General Objectives of the module: This module will introduce students to the concept of Control System Engineering and develop basic analytical understanding of Modern Control theory and its applications in the field of Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this module, students are expected to be able to: 1. Analyze the effect of feedback on a system 2. Compute transfer function and implement Block diagram reduction of control systems with and without signal flow graphs 3. Compute impulse response of the system and defined transfer function 4. Simplify transfer functions using Masons gain formula 5. Implement time domain analysis of the control system and analyze the stability using Routh Hurwitz Criterion and Root Locus analysis. 6. Implement frequency domain analysis of the control system and analyze the stability using Nyquist stability Criterion and computes phase margin and gain margin. 7. Draws Bode plots and understand its applications Learning and Teaching Approach used : Lecture : Tutorial : Laboratory Practical : Self study : 3 hours per week 1 hour per week 2 hours per week 6 hours per week

Assessment Theory 75 marks Continuous Assessment - 25 marks 1. Assignments: 5 Marks 2. Midterm test: 5 Marks 3. Quiz / Surprise test: 5 Marks 4. Case study: 10 Marks Semester End Examination 50 marks 1. Closed Book , 3 hours duration 50 marks Practical Continuous Assessment - 25 Marks 1. Regular laboratory assessment - 15 marks as shown in annexure - I 2. Viva/test 10 marks Students must obtain 40% each in the Continuous assessment of theory, practical and the semester end examination. The overall pass mark for the module is 50%.

Subject Matter : 1. Basic components, open & closed loop, effect of feedback; mathematical models, differential equations, state equations, state diagram, linear, non-linear, time invariant & time-varying systems; impulse response, transfer functions of linear systems, signal flow graph, Masons Gain formula, state space representation , stability analysis, state transmission matrix, eigen value. 2. Modeling of Electrical & Mechanical systems, DC motor, error Detector, tachometer. Characteristics of control systems; first & second order systems, transient response, steady-state error, stability of linear system; Routh-Hurwitz criterion; Root-locus method, principle & properties; frequency response plot: Bode Plot, Nyquist criterion, Grain & Phase margin, transient & error function analysis, type of a system & its effect on error function. 3. Design of Control Systems, lead-lag compensation , proportional, proportional-integral (PI), PID controller. 4. Digital Control Systems, effect of Sampling rate on stability, transient response & steady state error. List of experiments 1. Familiarization with MATLAB Control System tool Box, MATLABSIMULINK tool box & PSPICE. 2. Determination of step response for 1st order & 2nd order system with amity feedback on CRO & calculation of control system specifications for variations of system design. 3. Simulation of step response & impulse response for Type-II, Type-I & Type-2 system with unity feedback using MATLAB & PSPICE. 4. Determination of root locus, Bode-plot, Nyquist Plot, using MATLAB control system toolbox for a given 2nd order transfer function & determination of different control system specifications. 5. Determination of PI, PD, PID controller action on 1st order simulated process. 6. Determination of approximate transfer function experimentally using Bode Plot. Reading List 1.
