The Lenape Regional High
School District board members
were honored for their service
during the Jan. 30 board of educa-
tion meeting.
Superintendent Carol Birn-
bohm presented board members
with plaques for School Board
Recognition Month, held in Janu-
ary. Gov. Christie originally desig-
nated the month.
Each member was presented
with a plaque identifying his or
her years of service on the board.
As a coach, I found it effective
when I saw something occurring
at a game or practice to name
what I saw. I would stop what I
saw and reward it, said Birn-
bohm, a former lacrosse coach.
It was my method of ensuring
the good things on the field done
by some individuals became good
things all team members strive
for.

A Shawnee High School senior
has received a national award for
his community service.
Eligibility for the Presidents
Volunteer Service Award means
working for an eligible charitable
organization for a certain num-
ber of documented hours.
I was awarded the gold level of
the award because I volunteered
over 250 hours in one year, said
Matt O'Rorke, a Shawnee High
School senior.
According to a release about
ORorkes award, the national
award, presented through The
Presidents Council on Service
and Civic Participation, was es-
tablished in 2003 to honor Ameri-
cans who inspire others to engage
in volunteer service. The award
recognizes citizens who have vol-
unteered in excess of 250 docu-
mented hours per year to specific
charitable organizations. The
program continues as an initia-
tive of the Corporation for Na-
tional and Community Service to
encourage sustained commit-
ment to civic participation and to
inspire others to make service a
central part of their lives.
The award came as a surprise
to ORorke, whose mom, Karen,
broke the news after finding out
from one of ORorkes co-workers
at the Food Bank of South Jersey.
ORorke has been spending his
time at the food bank, assisting
the needy all year round.
Its pretty cool to be recog-
nized for trying to help people
who need food, but I would think
most people would try to do the
same thing if they had the oppor-
tunity to help, he said. I knew
how many local people are in
need of basic things, especially in
tough economic times. The most
important thing to me is that hun-
gry people in this area are getting
food.
The food bank operates out of
Pennsauken in Camden County.
According to the website, The
Food Bank of South Jersey is the
largest source of government and
non-government food assistance
in South Jersey. The food bank is
the only major agency in South
Jersey whose mission is to elimi-
nate hunger and malnutrition by
ensuring surplus food reaches
people in need. Its centralized
food donation and distribution
system is a vital community link
ensuring that low-income and dis-
advantaged residents can access
free groceries and wholesome
meals from a charitable food
provider in their neighborhood.
ORorke began his work there
six years ago when he needed to
accrue community service hours
for his confirmation at church.
The first collection was suc-
cessful enough to maintain his in-
terest in helping the organiza-
tion.
The food bank is a great place
to volunteer, said ORorke. Be-
sides the food collection drives, I
have worked at the food bank
sorting donations and dividing
food into categories for distribu-
tion. ORorke makes sure the
food being donated is not past its
expiration date.
Each of ORorkes collections
resulted in hundreds of pounds of
food per day, per food drive. He
has collected thousands of
pounds of food for those in need.
To further his efforts, ORorke
holds neighborhood food drives
throughout the year.
I also have had food drives for
the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife
Center and hope to have a drive
for them before I leave for college.
Thats a great organization to
help, too, said ORorke.
Currently, he is gearing up for
this years project involving the
Medford Township School Dis-
trict, the Medford Students
March Against Hunger.
I think last year there were
seven schools that participated.
Each school drive takes place
over a four-day period throughout
the month of March, said
ORorke.
ORorke will begin sending no-
tices out to the schools in late Feb-

The Medford Township Police
Criminal Investigations Bureau,
in conjunction with the Medford
Township fire marshal, has re-
ported an ongoing investigation
of a series of suspicious fires
being set in Medford.
According to officials, the first
of three fires was reported on
Jan. 6.
Medford Township Police, fire
and EMS, as well as Medford
Lakes and Tabernacle Fire, re-
sponded to an abandoned struc-
ture engulfed in flames on Dixon-
town Road.
According to police, the now-
collapsed structure belongs to an
elderly female from Shamong.
Upon further investigation of
the incident, police discovered
the fire was intentionally set.
The second and third fires,
both reported at different times
on Jan. 21, led officials to the area
of Taunton Boulevard near the
entrance to the Village of
Taunton Forge and the wooded
area between Heath Road, Win-
ston Court, and Tuckerton Road
According to officials, the fire
reported in the area of Tuckerton
Road was larger than the fire in
the area of Taunton Boulevard.
Firefighters contained the
brush fire to an approximate area
of 100 feet by 150 feet and it was
eventually extinguished, accord-
ing to the report.
No additional fires have been
reported since Jan. 21, according
to police.
According to Lt. Jeffrey Wagn-
er, persons of interest have been
identified in the case. Police will
not be releasing any further infor-
mation of the suspects identity
due to the ongoing investigation.
Were seeking the publics
help, said Wagner. Especially if
they have seen any information
on social media, were asking
them to report it to us for leads.
Wagner is asking for residents
to pay attention to social media
feeds for anyone bragging about
criminal activity related to the
case.

