The Four Positions of Raising the Hands in the Salah

Author: Shaikh Saalih Al Fouzaan (hafithahullah) Source: http://www.alfawzan.ws/node/12117

Q: What is the ruling on that which some of the Ma'moomeen

do and that is when he is in the first tahshahhud (i.e. which is the second rak'ah) and he intends to stand up for the third, he makes the takbeer and raises his hands while sitting. Is this (action) correct? And what are the positions where the hands are raised in the prayer?

A: Na'am, the positions where the hands are to be raised with the takbeer in the
salah are; 1-the opening takbeer of the prayer, 2-the takbeer for rukoo' (i.e. bowing), and 3-rising from the rukoo' when he says, "Sami' Allahu liman hamidahu" he raises his hands, these three places. The fourth position is when he stands up from the first tashahhud as there has come a proof for this and some of the scholars practice it. However he should not raise his hands while sitting, rather he raises them when he is standing along with the takbeer. He raises his hands with the takbeer whilst standing. Na'am. ___________________ Faaidah: The proofs for the first three positions that the Shaikh (hafithahullah), mentioned are as follows: On the authority of Ibn 'Umar (radi Allahu anhuma),

Ma'moom: One who is being led by the Imaam in the salah.

The Prophet (sallahu 'alayhi wasallam) used to raise his hands to the level of his shoulders when he would open the prayer (i.e. the opening takbeer), when he would make the takbeer for rukoo' and when he would raise his head up from the rukoo'. [Bukhaari: 735 and Muslim: 390] And the proof for the last position that the Shaikh (hafithahullah) mentioned is as follows: On the authority of Ibn 'Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) who said: The Messenger of Allah (sallahu 'alayhi wasallam) would raise his hands up to the level of his shoulders when he would stand up from two rak'ah(s) (i.e. after the first tashahhud) just as he would do at the opening of the prayer. [Bukhaari: 736]
