Q: Why did you decide to count the steps for Chai Lifelines Walkathon? A: I am fortunate enough to have the chance to help people in need, and I wanted to raise money for charity. It is a good thing to do, and I want to give back in every way I can. Q: How are you able to count steps for a walkathon? How is it possible? A: Everyone gets a pedometer and it tracks how many steps are taken. The goal is to take three million steps in total, which is the total amount of steps it takes to get from New York to Florida. Q: Who is benefitting from this walkathon? A: The sick children of Chai Lifeline are benefitting from this walkathon. Their organization will receive all of the proceeds so that they can use the money for their charity.
with the Yachad members, and formed bonds of friendship. I specifically made sure all of the volunteers were interacting with the Yachad members and that all of the Yachad members were interacting with us as well. I also ensured that no one felt left out and I tried to make everyone feel as comfortable as possible. Q: Describe your experiences engaging with the Yachad group. A: I really love interacting with them. They have a few difficulties but once you get to know them, you realize that they are really just like us. Its great to see the smiles on their faces and to know that you are the reason why they are smiling. Engaging with the Yachad group taught me how to relate to all kinds of people. It helped me realize how fortunate I am for my family, friends, health, and life. I also gained new friendships and I made long-lasting memories.
It is different from just raising money with your friends as a group; its a lot of hard work. But, the reward is much more satisfying because you get to see their happiness firsthand. Q: Are there any other Hesed opportunities that you hope to be a part of? A: I would like to run the Disney half marathon one day. The money goes to SBH, which is a great cause. There is always room for more Hesed. When you have the chance to give, you should. Q. How does it feel to do Hesed and help others? A: It feels good to know that you are helping others and not expecting anything else in return. You are doing something because you want to.
Q: What is one piece of advice you have for someone who would want to get involved? A: You have to want it. You cant be forced to do it or you wont like Q: Is working with Yachad differ- it. Just realize that the whole point Q: You were also very involved in ent than other types of Hesed? is to thank G-d for what you have the Yachad Shabbaton. What did A: Yes. Working with Yachad and give back to those who are you do there? members requires more patience. less fortunate. A: We played games, ate, spoke

The foundation of America is based on immigrants, settlers coming into this country, looking for new opportunities. Immigrants from all over the world have added a wealth of talent to our country both economically and culturally. Diversity is the key to our countrys success. As examples, Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple, Sergy Brin, one of the founders of Google, and countless others have enriched our country. I believe that we need to legislate policy that can enable many more immigrants to come to the U.S. Illegal immigration has attracted criticism in the United States. Many believe that illegal aliens receive undeserved federal aid, such as welfare, Medicare, Medicaid, educational grants, and preferred tuition rates, without paying taxes. This belief makes many Americans oppose more liberal policies. In contrast to this view, the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan educational institute, reports the following: With a comprehensive immigration reform plan that includes legalization for all undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States, $1.5 trillion would be added to the U.S. governments domestic product over 10 years. While many have complained that illegal immigrants dont pay taxes, that is untrue. In fact, households headed by unauthorized immigrants paid $11.5 billion in state and local taxes in 2010. Approximately 5 billion of additional net tax revenue would accrue to the federal government over three years if all undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States were legalized. In contrast, $2.6 trillion is the amount of money that would evaporate from the U.S. cumulative GDP over 10 years if all undocumented immigrants in the country were deported or self deported. Just the cost of removing the entire undocumented population from the United States over a five-year period would be $285 billion. These statistics illustrate that we benefit from immigration and shows that immigration is a net asset to our country. Due to controversy in politics, there is now no real viable method for illegal aliens to obtain citizenship. This obstacle to citizenship creates a situation where they cannot contribute fully to our society. Many cannot go home either for lack of opportunity or being brought here when they were very young and therefore do not have cultural ties to their former countries. We need a process that is fair and reasonable, leading to legal immigration. This topic should be very dear to us all. America is a haven, which has opened doors for most of us here at MDY. Our parents, grandparents, or great grandparents have immigrated to America to open doors for future generations, to open doors for us. So why not let others do the same for their families? -Abraham Tobias

