AD wants to transform Dexter athletics

Dexter Interim Athletic Director Mike Bavineau took the opportunity during his routine athletic update at this weeks school board meeting to outline his plan to transform athletics. Bavineau framed Dexter athletics as a selling point for the district and the community. He called for renewed investment in and support of athletics from district administration. (Dexter athletics) are in the paper, were on everything, were really a model of what people see and they can draw conclusions based on what they see, Bavineau said. A grant from the Dexter Education Foundation supported the Swiss Fest this week at Dexter High School and Mill Creek Middle School. The event highlighted the Switzerland and encouraged foreign language studies. By the way, servus means hello and good bye. For more, see page 3-B.

Couple shares volunteer honor

Faith In Action has bestowed Volunteer of the Year honors on a Lima Township couple. Carol Bowers was chosen from Faith in Action while her husband Harry Drury was chosen for the senior Meals on Wheels program through the Senior Nutrition efforts. More than 100 people gathered Jan. 26 to celebrate the work accomplished at Faith in Action through many volunteers with the annual recognition dinner at Chelsea Community Hospital. Volunteers sort clothing, clean of sidewalks, help people fill food orders, sign out medical equipment and welcome those who walk through the door. Each of the two organizations, FIA and Senior Nutrition, pick a volunteer of the year to highlight remarkable and long service. Faith In Action Volunteer Coordiantor Doug Smith said Bowers is very deserving of the honor. Carol is great, he said. She has volunteered at FIA for over 10 years, is detail oriented in organizing and keeping the clothing room clean,

Burton Hoey, the owner of Jennys Farm Market just outside Dexter, has pleaded no contest to two counts of animal cruelty. The charges stem from a Sept. 6 seizure by the Humane Society of Huron Valley. The Humane Society took two horses, four donkeys and two goats from the property, which were listed as neglected and sick. The animals have been in the Humane Societys care since the seizure and will be up for adoption. Weve been to Jennys Farm Market numerous times over the past 10 years because of complaints of abused and neglected animals, said Matt Schaecher, director of Animal Cruelty Investigation and Rescue. We see this conviction as a victory for the many animals that have suffered. We know there are many community members and families that will feel the same. Hoey characterized the animal seizure as unnecessary back in September 2012. They were very aggressive ... they could have left the horses here and said that I was doing something wrong and this is what you could do differently, Hoey told Heritage Media after the seizure. I just think its another chapter in the Lets get Jennys market situation. Hoey pleaded no contest on Jan. 30. Sentencing is set for March 28.
