STEWARDSHIP SAINT FOR FEBRUARY

Saint Josephine Bakhita
Born in western Sudan in 1869, our February stewardship saint recalled having a loving family and happy childhood. At age seven, however, she was abducted by Arab slave traders; the trauma and sheer anguish of which caused her to forget her own name. A slaver sarcastically named her Bakhita, Arabic for lucky. For the next eight years, Bakhita would be sold and resold in African slave markets. She experienced the cruelties, humiliations and sufferings of slavery, including severe emotional abuse, beatings and indescribable mutilations. In 1883, at age14, Bakhita was sold to an Italian consul, who treated her with much kindness. She was gifted to an Italian couple in 1885 who took her to their villa outside Venice where she would become nanny to their infant daughter. Needing to leave the country on business for several weeks in late 1888, the couple entrusted their daughter and Bakhita to the care of a Venetian convent of the Canossian Daughters of Charity. But when time came for the pair to be collected, Bakhita refused to leave. To protect her, the religious superior complained to local authorities. An Italian court ruled that because Sudan had outlawed slavery even before Bakhitas birth and because in any case Italian law did not recognize slavery, Bakhita had never legally been a slave, could not be considered property, and having reached majority age, could make her own decisions. Bakhita chose to remain with the religious community. In 1890, Bakhita received the sacraments of Christian initiation, and embraced the name Josephine. She was eventually admitted into the Canossian community and in 1902, Sister Josephine was assigned to the convent in Schio, a town in the Italian Alps. For the rest of her life, Sister Josephine happily served the community in Schio as sacristan, cook, and portress, the community member appointed to interact with the public and provide hospitality to guests. Besides her humble and faithful stewardship of daily prayer and service, Sister Josephine helped prepare other members for missionary work in Africa. Her gentleness, calming voice, and ever-present smile caught others attention. She was encouraged by her community to tell her story, and in 1931, its publication made her well known throughout Italy. Her life in Schio continued uninterrupted through two world wars. When air-raid sirens sent others scurrying for cover during World War II, Sister Josephine, unfazed, would continue her cooking or sweeping. Many believed their town escaped serious damage because of her saintliness and felt protected by her mere presence. Sister Josephine died on February 8, 1947. Since then, many have sought her prayerful intercession, especially those who experience any form of slavery, and those who need to find peace, forgiveness and reconciliation in their lives. She was canonized a saint in 2000 by Blessed John Paul II. Her feast day is February 8. St. Josephine Bakhita, pray for us.

(even if you've been told not to!)

Tuesday, February 26 from 7-9pm Do you wish you felt confident singing in church? We want to help! Director of Music, Bill Runge, and cantor and local singing teacher, Jennifer McCormick, invite all adult parishioners to a group singing class geared to help those who like to sing but aren't sure how. EVERYONE is invited to this fun, safe class, especially if your first thought is, "I'm a terrible singer." You will learn a little about how to sing louder and prouder, and then we'll learn as a group some of the music for upcoming Masses. So bring your smile, a hand mirror if you have one, and your vocal chords, and learn to love your voice!

Wednesday Mornings after the 8:30 am Mass Our congratulations to Father Peter and Kevin O'Connor who on January 21st obtained their 2nd and 3rd degrees in the Knights of Columbus at St. James in Glen Ellyn. Also, congratulations to Mark Lukaszek who on January 27th obtained his 1st,2nd and 3rd degrees in the Knights of Columbus at Holy Rosary Council in Arlington Heights. Anyone interested in joining or knowing someone who would like to join the Knights of Columbus at Christ the King, please contact Ed Schumann at (630)627-8213. Lord, You are a good and loving Father. I have great confidence that you are listening to me. Our world needs many priests, deacons and consecrated men and women to serve your church. I offer my sufferings, my illness, the infirmities of old age, and my personal inconveniences for your greater honour and glory. Encourage our generous young people to listen to, and discern your call. Show them how they can best serve their brothers and sisters in Christ. Oh God, may my sickness be my prayer when I have no words. I ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. All are welcome to come to one or all 10! We meet in the parish life center after the Wednesday 8:30 am Mass. Feb 13, 2013 Week 6: A Body Both Suffering and Glorious- The Mystical Union of Christ and the Church. Clearly answering the question, What is the Church? Father Barron presents the reality of the Church as one, holy, catholic and apostolic. The Body of Christ can be seen all over the earth, while still escaping total understanding as the mystical union between Christ and his Church. Feb 20, 2013 Week 7: Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven- The Churchs Sacrament & Worship. Father Barron explores the notion that all value is summed up in the liturgy, the supreme act by which we commune with God. Considered by the Catholic Faith to be the source and summit of its identity and mission, the Eucharist is the central practice of the Churchs culture. Feb 27, 2013 Week 8: A Vast Company of WitnessesThe Communion of Saints Father Barron gives consideration to some of the Churchs greatest heroes, and demonstrates their extraordinary examples display both the passion and the creative potential of the Catholic Church. Highlighting Katherine Drexl, Therese of Liseux, Edith Stein, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Father Barron tells the story of the church as a vast company of witnesses who are called by Christ to be a communion of saints.