No midterms next year! Well, rumor has it that the MDY administration has come up with a new plan for next year known as The Trimester. As editor-in-chief, I had the chance to confirm this rumor as true! I have the inside scoop on whats really going on this upcoming Fall 2013. Mrs. Tokayer, Rabbi Lebowitz, and I discussed the concept of the trimester system, and I personally find it beneficial to the upcoming freshmen class, as well as the rest of the MDY student body. Instead of having two semesters, we will now have three; hence, the trimester. There wont be any January midterms which will, in turn, leave us more class time. The freshmen class will have a wide range of electives to choose from. Each semester they will be able to take a class which will focus on their major choice. This will help the students become more open-minded, in addition to develop an attractive resume starting from the 9th grade! The sophomores will be able to choose a 2nd level course focusing on their majors as well. You are probably wondering how this will affect the juniors and seniors, right? Well, this has a major impact college-wise, on both juniors and seniors. Instead of a transcript which contains two final averages, students will have a chance to increase their GPA with three final grades. As always, the seniors will still have the internship program as a way to introduce them to their career field of choice. The idea is still developing, and it is so exciting to know how everyone will soon enjoy all that MDY has to come! -Paulette Gindi
Dvar Torah
By Hannah Cohen When you see the donkey of someone you hate lying under its burden, you must make every effort to help him. In this weeks Parasha, the Torah encourages us to help others, including our enemies. The Chofetz Chaim tells us that even though the owner of the donkey is evil and gives us reason to hate him, we must still be kind to him and help him. What if the donkey was carrying life-saving medicines? The obligation to help would be even greater. Certainly we would help in every possible way. The Chofetz Chaim concludes that we must try to help the person who is trying to provide for the people who learn Torah. The Torah tells us because [the Torah] is your life. The Torah is spiritual strength for your soul. Without it we cannot possible live or exist. The ones who learn it are compared to those that bring life to the world. We can learn two valuable lessons from this Pasuk. Just because you hate someone, doesnt mean you shouldnt help him when he is in trouble. Secondly, do not look down upon people who study Torah all day and are supported by their parents. We have an obligation to help those who are constantly learning Torah, because those who study Torah are bringing life to the world.

In English. Or, like this: Ma, You know that impossible test that I had the other day? Mom: Yea Its not my fault! Everyone failed! Its the teacher! Best regards, Dennis Dweck
Dear Credit Recovery Victim, Put the final on their bed with flowers and chocolates and say that you love them so much, you tried your best, and you are ready to move in with your friend after they see it. Butchie Betesh actually did this! Or, I suggest you promise them that you will do better next semester, and show them a detailed plan on how you are planning on doing that. -Flo
The teachers took the twelve worst offences of mistakes students have been making on their paper, and instituted a rule that if a student makes three or more of these mistakes on any paper in any subject, he/ she receives a stamp on the assignment and is required to rewrite it. The assignment is then marked late. There has been a lot of buzz about the Dirty Dozen, and it seems as though it is all anyone is talking about! I interviewed various students and teachers about their reactions to this new initiative, and we had a wide range of responses! The Good: Chaim Salameh: I learned this in elementary school! It is ridiculous if someone is still making these mistakes in high school! Nissim Hazkour: I study for the SAT grammar section anyway, so I know Im not getting Dirty Dozened. I dont think its a big deal.
Adele Sutton: I think its great. Some people speak with grammar that is really pathetic. Joyce Sitt: Its honestly very good. Everyone needs to speak correctly and I hate listening to how some people speak!
Dear Dennis and Flo, I came back from vacation and my face looks like a tomato. What should I do? -Anyone Have Aloe?
The Bad: Marilyn Terzi: Hassle city! Rebecca Mizrahi: I dont want to have to think about grammar while I write! I just want to write what I am thinking about and worrying about grammar makes it so much harder to focus. Esti Hazkour: I really dont like how it applies to Judaic studies also.
Dear Anyone Have Aloe, Buy some aloe. If thats not working then wait until it goes away. But look at the bright side if you do something stupid and you get embarrassed no one can tell because your face is already red! Ya boy D-Eazy!
Dear Anyone Have Aloe, Dont worry. If you put on bronzer you will be fine, and youll blend in nicely.
The Ugly:
Charles Dana and Irving Kassin: We would rather die than be Dirty Dozened!
-Flo
Danielle Chera: I have no clue what youre talking about. What is the Dirty Dozen??
Russos Philosophy
Teacher Reactions:
Rabbi Sirote: Its great. Its an easily uniformed program that is really getting all of the students the skills they need, and quickly! Rabbi Lebowitz Theyre dirty, and I have trouble counting passed eleven.
Be happy in the moment thats enough. Each moment is all we need, not more. -Anonymous This quote means that we should be happy right now and in the moment that we are living in. That is the key to being happy. Happiness is the key to life, and the key to living. Instead of thinking about what is to come, or counting down towards something, take a minute and just appreciate what you have right now and what is around you.
Mrs. Cymet: Unfortunately these students are writing incorrectly and hopefully this will help them be more aware. I hope they start something like this in elementary school!
Mrs. Levy: Its a very good idea, even though it is a little annoying for teachers to have to grade everything twice! It challenges the students to correct mistakes.

