North Americas sports legends attend Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Classic
After a two year hiatus and last years rain-filled outing, the Fergie Jenkins Foundation was glad to see relatively clear skies for the 12th Annual Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Golf Classic in September. Golfers joined special guest celebrities in a round of golf at the beautiful Rockway Glen Golf Course and Estate Winery in St. Catharines to celebrate another great charity event. The three-day tournament kicked off on Sept. 19 with a celebrity bass fishing tournament in the Niagara River with a wine and cheese social taking place the following evening in the Rockway Glen banquet facility. Jesse Barfield and Kelly Gruber, former CFLer Willie Bethea, Chicago Blackhawks Hall of Famer Pierre Pilote and ex-Kansas City Royals outfielder Willie Wilson. Former Canadian heavyweight boxing champion George Chuvalo was also on hand for the event. While Chuvalo did not play golf, he made his way around the course, having his picture taken with the golfers. Chuvalo was a special guest at the event supporting his own charity, Fight Against Drugs, as he shared the story of his foundation at the dinner banquet the followed the golf event.

The Fergie Jenkins Museum successfully reinvents the wheel

Featured prominently inside the United Club in Wrigley Field, there exists a custom-built bat and baseball wheel, seven feet in diameter with the Cubs logo in the center. The 32-bat, 64ball creation is a typical conversation piece and one of the great features inside the teams exclusive dining club. Time and time again, Fergie Jenkins has been the guest of the Cubs and dined in the United Club. And time and time again, the wheel has captivated his interest, to the point where he wanted one built in the new Fergie Jenkins Museum in Canada. Plans were put in motion to reconstruct Fergies own version of the wheel, but first, the Foundation needed some help from a pair of dedicated sponsors. Louisville Slugger and Rawlings Canada have long Rawlings Major League Basebeen great balls and vintage Louisville sponsors of Slugger bats form the basis of the wheel. the Fergie Jenkins Foundation, supplying bats and baseballs for charity events over a number of years. And when they were informed of Fergies dream to build a baseball wheel in his own museum, both organizations were quick to offer their support. Using Major League Baseballs and replica Louisville Slugger bats from Fergies playing days, the Foundation entrusted these items to Dave Swan and Ken Montgomery, a pair of local Stelco carpenters with a vision to succeed. After just two days, the project was completed. as reference points. The placement of each bat and ball had to be so exact in order for each quarter to match and ultimately create the perfect circle. The wheel arrived at the Foundation offices in mid-November and quickly took its place on the wall inside the new facility. As baseball greats visit the museum over time, they will have the opportunity to autograph the wheel and add to the evolving story of the museum.

Local carpenter Dave Swan carefully lays out the bats and baseballs in a perfect circle, setting the stage for mounting on the circular frame.

Montgomery and Swan created a circular wooden template frame, cut into quarters to serve as the mount for the bats and balls. Using precise measurements and the utmost care, the bats and balls were carefully placed in a circle, using the quarter frames

The finished product, displayed prominently inside the Fergie Jenkins Museum in St. Catharines.

The frame is built and the bats and balls are carefully mounted. Swans final task is screwing everything into place, finishing the wheel in just two days.

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation would like to thank Dave Swan and Ken Montgomery for their carpentry expertise, Louisville Slugger and Rawlings Canada for their donation of product, and the Chicago Cubs for inspiring the idea of the wheel in the first place. We look forward to our own version of this masterpiece, as well as other unique contructions, being focal points of the Fergie Jenkins Museum for years to come.

Our thanks goes out to Sun Media for helping to sponsor this issue of View from the Hill

Local students get their first Fergie Jenkins experience

For years, Brock University in St. Catharines has supplied the Fergie Jenkins Foundation with a number of interns and volunteers. These have usually been students enrolled in the universitys very unique Sport Management undergraduate program, looking for their first practical experience in the working world. The Fergie Jenkins Foundation has successfully provided a venue for aspiring students to develop their skills and understand the nature of working in sports. And really, is there a better boss to have than one of baseballs finest pitchers, and the only Canadian in the National Baseball Hall of Fame? 2012 has seen the largest commitment of Sport Management students volunteer their time at the Fergie Jenkins Foundation. As part of the curriculum, first-year students must complete a mandatory eight-hour volunteer period with a relevant industry. Expectedly, many students jumped at the opportunity to work for Fergie. With the museum still in its early stages of cataloguing, the Foundation welcomed the students with open arms. In the fall, 18 different students spent time volunteering at the Fergie Jenkins Foundation, creating an endless supply of help as we continue to go through Fergies priceless collections and determine what must be displayed in the museum bearing his name. The students were able to immerse themselves in sports memorabilia, a true learning experience as they became educated about Fergies personal accomplishments and his life as a professional athlete. These collections have been turned over to our fulltime museum staff, so that they can utilize their expertise in creating comprehensive and interactive exhibits. The Fergie Jenkins Foundation would like to thank all the Sport Management students at Brock University, as well as the professors and administrators who allowed this partnership to fluorish once again. We look forward to continuing to build our relationship with the university and providing valuable experiences for its students.