Pope Benedict on Music: Latin in Liturgy

I would be in favor of a new openness toward the use of Latin. Latin in the Mass has come meanwhile to look to us like a fall from grace. So that, in any case, communication is ruled out that is very necessary in areas of mixed culture... Let's think of tourist centers, where it would be lovely for people to recognize each other in something they have in common. So we ought to keep such things alive and present. If even in the great liturgical celebrations in Rome, no one can sing the Kyrie or the Sanctus any more, no one knows what Gloria means, then a cultural loss has become a loss of what we share in common. To that extent I should say that the Liturgy of the Word should always be in the mother tongue, but there ought nonetheless to be a basic stock of Latin elements that would bind us together. [God and the World, SF, CA: Ignatius, 2002, pp. 417-18]

Ash Wednesday
Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. (Joel 2:13) The liturgical use of ashes originated in the Old Testament times. Ashes symbolized mourning, mortality and penance. In the Book of Esther, Mordecai put on sackcloth and ashes when he heard of the decree of King Ahasuerus to kill all of the Jewish people in the PerRemember that sian Empire (Esther 4:1). Job repented in sackcloth and you are dust, and ashes (Job 42:6). Prophesying the Babylonian captivity of unto dust you shall Jerusalem, Daniel wrote, "I turned to the Lord God, pleadreturn ing in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes" (Daniel 9:3). Jesus made reference to ashes, "If the miracles worked in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have reformed in sackcloth and ashes long ago" (Matthew 11:21). In the Middle Ages, the priest would bless the dying person with holy water, saying, "Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shalt return." The Church adapted the use of ashes to mark the beginning of the penitential season of Lent, when we remember our mortality and mourn for our sins. In our present liturgy for Ash Wednesday, we use ashes made from the burned palm branches distributed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. The priest blesses the ashes and imposes them on the foreheads of the faithful, making the sign of the cross and saying, "Remember, man you are dust and to dust you shall return," or "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel." As we begin this holy season of Lent in preparation for Easter, we must remember the significance of the ashes we have received: We mourn and do penance for our sins. We again convert our hearts to the Lord, who suffered, died, and rose for our salvation. We renew the promises made at our baptism, when we died to an old life and rose to a new life with Christ. Finally, mindful that the kingdom of this world passes away, we strive to live the kingdom of God now and look forward to its fulfillment in heaven.

What is Lent?
Lent is the forty day period before Easter, excluding Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter Sunday). [This traditional ennumeration does not precisely coincide with the calendar according to the liturgical reform. In order to give special prominence to the Sacred Triduum (Mass of the Lord's Supper, Good Friday, Easter Vigil) the current calendar counts Lent as only from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday, up to the Mass of the Lord's Supper. Even so, Lenten practices are properly maintained up to the Easter Vigil, excluding Sundays, as before.] Almighty and everlasting God, you despise nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent. Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our brokenness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Whats happeningFebruary 2013

February is the shortest month of the year and yet, the calendar is full of things to do. Get out your pencil, mark down the following dates. Plan to join us! February 13 - Ash Wednesday Lent begins early this year with Easter being celebrated on March 31st. In the magazine Christ is our Hope, Sr. Ann Shields suggests that we pray the Stations of the Cross during Lent. This can be done at church any time the church is open and Mass is not being said. Or we could pray the Stations at home. This could be done daily, by simply spending a few minutes thinking about each of the Stations and saying a prayer. Using pictures from prayer books or a Bible would be of help. Another suggestion if your schedule permits, come to Church for the Stations of the Cross at noon on Fridays during Lent. You are welcome to stay after Stations for a cup of soup. February 14 - Valentines Day - Reading about St. Valentine, we learned that he was a kind and giving priest who was martyred in Rome in 269 AD under the reign of Claudius II for helping fellow Christians and refusing to deny Christ. He has come to be known as the patron saint of love, young people and happy marriages. Today we see many examples of love as portrayed in the media. How do they compare with St. Valentines message of caring and service? What does scripture tells us about love? Spend a few minutes on Valentines Day and read Colossians 3:12-14. Have a Happy St. Valentines Day!

We are no longer accepting Ultra receipts until they run the program again next school year. We appreciate your support! Please continue to collect Box Tops and Campbells soup labels. Containers are in the Narthex.

THE 2013 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL

THE LORD SUSTAINS HIS PEOPLE
This week, you are asked to review the Annual Appeal tabloid that you will receive with your bulletin today. The Annual Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable over 10 months. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on Gods gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. He never forgets you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry, and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

A Stewardship Moment
In the first reading from Isaiah we get a glimpse of the ultimate aim of Christian stewardship: Giving glory to God. Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory! This proclamation inspires the familiar hymn we sing at the end of the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer; a very ancient proclamation in our liturgy. We were born to give God glory, and we proclaim it by the way we live the Eucharist and bear witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ. As we approach the purifying season of Lent let us ask ourselves: Are we committed to a life that gives glory to God? To my Christ the King family, I wish to thank every one for their prayers and support during this extremely difficult time. Again I know in my heart God will not give us more to bear than we can handle, but this time it is getting close to the limit. I cannot adequately thank everyone for their support including our morning prayer group, the CCW women, the music ministry and just all the other parishioners who are pulling Kelly and myself thru this impossible time with their offers of help and prayers. I know God put all of you in our life because we need you, and I thank you ever so much! Lynn Zelenka

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.