Leandra Medine is the author of the Man Repeller Blog. Her blog is based on the concept that many times, women dress in fashions meant to impress other women, and as a result the high-fashion items often repel men. Leandras goal is to inspire women to dress for themselves, and to wear what they like. While she began her blog in 2010 as a hobby, she quickly gained popularity and has been featured everywhere from Vogue and Glamour to CNN, Forbes, and The New York Times.

JH: Writing a blog started out as a hobby for you. How did it become a career? LM: I was kind of strategic about partnerships I would forge and where they would take me. JH: When did you realize you wanted to be in fashion? LM: When the Paris Review asked Ernest Hemingway when he knew he wanted to be a writer, he said he always knew. I think my experience with fashion is similar. JH: You were recently voted into Vogues Best of 2012 and Forbes 30 Under 30. You have 240,000 followers on Instagram, 117,000 followers on Twitter, and your webpage as 2 million views a month. Whats next? LM: I HAVE NO IDEA! Im just like, Thank you, Hashem. This has been really nice. JH: In your career, you receive many gifts from various designers from the world renowned and those just starting out. What was the first gift you received, and what was your favorite? LM: I try not to accept that many gifts, actually, because it impedes on the journalistic integrity of a writer. But, my favorite gift has certainly got to have been a pair of pink triple stack suede fringed Christian Louboutin heels. JH: I am sure you bump into a lot of celebrities. Have any left you feeling completely star-struck? LM: Lena Dunham every time. JH: You went to Ramaz High School, where they implemented a strict dress code much like ours. How did you fit your unique sense of style within the limits of the school dress code? LM: I actually didnt really. It was an interesting exploration in style simply in that I had to rely on other things to convey the same point of view that fashion often implies. JH: Do you have any advice for all of us Man-Repellers? LM: IT IS OKAY TO GET MARRIED LATER. JH: What is something you love about being a part of the Syrian-Jewish community? LM: It is a perpetual comfort zone. JH: Who is your inspiration? LM: You. JH: We are all wearing trends that you picked out (Supergas, sneaker wedges, etc.). What do you think will be next? Pink flamingos and googly eyes? LM: Lets hope roller-skates. That could be fun.
School Event Zoom-In: Chinese Students Visit Magen David Yeshivah HS!
By: Leon Betesh This week, MDYHS hosted 40 Chinese students from China. We all congregated in the Midrash, and every Magen David student involved in the program was grouped with two Chinese students. First we asked them questions about their daily lives in China, and how their school is different than ours. We learned that they have 3000 students in their school, with 80 students in each class!! We also asked them about their personal lives, such as what their hobbies and favorite foods or types of music were. The two boys who I was paired with were Tao Ran and Zhu Xi. They were both 15 years old and they shared the same hobbies as I do such as playing basketball or going on the computer. Since I am currently taking Mandarin Chinese in school, I had an edge on everybody else there. Sure, I wasnt speaking fluent Chinese, but I was able to pick up on some words that they were saying. Next the Chinese students gave us all gifts. I received Chinese fans, postcards, and floose (dont worry it only equaled $1.60). After talking for some time we were asked to come up with a formula of success. We came up with a long list constituting of things such as handwork, taking risks, setting goals, teamwork, etc. It was fascinating working together with other students from a different country. I really found this helpful because I hope to eventually visit China some time in the future, and this was a great source of networking. We exchanged e-mails and even took a picture together.

