Dublin Core Records Kellie Meehlhause LI 862 Melissa Messina September 16, 2012 Introduction The purpose of this

document is to demonstrate my understanding of descriptive metadata record creation through the use of the Dublin Core metadata scheme and recommended encoding schemes for Dublin Core. I will first describe my process for completing the assignment, identifying issues I faced in creating each record and my methods for fixing them. I will then discuss what lessons I learned as well as any additional questions or concerns I still have. The document also contains all five completed records, which employ the following digital resource types: journal article, online tutorial, online magazine, dynamic content website, and web page with multiple contributors. Discussion My process for completing this project could best be described as a slow burn, meaning that it took me a long time to get started, but once I did, the records came together fairly quickly. Part of this slow start could be attributed to my own perfectionism; I wanted to make sure that I had the right digital resource types selected and Ive never been able to just pick one. Sometimes I would select an item and then discover that it didnt list all of the information I needed to create the information record, causing me to have to start over again. Even though all of my resources could be found on the Internet, the layout of each item on its respective page was different, leading to a scavenger hunt of sort just to find, say, the date issued or keywords

(which informed my subject entries). One technique that helped, however, was my understanding of HTML. I soon realized that if you right click on a page and select View source, the HTML code that pops up often includes metadata information under the tag <meta>. This approach was especially helpful when it came to the Webpage with multiple contributors record because the code included not only a description for the page but also the creator and an alternative title. Once I got over my perfectionism and was able to decide what specific items I wanted to use for my records, the process went much faster, albeit with a few bumps along the way. One of the most difficult steps for me was assigning a correct value to the Type and Format properties. Though a journal article can obviously be classified as text, Youtube videos and dynamic content websites are more difficult because the appropriate data wasnt listed always visible, even when I pulled up the HTML code. Thus, it was necessary to browse the DCMIType and IMT encoding schemes for definitions of the different types and formats. This took a lot of time and confusion because, for instance, InteractiveResource and MovingImage are not words I would typically use to describe dynamic content websites and online videos, respectively, but they are part of the encoding schemes controlled vocabulary. My difficulties here emphasize that metadata record creation is a lot like playing basketball, meaning that you need to continually practice and reassess your abilities before you can call yourself an expert. Nevertheless, I dont think I would have been able to overcome these technical difficulties were it not for Dublin Cores formulaic nature. While the values and refinements may be different, the 15 primary properties are broad and general enough for a wide range of resource types. Whether creating a record for an image, journal article, or website, you can

safely assume that the title, creator, subject, and type properties will more than likely be implemented. This standards helps to establish a sound foundation for all information records, and its no wonder that Dublin Core has been such a primary metadata standard for libraries. Summary and Conclusion After completing this assignment, I find that I have a newfound respect for metadata specialists and cataloguers in general. Creating different information records using Dublin Core takes a lot of patience and attention to detail. That being said, Im still curious about two things: (1) how, or if, Dublin Cores 15 properties will change in an age of born-digital items, and (2) how Dublin Core elements can be successfully combine with other metadata standards.
