Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Functional Description
General
This manual describes the technical characteristics, applications, installation, and operation of the HS-2 family of multiple channel high speed data I/O modules for the MEGAPLEX-2100 Modular T1/E1 Multiplexer Systems. The HS-2 family includes two module versions, designated HS-2 and MTHS-2, which differ in physical size and the number of channels:

4U-high modules, designated HS-2, are used in the MEGAPLEX-2100 and MEGAPLEX-2104. The user interface connectors (two 25-pin D-type connectors) of these modules are located on the module panels. 6U-high modules, designated MTHS-2 are used in the MEGAPLEX-2100B and MEGAPLEX-2100F. These modules, which are interoperable with the corresponding 4U I/O modules, do not include user interface connectors: instead, these connectors (two 25-pin D-type connectors) are located on interface modules. For the MEGAPLEX-2100F, the interface module is designated IM-DB25/2, IM-TEL50, or IM-S26/4; for the MEGAPLEX-2100B, the interface module is designated IMB-DB25/2, IMB-TEL50, or IMB-S26/4.

Note

In this manual, the generic term HS-2 is used when the information is applicable to all of the module versions, and the term MEGAPLEX is used when the information is applicable to all of the multiplexer versions. The complete designation is used only for information applicable to a specific version. Main Features The HS-2 modules are data sub-multiplexers which provide two high-speed synchronous data channels. Each channel can support data rates of n56 or n64 kbps, where n can be up to 24 for a T1 main link (maximum channel rate of 1536 kbps) and up to 31 for an E1 (CEPT) main link (maximum channel rate of 1984 kbps). Channel data rates, as well as all the operating parameters are controlled by the system management. The interface type can be independently selected for each channel. Two selections are available:

1. V.35. 2. V.11/RS-422. When using the V.11/RS-422 selection, the channel interface can be converted by means of adapter cables to V.36/RS-449, RS-530, or X.21 interfaces. Each channel has local support for the DCD and DSR lines.

The DSR line is ON when the channel is connected, and switches to OFF if the channel is not connected, or is connected but is engaged in a remote loop or BER test. The DCD line is constantly ON, except when communications are not possible because of loss of frame synchronization.

Timing Each HS-2 module channel supports three timing modes:

DCE timing: the HS-2 module channel provides the timing signals to the DTE connected to it. External DCE timing: the HS-2 module channel provides the receive timing signal to the user's DTE, and accepts an external transmit clock. This mode is also called DTE1. DTE timing: the HS-2 module channel accepts the timing signals from the user's equipment, and accepts an external transmit clock. In this case, the HS-2 channel can serve as the timing source for the MEGAPLEX system. This mode is also called DTE2.

A FIFO buffer is used in the transmit path of each module channel, to absorb timing variations. FIFO size can be individually configured. The MEGAPLEX system can automatically select the FIFO size in accordance with the minimum necessary, however when a longer buffer is desired, the user can also manually select the FIFO size. The supported FIFO sizes are 16 bits, 30 bits, 52 bits, and 72 bits. Time Slot Routing The MEGAPLEX system enables the user to select the main link that will carry the data applied to the HS-2 module channels. Moreover, the user can select, for each HS-2 module channel, the main link time slots assigned to that channel in the corresponding T1 or E1 main link frame. User-controlled manual assignment allows the routing of the bit stream generated by each local channel to any other compatible MEGAPLEX channel at the remote site, e.g., to another channel of a high speed module such as HS-703/MTHS-703, HS-2, HS-3, HS-Q, or HS-4, or to another type of module, such as the MBE, etc.

Chapter 2 Module Installation and Operation

2.1 General
This chapter provides installation, configuration, and operation instructions for the HS-2 and MTHS-2 modules. The information presented in this chapter supplements the general installation, configuration and operation instructions for the MEGAPLEX-2100 systems, contained in Part I of the MEGAPLEX-2100 Installation and Operation manual. Before performing any internal settings, adjustment, maintenance, or repairs, first disconnect all the cables from the module, and then remove the module from the MEGAPLEX enclosure. No internal settings, adjustment, maintenance, and repairs should be performed by either the operator or the user; such activities may be performed only by a skilled technician who is aware of the hazards involved. Always observe standard safety precautions during installation, operation, and maintenance of this product.