The day started off as any. I woke up to the loud sound of my mother screaming in agony. That man means nothing to me! I heard my mother yell as my father hit her over and over again. But this was nothing new to me. This happened occasionally, and there as nothing I could do about it. I held my pale hands to my ears until the screaming stopped, then sat up in my bed to discover another leak coming from the rusty ceiling of my small bedroom. I wasnt surprised, though. My house was falling apart, and my parents and I knew it. But I also knew there was no way we could afford any repairs. As I got out of bed to look for a bucket for the leak, my father barged angrily into my bedroom. Jason! Didnt I tell you to take out the garbage last night?! He yelled at me. And then he started to hit me. Eddie! Eddie, wake up! Youre kicking and screaming in your sleep! A familiar voice said to me while tugging on my arm. I opened my eyes to find my beautiful wife, Victoria, sitting up in our king sized bed. She looked at me curiously. I noticed that half of our gold, silk blanket was sprawled out on the wine-colored carpet. Victoria, I am so sorry I woke you! Did I wake the kids? I said, as I glanced at the gold clock on my brown mahogany night table. It was 6 a.m. No, theyre still sleeping. Are you okay? She asked me. Yes, Im fine. I was just having a nightmare. I assured her. Go back to sleep, honey. Im going to get ready for work. After I showered, dressed myself in one of my best suits, and made sure I had my iPhone 5 that I didnt go anywhere without, I walked down the marble staircase of my four-story mansion to find my chauffeur waiting for me by the front door. Good morning, Chris. Please take me to AndersonCorp. I have a big presentation to work on. Of course, Mr. Anderson, Chris said to me as he opened the front door for me and walked with me down the endless driveway to my long, black, stretch limousine. I took out the garbage while I iced my left cheekbone. My mother was sitting at the kitchen table, watching me, and I couldnt help but get angry with her. Why do you let him treat us this way? Stand up for us! Youre not a fifteen-year-old boy like me. You shouldnt let that man abuse us! I said furiously to her. Jason! Dont talk about him that way. No matter what he does, he is still your father and he can do whatever pleases him, she said to me coldly. I knew she was scared of him, and thats why she never stood up for us. I was not going to live my years being abused by my father for the rest of my life. As I entered my large office that said Edward Anderson, CEO of AndersonCorp on the door. Sarah, my secretary, greeted me. Good morning, Mr. Anderson. I have an envelope for you that somebody left here for you this morning. They said it should go directly to you, and nobody else. I left it on your desk. Thank you, Sarah. I can always count on you for anything, I said to her as I sat down by my glass desk. I spotted the envelope in the center of my desk and picked it up. It was a plain, white envelope that said Jason. I began to panic. Why did the envelope say my real name? Nobody was supposed to know that about my past. Who sent the envelope? I nervously ripped the envelope to find a small, simple, white paper. The paper read, I know your secret.

