainstream provision is able to
accommodate a wide range of need.

• PARTNERSHIP
Partnership support for learning is crucial if learners’ needs are to be met effectively and rates of
progress to accelerate. The best results are achieved when parents, schools, statutory services and
voluntary organisations work in active partnership with the community and share a holistic approach to
support. Learners themselves, parents and carers and other partners need to collaborate and contribute
to the progress of review and decision-making about needs and provision. All partners also need to
engage in dialogue about development, planning and the achievement of targets.
