I. Course Description Intermediate French II is a course designed for grammar review and the improvement of oral communication. It is assumed that most of the material in the text (French for Oral and Written Review) is already familiar to the student. Our main objective is to review and reinforce the use of grammatical constructions and vocabulary so that students can express themselves in French with greater ease and scope. To that end, students will have frequent writing exercises and opportunities to speak in class. As for work in the grammar text, the date the chapter appears on the syllabus is the date by which students are to have reviewed the material and the chapter exercises. There will also be frequent quizzes in this course. The quiz grade will be based on the 20 best quizzes. There will be no make-ups for quizzes, analyses, or compositions all of which will be done in class. Students are expected to come to class prepared and to participate actively in class discussions. Participation is crucial in this class. A lack of participation will result in a low participation grade. Frequent absences will be costly on the final grade. As for the oral component of this class, students will have to make two presentations, and to prepare a short play (skit) at the end of the semester. The instructor will provide further directions about this project in class. Please, note that THERE WILL NOT BE ANY MAKE-UPS, unless the student has valid reasons to miss class and has notified the instructor within 24 hours of the assignment. If so, the student will have to give an official document to the instructor (i.e.: a doctors note). If you miss class, you should contact your study partner for an update. If you need help from your instructor, ask for an appointment or go to his/her office hours.

II. Course Materials 1. Carlut/Meiden French for Oral and Written Review 2. Zola Le Paradis des Chats et autres contes Ninon (the stories can be found online) 3. Various Online Resources concerning French culture (literature, music, film, history, current events, etc.). The Instructor will determine these sources and share them with the students. 4. (Pocket) French Dictionary (Recommended)

III. Grades Compositions/Analyses = 45 % Quizzes = 30 % Skit/ Oral Presentations = 15 % Class participation = 10 % Final Letter Grade: A=93-100; A-=90-92; B+=87-89%; B=83-86%; B-=80-82; C+=7779%; C=73-76%; C-=70-72; D+=67-69%; D=63-66%; D-=60-62; E=below 60%. S is equivalent to C or better. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences requires that students earn a final grade of C or better (or S) in FRE 1130 or 1180 in order to advance to the next course. Note that a C- does not satisfy this requirement; students must earn a C or better in the course in order to move on to the next course and satisfy general education requirements. According to university guidelines, letter grades will convert to GPA as follows: A = 4.0; A- = 3.67; B+ = 3.33; B= 3; B- = 2.67; C+ = 2.33; C = 2.0; C- = 1.67; D+ = 1.33; D = 1.0; D- = .67; E = 0; WF = 0; I = 0 NG = 0; S-U = 0
