2013 Volleyball Rules

RULE 1: TEAM FORMATION

Section 1. Roster 1. Number of Players. A team must have at least 8 people in their roster. There is no maximum number of players allowed on a team roster. All players must be listed on the roster, sign an insurance waiver and pay league fees. 2. Adding Players. Players may be added at any time until the final tee shirt order date (2/15/13). After that time, until the third week of play, a team must drop a player before it may add a player. The dropped player must provide his/her tee shirt to the added player. After the third week of play, team rosters are frozen. Teams must provide an updated roster to LAA at the end of the third week. See LAA for additional roster forms. 3. Players on the Court. A team can field no more than 6 players at a time. At least 2 of the players on the court must be women. A team must have at least 5 players at start and finish of the match, of which at least 2 must be women in order to avoid a forfeit. 4. Playing Short. A team may play with a full team of 6 if its opponent is short players. 5. Coaches Responsibilities. Keep reminding your players that this is a SOCIAL league and unsportsmanlike conduct will ensure them a seat on the curb. Please take your team back to our sponsor bar for the SOCIAL part of the league. Section 2. Player Restrictions 1. Age. Players must be 18 years old at the start of the season. 2. League Membership. Players may only play for one team. 3. Violations. Teams that violate the rules in this section will forfeit the entire seasons games and must pay a fine. Section 3. Uniforms 1. Tee shirts. LAA will provide each team with tee shirts for its roster. All players must wear the LAA tee shirt for each game or they will not be permitted on the court of play. 2. Permitted Alterations. Players may add their names, numbers, and other similar personal information to their tee shirts. Players may also add depictions of the American flag. Players additions may not cover the LAA or sponsor logo. 3. Excluded Alterations. Players may not add any corporate information to their tee shirts, including website addresses and company names. Players may not include any offensive material on their tee shirts. Commissioner has the exclusive right to determine whether additions are offensive. 4. Penalty. Players who do not wear the official LAA tee shirt will be sidelined for that game. Players who are caught exchanging shirts will also be sidelined, and if the players are not listed on the team roster the team will forfeit the game and must pay a fine. Teams with players who violate alteration guidelines must purchase new LAA shirts ($15/shirt), and the team will forfeit all games until it has paid for the new shirts.

RULE 2: MATCH AND FORFEITS

Section 1. Courts 1. Court Location. All games will be played at Forrest Rose Gymnasium (1592 Granville Pike, Lancaster, OH 43130). The game will be played on an indoor basketball court. 2. The lines for the volleyball court will be taped on and LAA will try to maintain the tape. If there is a piece of tape missing do your best for a fair assessment of in/out. Dont argue about it, you look like you have no life when you do that. Bring missing tape to LAA attention. 3. If it is not the third hit and the ball is on your side of the net and stays on your side of the net all overhead surfaces are in play including, but not limited to; basketball hoops, ceiling

structure, heating & cooling ducts, lights, etc. If you hit the ball, it hits an overhead structure, then lands on the other side of the net, then the ball was out once it hit the overhead surface. 4. Out of bounds surfaces include, but not limited to; walls, bleachers, chairs, tables, play equipment, etc. Section 2. Match 1. Matches will be the best two (2) out of three (3) games played to fifteen (15) by service scoring. ONLY the team serving can score. 2. A game started will be completed. 3. Regular season matches may end in a tie if time expires. 4. Championship match of the playoffs will be best three (3) out of five (5). 5. If a team does not have the required number of players at game time it will be a forfeit of a game. If a team does not have the required number of players 10 minutes after game time, the match is a forfeit.

RULE 3: THE GAME

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The ball must be served (either overhand or underhand) from behind the back line. If the serve hits the net while going over the net it is still live. The opposing team may not spike or block a serve. If any part of the ball hits the line, it is in. The ball may only be legally contacted only from the elbow to the wrist and with a closed fist. It may also be set with the ends of the fingers, so long as it is not lifted. Contact with the ball must be a clear hit. No palming, lifting, pushing or carrying of the ball allowed. Any palming or pushing of the ball will be called a lift. This will be a tough call to self-police, but just dont let people get carried away with lifting the ball. The ball cannot be contacted twice in succession by the same player; however, simultaneous contacts by more than one player on same team are allowed and are considered as one play. Players participating in such simultaneous contact may participate in the next play. Simultaneous contact by players on opposing teams also permit players involved to participate in next play; however, if this results in ball being shortly held it is a double fault and played over. Touching net at any time is a foul, except when a hard driven spike forces net into a player while he/she is on his/her side of the court. Any player that touches the net after spiking a ball, the play will be called a side out. A player may step on the centerline but not on the floor in the opponents court. Any part of a players body may be in the air below the net and beyond the centerline if he/she does not interfere with opponents play by either touching ball or opponent. When players on opposing teams commit fouls simultaneously, it is a double foul and played over. Points are not scored on a double foul. Three hits maximum each side; except when ball touches blockers hand(s) (three more hits are legal). A team must rotate clockwise every time they get a side out on the other team and receive the serve. After serving, then rotating across the back line, each player must rotate out and the new player rotating in takes the right front line position. At all times there must be at least 2 women on the floor. If a team only has 2 women they do not have to rotate out. Teams may rotate injured players out from other positions. Two women must still be on the floor at all times or it is a forfeit of the game. Each team will be one (1) thirty (30) second timeout per team per game. There will be no referees provided by LAA. Police yourself and remember this is a SOCIAL league meant for fun, not competition. Each team captain is expected to keep their team updated to the latest set of rules. These rules are effective as of 2/6/13
