Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

Newsletter No. 17 January 2013

Hi Jazz Guitar Fans, A Happy New Year to you all. By the time you read this newsletter the New Year festivities and Christmas mayhem should be a distinct memory and we look forwards to another great year for HJGS. Thank you all for your efforts and co-operation in making the first annual club performers concert such a successful night. The occasion went so well that several members, and a few casual curious listeners, have suggested that we also hold a similar event in the summer! Your feedback please!!! There are too many people individually, but a special thank you should go to Ian Wroe for much of the organisation, provision of amps and general donkey work as well as to Pete Wraith for hosting and Martin Chung and Enzo Luckow for providing the professional lighting. The latter looked fantastic, from the audiences standpoint, but it was amusing to see players bumping into each other, and trying to decipher which amp they had plugged into, in the blinding on-stage dazzle! Tom Prior must have had prior (no pun intended) warning as he was the only musician to turn up in shades!! Mention must also be made of our local music shop GTRs generous donation of raffle prizes, all seasonally wrapped. Please support them when you require any musical bits and bobs, if they havent got it theyll try to get it for you. Local music shops are disappearing at a rate of knots. Dan Johnson of Foulds Music in Derby has also contributed some great raffle prizes which will be available at upcoming club nights. Dan is a keen guitarist and supporter of jazz guitar and the shop always carries a great selection of jazz boxes. Thank you Maureen (GTR and Dan (Foulds). Remember too that we have negotiated discounts with both of these stores on production of a current membership card. On to the evening itself; it started with two tunes from the Jazz Dawgs with Phil Kampen on double bass. The vocal; Pennies from Heaven, was followed by the up tempo, and tricky, Slipped Disc by Benny Goodman. Nice solos all round and superb accompaniment by Phil Kampen, who is relatively new to the Dawgs. It has to be said that Phil did a superb job throughout the evening, playing with virtually everyone!

Next up was Robin Thomas, again with Phil, who played Kesselish versions of Moonglow, Satin Doll and The Nearness of You.

Committee member Darren Dutson-Bromley then presented a varied set, ranging from duets with Phil; Dont Get Around Much Anymore and On a Clear Day, to a flute duet - Watch What Happens, with John Lagrand (flute) and was then joined by Brian, Colin and Richard (from the Idle Guits) in a commendable reading of St Louis Blues.

Jack Gillen and Jamie Holroyd (without bass) gave us Wave, Alone Together and Body and Soul during which they were joined by Adrian for a lyrical reading of this famous ballad.

Following a short interval, during which the afore mentioned raffle was conducted (and at every available opportunity during the rest of the evening), the Jazz Dawgs took the stage again with Man of Mystery, the old Shadows favourite, which has become a staple of the Dawgs repertoire, followed by a period representation of Les Pauls rendition of Lover, a tough call for bassist Phil (who managed brilliantly) with its numerous tempo changes. Dave Vangelderen and Chris Brown followed with four tunes presented in their own meticulous, and carefully rehearsed, manner. My Funny Valentine and Have You Met Miss Jones stood out and it was good to hear Joy Spring again.

Phil returned to the stage after this short, but Im sure welcome, break to accompany Chris Flaherty and Darren with Chris choice of My Favourite Things, Pure Imagination and Nature Boy, all of which were sensitively played with great respect for melody and harmonic structure. Last but not least were Tom Prior (well prepared for the lights!), Martin Chung and Phil who gave a spirited performance of Cherokee, before being joined by Koo Kanani for three Django tunes, the spirit of which was beautifully captured by Koo in his virtuoso gypsy jazz outbursts. What a great ending to a great night!

Dont forget the next meeting is January 15th

Remember the HJGS exists for the benefit(s) of its members, so we need to hear from YOU: good, bad, indifferent, news, views, gossip, ideas, viewpoints, gigs, sales wants, swaps etc, etc! Please keep us informed of any jazz guitar related gigs, events, sales or other item of interest, so that we can pass information on to other members. HJGS needs to develop its wider network as an important forum for jazz guitar related information and information exchange, so that we may all benefit from the collective wisdom and uncoordinated information that undoubtedly exists amongst fans and connoisseurs.

Swap an Idea The swap an idea section of the newsletter suggested last month by Adrian, appears to proving popular. In this newsletter we have ideas forwarded from Jamie and Darren. Obviously, if you wish this to continue, we need your input, so contributions please to huddjazzguitsoc@gmail.com. Tritone Triplet Lick by Jamie Holroyd

The lick uses two triads A and Eb that are a b5 or tritone apart. A7 is the chord in content and Eb is the b5 of A. Each triad fingering starts on the root so its not too tricky to visualize across the fretboard and in different keys. The triplets give the lick a nice bouncy feel, but make it technically tougher to play at faster tunes. Just remember that you might have to change the rhythmic values when you are using it at different tempos. Hope you enjoy it!

And from Darren Dutson-Bromley

This is an example of how it is possible to play a chord melody run over a G7 chord by using a mixture of Dm7 and G7 chords. It is possible to move quite freely between the two chords to create really interesting results.

Trefor Owen has generously supplied a pdf file of his seminar on accompaniment. It should be included as an attachment to this distribution email. Thanks Trefor.
