The Little Things Matter

Joseph Cassidy

t Elios Foot Comfort Centre, Mario and Rob DiFelice blend old-school skills with cutting-edge technology to make sure that every customer has a solution to their needs. We pay extra attention to people, said Mario DiFelice, who has been involved in the footwear industry for over 20 years with his brother, Rob. The customer who is coming in here with problems needs extra care if they are elderly and we will do that. We give everyone the same amount of attention, but if the doctor is sending their patient here we have to make sure we are an extension of that professional care. If the doctor has the trust to send a patient here, we have to take care of them. Since 1970, Elios Foot Comfort Centre has been taking care of people. The familyowned business just entered its 41st year of operation on Front St. in Thorold, but the business has a whole new look to it. We put a whole new face-lift in the front

with a new faade done with stone and stucco, putting in new doors, new windows, a new sign, some in-store renovations and renovating the production area in back, said Mario. It has been long overdue, and we want to help revitalize downtown Thorold. We are doing our part to show a commitment to the downtown area. After Elio DiFelice started the business in 1970, his two sons, Mario and Rob, were incorporated on to the shop floor in the 1990s. After expanding their square footage and product lines, the brothers invested a substantial amount of capital into machinery and training to accommodate customers and provide the best technology and care available. Now, the business has 13 employees and can accommodate any need when it comes to comfort. Ninety-percent of their inventory is orthotic-friendly footwear for males and females of any age. We have adapted with the times and went with more orthopedic services because there is an aging population here. said Mario.

We have gotten into custom orthotics, custom-made shoes and now we have hired professionals, pedorthists, a master craftsman shoemaker and do everything on site. There is a big demand for these products, and the more we are getting involved the more we are getting referrals from doctors who have patients with problems. With comfort in mind, the DiFelice brothers also are planning out how they can continue to keep their customers walking comfortably tomorrow and in the future. We are looking to expand at our current location, both on the sales floor and in the production facility, so we can accommodate the increasing demand for comfort footwear, custom-made shoes and orthotics, said Mario. Also, we want to expand our referral base with local physicians and reinforce to them that they can rely on us to keep their patients walking in comfort.

Carlo and his associate, CJ have become certified tricologists, which means that they specialize in the natural approach to hair loss and hair thinning. This feat has been long in the works. In 1992, a close childhood friend of Carlo and Tina passed away from cancer. Frustrated with the quality of wigs that were available at the time, she had asked them to find the means of providing others with improved hair pieces.

Let me give you some food for thought. In a house, the most valuable thing is the house. In most homes the second hand value of the content is worth less than $5,000. Why? Because items you purchase for your use or decoration do not add value. They are like a car losing value the day you drive it off the lot. So, what are the items that do keep or increase in value? All items in demand by present day fashion, as well as rarities, unusual items, some collectibles and works of art. To find out which are these items, it is wise to have a reputable and knowledgeable appraiser sort out and valuate things before you start the selling process. When you know, you make better decisions. In the era of the Internet there are no secrets, everything is available to everyone worldwide, and only quality and excitement leads to good prices. Items in demand today are fine wooden furniture, items such as 1880s East Lake, Duncan Phyfe, Art Deco and Contemporary Design. Also on the rise are: coins, military, watches, autographs, documents, corkscrews, and even early electronics. The good thing is: that with very different taste and demand today the world is your buyer. A special section should be made for coins, jewellery, watches and other gold and sterling silver items. If an item is not sellable because it is out of style, used up, or damaged, then it is worth it precious metal value. As a collectible or jewel it should sell at an adequate value.

Why and How Todays Seniors Buy Real Estate

Glenn Betts has a 30-year background in real estate sales with extensive experience in writing for real estate, fundraising, and a variety of other businesses. Heres what he has to say about what type of real estate seniors are buying. Not too many years ago, selling to seniors meant finding senior housing. That generally meant a scaled-down home that offered low maintenance, all-on-onefloor living, and close proximity to medical services. But seniors have changed. While a few may still follow the old pattern, for the most part, todays older set doesnt want to retire to a box. They have no intention of spending their days watching TV and going to doctors appointments. They may want a low maintenance home because they have too many other things to do. They may also require a home with ample parking and lack of covenants and restrictions - so they can park a large mobile home during the months when theyre not traveling. They may want to move to be near grandchildren. But if they dont, they may need a multi-bedroom home because they anticipate having their children and grand-children as visitors on a regular basis. Todays seniors may want to live near a golf course, a pool, a health club, or a mall. They may want to choose a community with plenty of opportunity for volunteer work. They may prefer to be in an area that offers a wide choice of fine dining opportunities, the theater, with easy access to shopping. They may even want a location where they can operate a small business - either from home or close by. Some have dreamed of a home business for their entire working life and finally have the freedom to go after it. The difference is that people are staying healthy longer. Retired people arent finished having fun, but instead may just be beginning to have fun. After years of being tied to the 9