Fergies museum continues to take shape

As Fergies museum continues to grow, more and more pieces of memorabilia are being put on display. The latest piece added to the walls is a replica of Fergies 1971 National League Cy Young Award, won while Fergie was a member of the Chicago Cubs, having just completed his fifth consecutive 20-game winning season. The location of Fergies original Cy Young Award continues to be a mystery, formerly owned by actor Charlie Sheen before they were sold at an auction in New York several years back. Nevertheless, we are thrilled to have such an important and exclusive piece added to our museum. Also recently added was Fergies game jersey from when he recorded his 3,000th strikeout, also as a member of the Cubs in 1982.

The Boss Celebrates a Milestone

On November 30, the W Chicago City Center Hotel was the site of a surprise 70th birthday celebration for Fergie Jenkins, who celebrated the milestone event with family, freinds, former teammates and the staff of the Fergie Jenkins Foundation and Chicago Cubs. The surprise party was organized in a collaborative effort between the Foundation and the Cubs, and welcomed nearly 100 people who have impacted Fergies life in one way or another. Fergies former teammates and fellow Hall of Famer Billy Williams took the time out of their busy schedules to attend the evening event and provide well wishes to the finest pitcher to ever don Cubbie blue. Fergie was visibly surprised when he entered Fergie and his wife Lydia cut the cake the hotel ball room to be greeted by the eager crowd. The Cubs and the Foundation had tricked him into coming into town for the weekend, with Fergie believing that he was attending a private dinner with Williams and Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, who was also in attendance. Fergies actual birthday takes place on December 13, which he will likely spend with his wife Lydia at their home in Anthem, AZ. From there, he will travel back to Illinois to do a charity event with Blackhawks Hall of Famer Pierre Pilote, before heading up to his native Chatham, ON, to spend the holidays with his three daughters.

a Look Back at What some of north americas Greatest sports Writers had to say aBout ferGie Jenkins

AS HE SAID, FERGIE IS IN A SPECIAL CLASS

PUBLISHED IN THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE BY: JEROME HOLTZMAN - JAN. 10, 1991
Fortunately for us, there is always a story behind the story. And in 1973, when Ferguson Jenkins, with the able assistance of George Vass, penned his autobiography, this is how he began: After winning my 18th game in the 1972 season, I beckoned to George Langford of the Chicago Tribune and said, On Aug. 30 Im going to have a scoop for you writers. Langford laughed. What are you going to do, Fergie, announce your new eight-point peace proposal? No, Im going to give you a story. Just be there when I win my 20th game. Im going to set the record straight about myself. I think youll be interested. What Im going to say may shock the fans, and maybe they wont take it the right way, I began, But Im going to say it anyway. I no longer want to be categorized with other pitchers. I want people to say that Fergie Jenkins belongs in a class by himself. Thats a great class to be in, and these great Cub players Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Randy Hundley have put me in that class by scoring runs for the team. Im not saying that Im a better pitcher than anyone else, but I have done something that others havent Ive now won 20 games six seasons in a row. Among active pitchers, that puts me in a class by myself.

Jenkins, by the smallest margin ever one vote was elected Tuesday night for enshrinement. He wasnt quite in a class by himself; 78 players previously had been approved by the Baseball Writers Association of America, including 51 pitchers. But these are numbers for accountants, not sports fans. A native Canadian who conquered the perils of Wrigley Field, was and still is Like Nobody Else, which was the title of his book. Jenkins was asked if it made any difference that he was elected by one vote. (Actually, it was by two. He drew 334 votes, one more than necessary.)

nonetheless considerably less than the required 75 percent. Some of the people casting the ballots will have to take a closer look at what Ron Santo did, Jenkins said. Itll probably take some time, but hes a No. 1 candidate, very deserving. A lot of quality people coming up, Jenkins said, indicating that this was the year he had his best chance. I was probably going to be overshadowed. Next year, its Pete Rose, then Reggie Jackson and the Tom Seavers and Don Suttons. I could have been lost in the shuffle. Jenkins finished his career with 284 wins and conceded he probably could have joined the 300-victory club if he had pitched another season or two. I didn`t want to be a ountdown player, he explained. I didnt want to be in a position where everyone would be saying 291, 292. So I stayed home. Jenkins stopped here between planes. He took an early evening flight to Oklahoma City so he could return to his home in nearby Guthrie and be at the bedside of his wife, Maryanne, who was injured seriously in an auto accident. She can`t talk, he said. She is on a respirator. Im anxious to see her. Asked if he thought she was aware of his election, Jenkins replied: I suppose so. Some of the doctors and nurses in the hospital are big baseball fans. Jenkins smiled. Cub fans.

