Isang Diwa Community Forums and Meet and Greet Your Legislators
What to do?
Make sure your legislative representatives meet your FilAm political candidates.
Congressman Pete Stark with CA State Assembly candidate, Dr. Jennifer Ong
IDEA: A call to action just before October, Filipino American History Month Prepare a 2-minute prepared speech announcing the celebration of Filipino American History Month in the US.
Link the pride of heritage to FilAm Vote by stating the Census 2010 statistics that support your celebration. Example: Do you know that Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American population in California?
If there are Filipino Americans running for office or if there is someone who supports your Filipino communitys interests in your area, this is also a good time to announce this.
Your call to action at the end of the announcement is to ask the Filipinos and other ethnic communities to register to vote --- and to celebrate our Pride of Heritage and Pride of History in a meaningful way!
Celebrating Philippine Independence Day in the United States has a different perspective for me. We celebrate "Pride of Place" and "Pride of Community" as well as "One Community." That was my message during the Public Communications section of the Hercules City Council meeting on June 12, 2012. I talked about the power of the ethnic vote and announced what an opportunity we have to support our three Filipino American candidates for the CA State Assembly in the November elections: Rob Bonta, Jennifer Ong, and Christopher Mateo.
You can watch the segment from the Hercules's city website.