Warning

Caution

The HS-2 modules contain components sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD). To prevent ESD damage, always hold the module by its sides, and do not touch the module components or connectors.

2.2 Preparation for Installation

The operating mode of the HS-2 modules is controlled by software. In addition, there are several jumpers or switches that select hardware operating conditions, and these may have to be set before installing a module in the MEGAPLEX enclosure. If the factory (default) settings meet your specific requirements, you may skip this Section and proceed with the installation of the module in the equipment enclosure, as explained in Section 2.3. To change the factory settings, proceed as explained below.

Internal Settings on HS Modules

Each HS-2 module has two small plug-in daughter boards called interface changer boards one for each channel. The function of the changer boards is to select the channel interface type: each interface changer board is inserted in the position corresponding to the desired interface type. All the other module functions are programmable by means of the system management. Figure 2-1 identifies the positions of the interface changer boards for a typical module (HS-2), and the setting required for each interface type. The interface changer boards located on the MTHS-2 modules are similarly marked.

2.5 Configuration Instructions

General
This Section provides information on the configuration parameters of the HS-2 and MTHS-2 modules. The configuration activities required to select the desired values of these parameters are performed by means of the management system used to control the MEGAPLEX unit. The instructions appearing in this Section assume that you are familiar with the management system being used: supervision terminal or Telnet (covered by Chapter 3 of the MEGAPLEX-2100 Installation and Operation Manual), or a network management system, e.g., the RADview network management system (refer to the RADview User's Manual for instructions). Channel Parameters Table 2-2 explains the programmable parameters of the HS-2 channels, and their range of values. Table 2-2. Channel Parameters
Parameter Connect Description Determines whether the channel is connected to the selected main link: YES NO Rate (kbps) Channel is connected, and traffic can be carried. Channel is disconnected. You can still program the desired parameters, so the module will be ready to operate when needed.

Specifies the data rate of this channel. The data rate determines the number of time slots allocated to the channel on the selected main link. The data rate is shown both as a multiple of a basic rate (56 or 64 kbps), and as an absolute number in kbps. This representation has the advantage that you can see at a glance the required number of time slots. The range of allowable multiples is 1 through 24 for a T1 main link, and 1 through 31 for an E1 link. Remember that the maximum (24 or 31) is only the theoretical limit: when selecting the rate, you must take into consideration the number of time slots that are used by, or must be reserved for, other channels and/or other modules using the same main link. Moreover, if an E1 main link is used and the framing method is G.732S, you must also reserve one time slot (time slot 16) for signaling.

Clock Mode

Selects the clock mode used by the channel: DCE, EXTERNAL DCE (DTE1) or DTE (DTE2). The clock modes are explained in Chapter 1 of the MEGAPLEX-2100 Installation and Operation manual. NOTE If the MEGAPLEX unit uses external timing, the HS-2 channel serving as the external clock source must use the DTE (DTE2) clock mode.

CTS

Specifies the state of the channel CTS line. Two selections are available: CTS constantly ON, or CTS line follows the local RTS line.

Table 2-2 Channel Parameters (Cont.)

FIFO Size Selects the size of the FIFO buffer used by the channel. In general, you should select AUTOMATIC, meaning automatic FIFO size selection. The automatically selected values are as follows: For T1 link: 6 bits for 64 kbps 30 bits for 128 and 192 kbps 52 bits for 256 through 512 kbps 72 bits for 576 through 1024 kbps 52 bits for 1088 through 1280 kbps 30 bits for 1344 and 1408 kbps 16 bits for 1472 and 1536 kbps. For E1 link: 16 bits for 64 kbps 30 bits for 128 and 192 kbps 52 bits for 256 through 448 kbps 72 bits for 512 through 1536 kbps 52 bits for 1600 through 1792 kbps 30 bits for 1856 and 1920 kbps 16 bits for 1984 kbps. For special applications that require longer buffers, you may want to select one of the supported FIFO sizes manually: 16 bits, 30 bits, 52 bits, or 72 bits TDM Link Selects the main link to which the module will be connected. The main link is specified by indicating the number of the I/O slot in which the desired main link module is installed. NOTE The selection made for any channel automatically changes the selections for both channels.

