Why Do Bad Things Happen?

A few years ago I participated in a lively discussion with a group of friends. We would regularly meet together. We eat together, worship a bit and spend a good part of the night discussing various topics. One night I threw out the following question: Why do bad things happen? Now all those assembled have been around church circles most of our lives. Through the years wed all been exposed to various theologies and philosophies attempting to explain this age old question. Here are a few of the answers we came up with: We are reaping what weve sown. Were out of Gods will. Theres a lesson we need to learn. Its warfare, a spiritual attack. Its the consequences of our sin. Its the effect of someone elses sin. Its demonic payback or backlash for our good deeds. The injustice experienced creates an opportunity for future Divine justice. Various combinations of the above explanations. My guess is that you could add a few items to this list. So, heres my point, when bad things happen - do we really know why? Do we know with a definitive certainty why it happened? I think not. If were uncertain why bad things happen to us, then were even less certain why they happen to others. That uncertainty alone is a very good reason for extending grace. Grace toward others and grace toward ourselves. Not only grace but dramatically less judgment as well. Bad things happen and we dont always know why. When bad things do happen may our default position be one of love and grace. What say you? Live Loved, Tom

Luke 15: 20-24 (NLT) So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. But his father said to the servants, Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found. So the party began. Rembrandts painting The Return of the Prodigal Son.