to 5 grind, theyre ready for new adventures. We treat our senior clients with the highest degree of respect and continually ask them about their goals and their plans, along with finding out what benefits and features are most important to them. Once we have collected all the information we can make suggestions and give advice based on what they tell us. For instance, if they plan to spend time traveling, you might recommend a gated community with security rather than a secluded location - for the safety of their home while theyre away. Buying a residence as a senior citizen can be both exciting and daunting. The excitement stems from anticipating new beginnings in a fresh environment. It can be daunting because there are so many types of Senior Residences, finite resources and sometimes emotional hurdles to overcome. Knowing how to best serve home buyers, sellers and investors at all stages of life is another way Glenn Betts adds value to each real estate transaction.

Everyone has a little country and western in them and here you will find cowboy boots, hats, western clothing, gloves, scarves, jewellery and more. Their boots are from Justin, Canada West, Abbilene and Old West, while the hats are from Bullhide, Renegade, Bailey and Akubra. HorseWorld has a large selection of Wrangler riding jeans. They offer various health care products for the horse and dog. If they dont have a certain item in stock, Breck can get it for you. Plus, his customers can purchase gift certificates or choose from hundreds of items on his website: horseworldemporium.ca.

As Niagaras most versatile tack shop, HorseWorld Emporium also operates a 1,000 square foot leather shop where Brecks staff can repair, make and personalize all kinds of leather projects. Here, customers can choose from English bridle leather, Latigo, garment met with Breck Foerstner, the owner of HorseWorld Emporium leather or different weights of harness leather. HorseWorld can also in St. Catharines. His fascinating background in business and provide brass hardware, as well as nickel plated rings and buckles farming explains his love for horses and why he purchased the for their custom jobs. There is also a well stocked consignment HorseWorld Emporium in the mid 1980s. He did so, to share his section. wealth of knowledge with the horse world and also to continue his own love for the animal. HorseWorld is a full service tack shop, As for Breck, he is also known as a barefoot trimmer for horses. offering old fashioned service to a local and international clientele. A craft that takes many years to perfect. Breck says, We want to make our customers happy and satisfied. At this time, I was looking for a challenge, Breck explained. Our emporium has turned into everything I could have asked for and more. Breck was taught how to ride horses by Ex-German Calvary Officers. He then went to school in the United States and road herd in Oklahoma. From there, he progressed through many different stages in his life, including working as a sales manager for Bell Canada. He then became sales manger for a grass seed company. From there he became a turkey, poult, hatching egg sales person. He started his own turkey breeder farm in the 1970s and produced hatching eggs. He was soon put in charge of the European operation of Ralston Purinas turkey and poultry division. During this time, he helped design breeder farms in Hungary during the Russian occupation in the 1970s. He then returned and bought his second farm north of Guelph in the early 1980s. It was a turkey hatching egg production facility along with cattle and a sow operation. Unfortunately, after ten years, Breck suffered a serious car accident which forced him to sell his ranch. When he sold the ranch he bought a bankrupted travel agency in St. Catharines. Once taking ownership, he built the agency into the number 2 position in the Niagara Region. When the previous owner of HorseWorld decided to close the tack shop, Breck saw this as an opportunity to get back involved with his original love of horses. HorseWorld Emporium stocks a huge selection of saddles and tack items for both the equestrian and western horse rider. For the equestrian, Breck has saddles made by St. Lourdes, Courbettte

