First full-length Italian feature film, an adaptation of Dante. Influenced by the verisimo movement in Italian opera, which itself has roots in Wagner. Also influenced by the poetic realism of 1930s French directors such as Renoir and Carn. Visconti and Rossellini(?) worked for Renoir early in their careers. The Italian neo-realist movement ends with the fulfilment of its goals in de Sicas Umberto D. Rossellini had already begun, at this time, to examine the limits of representation. A move to pink neorealism which reflected recent economic progress of the Italian economy. The pink refers to the fact that increasing the reality being depicted could accommodate the beauty of a Sophie Loren! Followed in turn by commedia allItaliana which though comedic in tone addressed serious social issues. Neo-realism would also lead to the spaghetti Western. 3 Visconti produces perhaps the first neo-realist film, but largely goes beyond neo-realism in his own style. Note that, unusually for a foreign director, Visconti gets consistently high marks on IMDb for all of his films. 4 First neo-realist film. A version of the The Postman Always Rings Twice. 5 Completes so-called neorealist trilogy. 6 First of two transitional films exploring the capacity of film to depict reality. 7 Mixture of neo-realism and fantasy anticipates Fellinis characteristic style. 8 Considered the last neo-realist film, followed successively by pink neorealism and commedia allItaliana

Interestingly, Donald Sutherland plays title role. See Alex in Wonderland. A brave new direction, reminiscent of the subjectivity of 8 but more extreme! 11 A kind of picaresque second neorealism. 12 Also Godard.

Similar theme to A Fistful of Dollars, but even more influential at least in Europe.
