EECE 112E POWER SYSTEM PROTECTION and SWITCHGEAR (3) EVERY SPRING TERM (ELECTIVE) Catalog Description: 3 credits.

Current and voltage transformers and protection. Relays. Circuits breakers and fuses. Data transmission. Project. Prerequisites: EECE 470 Electric Machinery Textbooks: 1) Power system relaying. Horowitz & Phadke. (2nd ed.) J. Wiley, 1995. 2) High Voltage Engineering and Testing. Ryan (2nd ed.) I.E.E. (UK) 2001. Course Objective: This course introduces the basic theory, construction, usage of current and voltage transformers, relays (electro-mechanical, solid state, numeric),and circuit breakers . This course introduces the protection systems used for electric machines, transformers, bus-bars, overhead and underground lines, and for over- voltages. Data transmission using power system or other communications systems. Objectives: To introduce students to power system protection and switchgear. To teach students theory and applications of the main components used in power system protection. To teach students the protection systems used for electric machines, transformers, bus bars, overhead and underground feeders. To teach students the theory, construction, and applications of main types circuit breakers. To develop in students an ability and skill to design the feasible protection systems needed for each main part of a power system. To enhance students knowledge of over- voltage protection and data transmission. To cultivate students spirit of teamwork, analysis of problems, and synthesis of optimal design for protection systems. (Students work in teams chosen by the instructor of the course to foster interaction skills and communication).

Topics covered: Current and voltage transformer theories, construction, and applications. Electro-mechanical relays: attracted armature, induction, thermal, permanent-magnet moving coil, theories, constructions, and applications. Solid state relays: timers, level detectors, amplitude and phase comparators theory and applications. Numeric relays: components, circuits, applications. Analogue to digital converter (ADC), digital to analogue converter (DAC), memories.

Protection systems for electric machines, transformers, bus bars, overhead and underground transmission lines. Over- voltage protection system. Data Transmission.
