Lab I: States of Matter Title: States of Matter Purpose: I believe the purpose of this lab was to create the three states of matter. Prelab: What is kinetic energy? Kinetic energy is a energy that buildups during motion.
What are states of matter? Solid, Plasma, Gas, and liquid. What do the states of matter depend on? The bonds between atoms that hold them together. How can you identify each state of matter? Touch it, gas and plasma you can pass through, liquids are the same but you will feel resistance, and solids you cannot pass through. Why is it important to identify each state of matter? Well, If you were doing the high dive, and you couldnt tell the difference between a liquid and a solid, you would jump on the concrete.

Data: Name/Number Day 1 Mixture 1 Mixture 2 Mixture 3 Day 2 Mixture 1 Mixture 2

Day 1 Ingredients 10cc starch, 50cc H20 5cc borax, 100cc H20 5cc borax, N/A 1cc food coloring, 20cc glue. Changes Turned white. Borax settled to the bottom. 40cc H2o Observations There was no apparent chemical reaction. No apparent chemical reaction.

Mixture 3

1cc food coloring, 30cc of glue.

N/A N/A Formed completely The glue mixed solid clump of glue. with the water and the borax and became a rubbery substance. The glue collected The glue became a in a bag. bag that held more glue on the inside.

Discussion:

I discussed with Francesco Mixture: Common Uncommon Differences Similarities #1 Turned N/A N/A No other white change #2 Borax N/A N/A No other stayed at change bottom

#3

Borax stayed at bottom

N/A

N/A

No other change

Day 2: #2

#3

The glue N/A hardened and resembled a scrambled egg. The glue N/A resembled a bag, with more glue being held.

Ours was No other orange. change. Theirs was yellow.

Ours was No other blue. change. Theirs was green.

Conclusion: 1. What state of matter is oobleck? Oobleck was a liquid. When you touched it, your hand could pass through easily with barely any resistance. 2. What state of matter is glorax? Glorax was a solid. The glue was completely solid yet flexible. 3. What state of matter is glurch? Glurch was more of a colloid, because the glue was not completely solid, on the outside it was solid, but when broken open it was revealed to still have liquid glue inside. 4. What changes occurred in each mixture? In mixture one, the starch mixed with the water, turning it white. In mixture two, The borax just sank to the bottom and did nothing. The glue the hardened into a complete solid. In mixture three, the borax settled to the bottom, but the glue turned into a bag 5. How is all of the matter alike in each mixture? They all were made of some sort of liquid. 6. How is all of the matter different in each mixture? They were all different states of matter once finished.

7. Describe all four states of matter in your own words: Solid is something that has strong molecular bonds, that does no tend to break apart. Liquids have weaker molecular bonds, giving them the tendency to flow. Gas and plasma have the weakest, and they will expand to fill the container. 8. Describe what you enjoyed about this lab: I liked this lab because there were multiple stages, and we got to touch all of the stuff.