Downsizing From the Family Home John Bauslaugh

Sheila Corriveau, Broker ASA and Carly Corinthos, Sales Representative, SRES from Coldwell Banker Advantage Real Estate Inc., Brokerage in Welland specialize in working with needs of the 55+ seniors market including helping them to downsize from their family homes to smaller, more manageable accommodations. The physical down-sizing process is by far the most daunting part of making a later-in-life move. Sheilas and Carlys tips and insights should help whether youre the older adult ready to face this task, or whether youre the adult child who has offered to help your parents with their living transition. Begin in the areas of the house that you are currently not using. Many older adults are still living in the same houses where they raised their families. In most situations, there are areas of the house that are currently not being used, like the upstairs bedrooms, the basement family room or others. Start the sorting and clearing process in these rooms because it will be least disruptive to everyday life. These areas also often contain lots of items that have not been used in a considerable length of time and that will not be missed when passed on to children, grandchildren, charity or the auction house. Begin with the large Items in each room and work your way down to the small items. The rationale for this? Its easier to start with furniture and the bigger pieces and youll feel like you are making some progress. If you start with the small items, you may get overwhelmed and frustrated before you even get started. Sort the items in each room as follows. Items that you want to keep as you move forward into the later stages of your life (this includes items you are not currently ready to part with or items that you definitely know you will want to move with you to your new home). Items that will be passed on to family or friends. Items that will be sold via a garage sale or auction. Items that will be given to charity. Items that need to be thrown away. Tell your kids that its time for them to collect the things that they still have stored at your house. Allow plenty of flexibility and time for the sorting and downsizing and trust the process. Remember that your goal is to simplify your life.

TESTIMONIAL -- LEAHS STORY

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome 20 years ago. I was prescribed standard pain medications. For many years before planning anything I would have to wait and see how I was feeling. While skating backwards, I fell hard and hurt my shoulder, neck and banged my head. By the time I got home, I could hardly turn my head. I tried to take care of the problem at home. However, the pain and stiness became too severe over the next week that I could not sleep well. I was examined and xrays were taken to help diagnose my problem and to determine what type of treatment would be the most benecial for me. Initially, my Chiropractor worked on my neck muscles and adjusted my upper back. I felt so much better and the stiness and pain had started to subside quickly. This relief was new to me after suering for so many years. The level of pain that I experience now has decreased immensely and I need less pain medication to function. Every day has improved signicantly.

Plant & Rake Without the Ache

is deceptively strenuous. In a recent poll, 88 per cent of Ontario chiropractors indicated that working in the garden and yard were the most common sources of neck and back pain they treat during the warm weather season. To help you enjoy the fruits of your labour during this yard and gardening season, we recommend you keep these tips in mind: Stretch before you head out. Take the time to prepare your body for activity; always warm-up and cool down your muscles. Add a short walk and youll have topped off your routine with overall conditioning. Now youre ready for your open-air workout. THE RIGHT MOVES Using the right moves can go a long way to enabling you to plant and rake without the ache. Positioning your body correctly reduces strain on muscles and joints. LIFT RIGHT Make sure your back is straight. And always bend your knees. Carry the load close to your body. Avoid heavy lifting immediately after bending or kneeling. KNEEL TO PLANT Use knee pads or a kneeling mat to reduce the strain while you plant and weed. Keep your back straight and stop frequently to take a break. RAKE RIGHT Ease the strain on your back by putting one leg in front, the other behind. Switch legs and hands from time to time. ALTERNATE Heavy. Light. Heavy. Light. Thats the right way to handle those chores. CHANGE HANDS Take the strain off by changing the position of your hands. CHECK YOUR POSITION And change it often. Kneel. Then stand. Or simply sit and relax for a while. THE RIGHT TOOLS Choose tools that are ergonomically designed, with padded handles and spring action. Make sure the size and weight are right for you. And always choose the proper tool for the job. Here are a few more tips to lighten your load: a hose is easier to manage than a watering can a good cart, or dolly, makes moving heavier loads a breeze a wheelbarrow that is lightweight and has two wheels is a good idea separate a larger load into several small ones select comfortable, thick soled, supportive shoes cover up with a wide-brimmed hat, wear gloves and sunscreen use ergonomically designed, long handled, lightweight tools Dont forget to get-up, move around, alternate tasks, repeat your stretch routine, or sit back, relax, and have a cool drink. Try not to overexert yourself, and take three brief breaks at least once every hour. Give yourself a breather ... your back will thank you! If you have back or muscle pain that lasts more than 48-hours without improvement, visit a chiropractor. Chiropractors play an important role in providing preventative education and early detection of spinal problems, as well as providing expert care for back, muscle, joint pain and injury.