Time Slot Assignment After performing the configuration of the individual module channels, it is necessary to assign the required number of main link time slots to each connected channel. Perform time slot assignment in accordance with Chapter 3 of the MEGAPLEX-2100 Installation and Operation Manual.

Chapter 3 Alarms and Diagnostics

3.1 General
This chapter provides information on the alarms generated by the HS-2 modules, specifies their type (event or state), and explains the modulespecific diagnostic functions. The diagnostic information presented in this chapter supplements the general MEGAPLEX-2100 diagnostics operation instructions contained in Part I of the Installation and Operation manual.

3.2 Alarm Messages

Table 3-1 lists the specific alarm messages generated by the HS-2 modules, specifies their type, and explains their function. The module generates additional alarm messages, which are not specific to HS-2 or MTHS-2 modules. These messages are explained in Appendix B in Part I of the MEGAPLEX-2100 Installation and Operation manual. Table 3-1. Alarm Messages

Code 026 Message PROGRAMMED/INSTALL MODULE MISMATCH COMMUNICATION FAILURE (MP) FIFO OVERFLOW/UNDERFLOW Type State Explanation The module that has been read from the MEGAPLEX unit does not match the module programmed in the active data base. The CL module reported a temporary failure in the communication with the HS-2 module. The FIFO buffer of the specified channel overflowed/underflowed. If the event recurs, it is usually caused by incorrect selection of the timing mode on the module channels and/or user's equipment, or by technical problems (unstable clock) in the timing circuits of the user's equipment. The internal baud rate generator of the specified channel failed. The module must be repaired. The HS-2 module includes an old software version that differs from the version expected by the CL module.

3.3 Diagnostics
The HS-2 modules have a complete set of test loopbacks which includes local and remote loopbacks on each channel. Bit error rate test (BERT) can also be performed on each channel. When a test or loopback is activated, the user can also specify the time it remains active: the range is 1 through 30 minutes, in 1-minute steps. After the specified time, the test or loopback is automatically deactivated, thus reducing the management workload during system troubleshooting. The default selection is continuous connection, i.e., the test or loopback remain active until canceled by a user's command. The following sections describe the available diagnostic activities.

Local Loopback

The local loopback is performed at the channel input, by returning the transmit signal of the channel to the receive path. The transmit signal is still sent to the remote MEGAPLEX unit. A typical local loopback signal path for an MTHS-2 module is shown in figure 3-1.

Bit Error Rate Testing (BERT)

The BERT is used to check for proper data transmission through a selected channel, and obtain a qualitative evaluation of data transmission without using external test equipment. The bit error rate is measured by applying a 24-1 bit pseudo-random test sequence generated by an on-board generator to the input of the transmit path. The transmitted data is returned by means of a loopback somewhere along the data path (e.g., by connecting a local or remote main link loopback) to the receive path of the module, and routed to a test sequence evaluator. Instead of using a loopback, it is also possible to activate the BERT at both ends of the link, because the same data patterns are used at both ends. The evaluator compares the received data, bit by bit, to the original data and detects any difference (bit error). The output of the evaluator is sampled during module polling, to check whether errors were detected in the interval between consecutive pollings. The total number of intervals during which errors were detected are counted and can be displayed to the operator. During the BERT, the channel is disconnected from the user data equipment. At any given time, BER testing can be performed on only one channel of the HS-2 module.

Recommended Test Sequence

The loops available on the HS-2 or MTHS-2 modules provide a rapid and efficient way to identify the general location of a fault at either in the module, or in the external equipment or connections to channels.

Diagnostics

09/07/98 1:01 PM

HS-2 Installation & Operation Manual

Chapter 3 - Alarms and Diagnostics

If a complaint is received from one of the users connected to a HS-2 module, first activate the HS-2 local loopback at the side the complaint is received from. The local user must receive its own signal. If the signal is not received, the problem is at the local end:

Check the connections to the user equipment, or the user's equipment itself. Replace the cable. Replace the local HS-2 module.

If the local subscriber receives its own signal when the local loopback is connected, activate the remote loopback and repeat the check. You may also perform BER testing, to confirm the proper operation of the transmission path. If the remote loopback and BER test indicate the link operates normally, the problem is at the remote end. To check, repeat the procedure on the remote MEGAPLEX unit.