Jeffrey Grazi asked our teachers for their favorite jokes this week Mrs. R. Maleh: Two elephants are in a bathtub. First one says, Pass the soap. The second one says, No soap, radio! Mrs. Cymet: Why did the elephant fail the test if the question was so easy? Because the answers were so hard! Mrs. Harari: Why didnt the sun go to college? Because it already had a million degrees! Rabbi Scheinfeld: A lady has to get to her doctor appointment at 2:00 in the city. Its impossible to reschedule. She got stuck in the tunnel, and finally at 1:45 she gets out and speeds to the doctors office. Its 2:00, and now she needs to find parking. She pulls out a Tehillim book and begins praying, Please, Hashem! Find me a spot and I will never say lashon hara! Two seconds later, a spot opens up in front of her and she pulls in. Sorry Hashem, she says, Thanks anyway. I found one myself! Riddle: I know a word of letters three. Add two, and fewer there will be.

1. Bake the brownies according to package instructions for cake-like brownies. 2. About 5 minutes before the brownies are done, remove them from the oven and cover with mini marshmallows. Put the brownies back in the oven for approximately 5 minutes more, just until the marshmallows are melted. Remove from the oven and let cool. 3. In a small pot over low heat, mix the peanut butter and chocolate chips until creamy. Remove from the heat and add the Rice Krispies. 4. When the brownies are cooled, spread the peanut-butter mixture evenly over the top. 5. When the topping hardens, cut the brownies into cubes and place a mini marshmallow on top of each one. Enjoy!
Varsity Hockey
By Gina Malach So, we are on our way back from our second game this week. We had a tight schedule thanks to Sandy, and all of our games were pushed up and squeezed back to back. But, thats no excuse to play any less than 110%. When we play our hardest we come out on top. We made it to the playoffs this year, and we plan to go far. We dont just play hockey. The whole night is an adventure, from the minute we meet up in the center to the post game bus hangouts. No matter who we play, when we play, or how we play, we will always play like a team; we will always play like Warriors!
Signing Day
By: Albert Zalta Wednesday marked one of the most anticipated days in college football. It was national signing day. So who was the winner of this years recruiting title? According to national rankings, the Alabama Crimson Tide have achieved this title for the fifth time in the past six years, a recognizable accomplishment. This years feat was led by defensive end Jonathan Allen, linebacker Reuben Foster, and tight end O.J. Howard, three five-star prospects followed by many others. Although Alabama won in rankings, Robert Nkemdiche, number one overall prospect committed himself to the Ole Miss Rebels. With his tremendous speed and size, defensive end Nkemdiche has the potential to change the Rebels defense from the moment he step on the field. Ole Miss also gained top-ranked offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to make a run for the title. Florida, Ohio State, and Notre Dame also came up big with rankings in the top five, each addressing their teams specific needs for a run at the title. The only thing to do now is wait and see who will rise and who will fall under pressure.

Mr. Alan Arbesfeld
Mr. Arbesfeld, Crossword Creator!
By Abraham Tobias
AT: Is it true you create crossword puzzles for The New York Times? Tell us a little about that. AA: Yes, creating crossword puzzles has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. Hundreds of people, including myself, create puzzles and submit them, and the editor decides which to publish. I have had around 100 of them published (and even more denied)! AT: What first intrigued you to create one? AA: I have always been fascinated by crossword puzzles, dating back to a project I did in elementary school. I began solving them and that eventually led to me making my own. My parents were also always working on them, so I was always around it. AT: What originally gave you the idea to submit one to the NYT? AA: The NYT is the most prestigious place a person can get his/her crossword published, and is really the ultimate goal for anyone making them. AT: What is your favorite thing about crosswords? AA: The challenge of it. Its like solving a math problem. AT: When was the last crossword of yours published? AA: Around October, November.
AT: Can we expect to see one soon? I know well be looking! AA: One should be coming really soon! In fact the publisher recently accepted a few submissions of mine, although they dont always inform us when ours will come out.
