GRADE 11 PHYSICS COURSE OUTLINE

Welcome to Grade 11 Physics with Mr. Shipman. Below is an introduction to the course including topics and expectations.
Grade 11 Physics is an optional course which students may opt to take upon completion of their Grade 10 Science. The course consists of five distinct clusters (Introduction to Physics 11, Waves, The Nature of Light, Mechanics, and Fields). The concepts that are introduced in Physics 11 are further developed in Grade 12 Physics. The following is a brief list of the topics covered in each of the units. UNIT 0 INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS SKILLS (THIS UNIT WILL BE BREIF AS IT IS REVIEW) *Scientific Notation the Accuracy of Measured Quantities *Significant Digits *How do we find values for measured physical values? *What method is used to determine sides in triangles? *When we measure physical data what units should we use? *How do we determine the relationships between physical data? UNIT 1 WAVES *Waves in One Dimension *Waves in Two Dimensions *Sound UNIT 2 THE NATURE OF LIGHT *The Nature of Light and Newton's Corpuscular Theory *Determining the Speed of Light *The Wave Theory of Light *Young's Experiment *The Photoelectric Effect and the Wave-Particle Duality UNIT 3 MECHANICS *Scalars and Vectors *The Position-Time Graph and Velocity *Position-Time, Velocity-Time, and Acceleration-Time Graphs *Constant Velocity and Acceleration: Problem UNIT 4 FIELDS *Gravitational Fields and Weight *The Acceleration Due to Gravity *Static and Kinetic Friction *Electric and Magnetic Fields ***Please note that due to time constraints some of these topics may not be covered or new topics may be added EVALUATION: TERM: Tests .... 30% Quizzes Projects and Assignments .. 20% 30%

FINAL EXAM: ...

There will be a quiz, held every Thursday on material recently covered (unless otherwise stated). At the end of each of the four units, there will be a major test covering material from the whole unit. There will be projects given throughout the semester. The final exam will encompass all units covered throughout the course and will be completed during the examination period. The following learning skills will be reported but not evaluated: works independently, teamwork, organization, work habits, and initiative. Homework will be checked periodically and attendance is recorded but not evaluated. Students will receive an updated term mark at the end of each unit and students are expected to keep a record of their progress. Late Assignments: Students must make alternate arrangements with the teacher prior to the due date if they know they will be handing in a late assignment. If this is not done, or if the student does not hand in their assignment on the agreed upon date, then the student will lose 5% of their mark for each day it is late. Missed Tests: Students should expect to write a missed test immediately upon their return back from an absence, unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher. Missed Quizzes: Unless a students absence during a quiz is excused students will receive a zero on any missed quizzes. If the absence is excused, students should expect to write a missed quiz immediately upon their return back from an absence, unless prior arrangements have been made with the teacher.

TO ENSURE SUCCESS, YOUR NOTEBOOK SHOULD LOOK LIKE: A three-ring binder divided into four units by dividers Each page should be titled and dated Tests and quizzes should be placed at the end of the material covered within it Notes need to be neat, titled, and numbered Separate sections may be needed for unit projects IN ORDER TO BE SUCCESSFUL: Come to class prepared to work with notebook, textbook, and writing materials Review your notes frequently (especially before quizzes and tests) If you are unsure of anything, ask questions and/or stay for extra help Have someone in the class you can call to catch up, if you miss a day (see below) Be self-motivated you must accept responsibility for your learning

LABORATORY RULES: Throughout the units of study within this course there will be varying amounts of lab work. This lab work is intended to increase student interest and provide the practical skills that will be useful in later studies. There are, however, two drawbacks: it is potentially dangerous, and much of the equipment is expensive and fragile. If it is mishandled, the cost of replacement is high. To minimize these two disadvantages, the following lab rules will be enforced at all times. Students who repeatedly break lab rules will be counseled individually. If, after counseling, there is no improvement, the student may be withdrawn from lab activities to safety of others in the class.

All equipment must be used according to the teachers instructions Each student must know the location of and how to use: o the fire extinguisher o the fire blanket o the eyewash station o the first aid kit Safety glasses and other safety equipment must be worn when instructed. At the end of the period: o the sink must be clean o the desktop must be clean and dry o all equipment must be cleaned and returned to its original location o no student may leave the lab until dismissed by the teacher
