International Organizations

1. IMF is International Monetary Fund.. which was born in Dec 1945 after rounds of discussions in July 1944. It' headquarter(HQ) is at Washington DC. It has 187 members and is headed by Christine Lagarde as Managing director..India's quota in IMF is 2.44% and is on 11th place. Due to India's association with it in Top 5 members for a long time India has a permanent place in exec board. 2. World Bank Group has two parts One is world bank which has two bodies 1. IBRD 2. IDA and Second part has IFC, MIGA, ICSID so World Bank Group has total 5 bodies. IBRD: International bank for reconstruction and development IDA:International development association IFC: International finance corporation MIGA:multilateral investmant guarantee agency ICSID: International centre for the settlement of investment disputes IBRD and IMF are also known as Bretton Wood Twins as they are the results of a common meeting.. Last member country of IBRD is Tuvalu (2010) Number of members IMF:187, IBRD: 186 World Bank Group: 1. IBRD 2. IDA 3. IFC, 4. MIGA, 5. ICSID, President: Robert B Zoellick IDA has 170 members Next is IFAD: international Fund for Agricultural Development, Estb: 1977, HQ: Rome, Members: 166, President: Kanaya F Nwanze and IFAD is a member of UNDP (Un's development Programme)

3. GATT: General Agreement on Tariffs and Trades, Started: Apr 1947 and dissolved on Dec 12, 1995. It was ended after famous Uruguay Round which ran for 87 months from (1986-90) this round extended the range for trade negotiations, leading to major reduction in tarriffs (about 40%). 123 countries participated in U-Round. <<very very imp for IIFT>> 4. The Common Wealth :It was originally known as The British Commonwealth of Nations. It is an association of sovereing and independent states which formally made up the British Empire. Members: 53 Headquarters: London The British Monarch (Queen Elizabeth II) is the symbolic head of the commonwealth. Commonwealth heads of government meet (CHOGM) is held in every 2 years.

Members: Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, (10 in number). Headquarters: Djakarta

International Olympic Committee (IOC): Established: June 23, 1894 Objective: To promote the Olympic ideals and administer Olympic games. Members: 205

15. International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO): Established: Feb, 1947 Objective: To promote the development of international standards. Members: 158 Headquarters: Switzerland

16. International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement: Established: 1928 Objective: To promote worldwide humanitarian aid. Headquarters: Geneva

17. Non-Aligned Movement (NAM): Established: Sept, 1961 Objective: Political co-operation and separate itself from both USA and USSR (in the cold war era). Members: 118 The credit of evolving the concept goes to Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The other contributors were Marshal Tito (President of Yugoslavia), Dr. Sukarno (President of Indonesia) and General Nasser (President of Egypt). Bandung conference in Indonesia became the forum for the birth of NAM. 18. European Union: Established: Apr 8, 1965. Effective on July 1, 1967. Objective: To create a united Europe in which member countries would have such strong economic and political bonds that war would cease to be a recurring fact. Members: 27 (The ten new countries which joined in 2004 are Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) (Romania and Bulgaria joined in 2007). Headquarters: Brussels (Belgium). The common European, currency, Euro, was launched on Jan. 1, 1999.

19. North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO): Established: April 4, 1949 Objective: Mutual defence and cooperation. Members: 26 + Russia Headquarters: Brussels

Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC): Established: Sept, 1959 Objective: Attempts to set world prices by controlling oil production and also persues member interest in trade and development. Members: 12 (Algeria, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, UAE, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Angola and Venezuela). Headquarters: Vienna (Austria)

21. South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC): Established: Dec 8, 1985 Objective: To promote economic, social and cultural cooperation. Members: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Afghanistan. Headquarters: Katmandu OPEC's President is Rostam Ghasemi, Sec Gen Abdallah -el-Badri

22. World Meteorological Organisation (WMO): Established: Oct 11, 1947, Effective from April 4, 1951. Objective: Specialized UN Agency concerned with meteorological cooperation. Members: 188 Headquarters: Geneva

24. Amnesty International (Al): Established: 1961 Objective: To keep a watch over human rights violation worldwide. Headquarters: London Got Nobel Prize in 1977 for Peace.

SAARC's Chairman is Mahindra Rajpaksa. He also serves Srilanka as a President.

International Fund for Agricultural Development (lFAD) : Established in Nov. 1977, it mobilizes resources for improved food production and better nutrition among the poor in developing countries, focusing on the needs of the poorest developing countries. This body has 163 member countries and the headquarters at Rome.

26. The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) : Established in 1946, it originally sent postwar relief to children. Now it works for the improvement of quality of life for children and mothers in developing countries. Its headquarters at New York. 27. World Health Organisation (WHO) : It came into existence in 7 April, 1948, possesses 192 members. Its headquarters at Geneva. Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC): Established: 1969 Objective: To promote Islamic solidarity among member states and to consolidate cooperation among members. Members: 57