On Friday, Feb. 8, jazz bands
from more than 10 area high
schools will compete for top hon-
ors at Shawnee High School.
The annual Shawnee Jazz Fes-
tival will feature many sweet and
sassy jazz standards and some
very accomplished young musi-
cians, including several talented
members of the All South Jersey
Honors Band.
This will be a showcase for
the tremendous musical talent we
have in our South Jersey
schools, said Sara Cureton,
event coordinator and member of
the Shawnee Band Parents Asso-
ciation (SBPA), which organized
the jazz fest.
Many of the Shawnee students
participated in workshops last
year at the Berklee College of
Music in Boston. Music depart-
ment faculty members from area
colleges and universities will
serve as judges for the Feb. 8
event.
With so many jazz bands par-
ticipating this year, there will be
music to satisfy every jazz enthu-
siast, from swing and Latin to
measured ballads, said Shawnee
Director of Bands Nick Rotindo.
Our Jazz Ensemble plays with
the heart and soul of real jazz mu-
sicians and will close the concert
with a couple of great numbers.
Were very proud of them all, and
appreciate all of the community
support.
The music festival runs from 5
to 10 p.m.
Tickets, available at the door,
are $8 for general admission and
$5 for students and seniors. Sen-
iors with a Lenape Regional High
School District Golden Pass are
admitted free.
A variety of foods will be avail-
able for purchase in the cafeteria.
In addition, the SBPA will raffle
off an iPad mini at the event. Raf-
fle proceeds will benefit the SBPA
scholarship fund.
The jazz competition will be
held in the Shawnee High School
auditorium, located at 600 Taber-
nacle Road in Medford.
Jazz festival is Feb. 8

N
ew Jersey is about one year
away from making history.
For the first time, the Super
Bowl will be played in an open air sta-
dium in a region that is, in early Feb-
ruary, cold. Really cold.
The 2014 Super Bowl is set for Feb. 2
at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
Its home to both the Jets and the Gi-
ants, so, in theory, and perhaps only in
theory, they could meet up for the big
game.
Area football fans have obvious rea-
sons to be excited. The trip up the
Turnpike, for example, is a lot easier to
make than one to Florida or New Or-
leans. Theres just something about
having the big game played in ones
back yard that also gets the blood to
pumping a little faster.
But even if you dont know Eli Man-
ning from Eli Whitney, you should care
about this game. The benefits to the
state are huge.
Most tangible will be the economic
impact. The 2014 host committee esti-
mates that about $550 million will be
pumped into the local economy from
tourism and other game-related activi-
ties. That number could fluctuate a bit
depending on which teams make it.
Local teams might not bring in as
many tourists.
Fans are going to stay at hotels, eat
at restaurants and frequent local busi-
nesses. That not only helps the local
businesses, it also generates tax rev-
enue.
Theres also something to be said for
the positive national, and even interna-
tional, attention the game brings to the
region. It can make New Jersey more
attractive, for example, to large con-
ventions and other events that can
bring thousands of people to the state
to stay and spend money.
In any event, were excited about
New Jersey making a splash on such a
prominent stage. It means many good
things for the state.
in our opinion
One year, and counting
A year from now, we will be having a Super time
Kicking off
In about a year, the NFLs biggest game
will take place in New Jersey. While
thats great news for football fans, its
also enough to get non-fans excited.
The economic benefits associated with
hosting such a big event can have a
far-reaching positive impact.

Medford goes above and
beyond for Toys for Tots
The Marines have completed the final
inspection for Toys for Tots, and they
would like to thank Medford and our
neighbors for going above and beyond!
This year, our sponsors and the folks
who attended the events, donated over
2,700 toys, and $2,200 in monetary dona-
tions.
Thanks to the kindness and generosity
of the people in our area, close to 4,000 fam-
ilies had a brighter holiday.
As the Medford coordinator, I would like
to thank the following sponsors for their
help, energy, and for dedicating some space
in their place of business to collect toys.
Boy Scout Troop 26, Shawnee volunteers,
and young Boy and Girl Scouts, for being
part of our Halloween Parade float.
Marlton Roller Hockey, for surprising us
with a tremendous amount of wonderful
toys.
Thanks to the Medford Sunrise Rotary,
for squeezing a seven-ton vehicle into the
Dickens Festival.
Thanks to Bob Marsdale, for coordinat-
ing and performing in another
fantastic, and successful Comedy Night
Benefit.
Thanks to new supporters, Wonder
World Toys, Queen Bee Boutique, and Al
Finklestien of Edward Jones. And a huge
thank you to Murphy's Markets, Kids
Ahead Consulting, 7 Deuce Sports, and
Charles Bruce Salon, for your ongoing sup-
port, and to our local newspapers, for shar-
ing our information.
On behalf of the 3rd Battalion, 14th
Marines at Ft Dix, I sincerely appreciate all
of the effort and dedication the people in
our area have shown to the Toys for Tots
campaign.

ruary. The schools will have a set
time during the month of March
to donate food.
The people of Medford are
usually pretty generous and have
donated thousands of pounds of
food. I am hoping this years food
drive will be even more success-
ful, he said.
ORorkes numerous hours of
volunteerism have helped inspire
his future college major.
I am planning to be a business
major in college. The food collec-
tion drives involve a lot of organi-
zation, planning and dealing with
people. There are definitely as-
pects of the food drives that will
benefit me in my college and busi-
ness career, he said, adding a
sports management minor would
be of interest to him to further
his opportunities for a career.
He is also involved at school.
ORorke is a member of the Na-
tional Honor Society, senior cap-
tain of the Shawnee cross coun-

Shawnee Leadership Academy.
So far, he has applied to Rut-