I won a lot of games by one run, he said. Lost a lot by one run, too. Jenkins lost five games by the minimum score in 1968, his second season of 20 victories. The five 1-0 defeats, if memory serves, equaled the major-league high for frustration. He put in a plug for Santo, who once again fell short in the balloting. Santo received 26 percent of the vote, a high for him, but

Val and his wife Diane are longtime supporters of JDRF with their three daughters suffering from juvenile diabetes. Val shared his familys story as he presented Fergie with a check to help support JDRF, one of the many charities supported at this years event. Fergie also made a check presentation for $7,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Niagara Falls, thanking them for their support of our events over the past 12 months. Continued from cover Once again, the Foundation received great support from not only local charities, but local businesses as well. This years tournament was sponsored by businesses such as First Ontario Credit Union, Sun Media, Niagara Falls Hyundai, Saputo, Sleeman, M&M Meat Shops and WestJet to name a few. Without the support of such organizations, events like the Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Classic would not be able to take place and the Foundation is very thankful for their continued support. With the help of good weather and the dedication of many of our supporters, the event was a success and the Foundation looks forward to its next tournament and many more Fergie Jenkins Celebrity Golf Classics in the future.

George Chuvalo added to a new Wall of Fame

The Fergie Jenkins Foundation had a special opportunity this year to partner with a young and talented professional sports artist. At the 12th Annual Fergie Jenkins Celebritity Classic in September, Cortney Wall created a painting of one of the great Canadian sports stars, a one-of-a-kind action piece of former Canadian heavyweight boxing champion George Chuvalo. George is a special man and he has been a close friend of mine for many years, said Fergie. He has supported my charity for a long time and with Cortneys talent and vision, I now have the opportunity to give back to Georges charitable work, too.

Cortney is an accomplished artist who has painted many athletes. Fergie battles Chinook in Niagara adventure

As we all know, Fergie was a multisport athlete, growing up in Chatham, Ontario. He succeeded in every sport he played and is certainly known as a natural born athlete. At a young age, Fergie made the decision to stick to baseball and forget the other sports he played well. Being a Canadian, giving up playing hockey was particularly hard to do. of Niagara Fishing Adventures, who runs a fishing charter business out of Port Dalhousie, Ontario. Fergie and Aldo were on the hunt for the mighty Chinook Salmon, said to be one of the best fish to fight in all of North America.

Fergie Fact
Did you know...

The trade that brought Fergie Jenkins to the Cubs was almost never made. At the time, Cubs general manager John Holland wanted to acquire Orlando Cepeda from the Giants to replace aging slugger Ernie Banks. The Giants said no, and, in 1966, dealt Cepeda to the St. Louis Cardinals instead. Holland ended up dealing with the Phillies, shipping veteran arms Larry Jackson and Bob Buhl to Philadelphia for first baseman John Herrnstein, outfielder Adolfo Phillips, and a third player whom many people believed was simply a throw-in: Canadian relief pitcher Ferguson Jenkins. You know how the rest turned out...

The fish, however, were no match for Fergie and Aldo, as they reeled in 13 catches on the day: three rainbow trout and ten mighty Chinook. The total Fergie and Captain Aldo Nava fishing would have ranked them And while Fergie was on Lake Ontario. among the best in any pro forced to give up team tournament held on Lake sports (besides baseball) Ontario any other day. at a young age, one thing he never lost was his love of hunting and fishing. Local artifacts make their way to Fergies museum

Its no secret that Fergie Jenkins is extremely proud of his black heritage. With his ancestors having come to Canada via the Underground Railroad in the mid1800s, Fergie has always remained a fixture in the Black community, most obviously demonstrated by his commemoration on a Canadian Postage Stamp and resulting cross-country tour during February 2011 in conjunction with Black History Month. And with the Fergie Jenkins Museum in St. Catharines reserving space exclusively dedicated to local Black History and culture, the Foundation was recently the recipient of a generous donation of artifacts from a Black History library in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The Black History wing of the Fergie Jenkins Museum was the result of a $10,000 grant provided two years ago by the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The library in Niagara Falls, which was closing down, was thrilled to turn its artifacts over to Fergie and the Foundation, knowing that their history will be preserved in the facility bearing the name of one of the all-time famous Black Canadians. The dozens of artifacts which will soon be on display in St. Catharines include books, posters and artwork, produced by leading Black individuals in the community, dating back more than 100 years.