St. Catharines War Memorials

t. Catharines is home to eight War Memorials, dating as far back as 1886. As the Town of Merritton, Village of Port Dalhousie and Grantham Township were incorporated with St. Catharines in 1961, so too did their war memorials. Over the last several years much work has been done to research their history, and to assess and plan for needed repairs. Community support has been strong for the preservation of these Cenotaphs, which honour the men and women who have stood for our freedoms over generations. The word cenotaph means empty grave, and acknowledges the loss of life that is represented by these stone and metal structures. Several of our War Memorials name those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Others simply and elegantly recognize the conflicts that have been fought by local men and women. The front doors of City Hall are surrounded by elegant bronze plaques that serve as our Honour Rolls, with the names of men and women who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. Another plaque at City Halls main entrance commemorates the St. Catharines recipients of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valour in the British Empire. Private Alexander Watson died during the Northwest Rebellion, and community sentiment was such that funds were raised to erect the figure that now graces the front lawn of City Hall. The oldest monument in the collection, Private Watson also honours those from St. Catharines who were lost in the Second Boer War. Merritton (Merritt Street) and Port Dalhousie (Ann Street) each have beautiful Cenotaphs built circa 1921, and it is believed their statues were carved by artist Emmanuel Paul. These Cenotaphs have been recent greening projects of the St. Catharines Green Committee and are now surrounded with beautiful, new landscapes. The grounds of Victoria Lawn Cemetery house the Grantham Cenotaph and the Korea Veterans Associations Memorial. Also in the cemetery is the 10th Field Battery R.C.A. Memorial, built circa 1965, and the Royal Canadian Legions Monument, built in 1990. The largest monument is the St. Catharines Cenotaph, located in Memorial Park, on what is now referred to as Veterans Way (St. Paul Street West). Unveiled on August 7, 1927, the first wreath was laid by His Royal Highness, Edward, Prince of Wales, who made a brief stop at the ceremony as he travelled through Niagara. At the time, the monument was a tribute to the memory of the 300 St. Catharines men who gave their lives for the British Empire in 1915-1918. Today, it also commemorates World War II, the Korean War, the United Nations Peacekeepers and the Canadian Merchant Navy.

This fall community members will see work begin on two of our memorials: the Port Dalhousie Cenotaph and the St. Catharines Cenotaph. In July 2009, a heritage conservator was hired by the City of St. Catharines to evaluate the condition of these memorials. His report revealed that the St. Catharines Cenotaph is in need of significant restoration. The repair of this Cenotaph is a complicated affair, and this fall a team will temporarily remove its top to review the interior condition of the monument. Last year, the eagle eyes of Port Dalhousie Legion member Brian Bowman espied space beneath the Port Dalhousie statue, and a quick investigation confirmed that the statue is lifting off its pins and will require re-installing. This work is set to take place this fall, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Dalhousie Branch 350, is set to contribute to these repairs, matching a requested grant from the Minister of Veterans Affairs as well as City funds. The costs to repair the St. Catharines Cenotaph are estimated at $200,000 or more, and to meet this goal, fundraising projects have been underway since 2010. On May 12, 2010 the City of St. Catharines hosted a concert by The Stadacona Band of Canadian Forces Atlantic that celebrated the Canadian Naval Centenary. The concert had over 300 attendees and raised $3,000, thanks to generous contributors in the community. Significant contributions have been made by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24 ($10,000) and the Royal Canadian Legion, Polish Branch 418 ($3,000) in support of the Cenotaphs restoration. Other community members have also stepped forward and the total raised to date is $17,000. These funds will be used to match a grant request to the Minister of Veterans Affairs, as well as funds from the Citys capital budget.

Community members can expect to hear more about these projects in future. If youre looking for a worthy project for your donations, consider the needs of St. Catharines historic monuments. Their preservation ensures that Canadas story of valour and sacrifice is shared with future generations.

Life After The Penny

(NC)Do you remember where you were on February 4, 2013 when the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) stopped issuing pennies? Perhaps you walked by one on the sidewalk but didnt bother to pick it up to your peril. There goes your chance of having a lucky day, as the old adage goes. Oh well, it doesnt really matter now does it? Research by Desjardins Groups economists found that maintaining the penny costs Canadians an estimated $150M a year. Thanks in part to this analysis, the federal government announced last year that it would withdraw the one-cent coin. Dont worry though; this definitely wasnt a case of being penny wise and pound foolish. Frankly, the penny lost its shine ages ago: it costs 1.6 each to produce and its purchasing power has been greatly reduced partly because Canadians have been hording them for years. the economy in general due to the reduction in handling costs for retailers, financial institutions and consumers. As a result, the transition costs for the government to gradually withdraw the penny which may be in the tens of millions of dollars over the next few years will be minimal compared to the recurring annual savings Canadians will see down the line. Gone but not forgotten Although the RCM is no longer minting the penny, it will maintain its value and legal tender indefinitely. And some businesses will still accept it as a form of payment. As pennies are withdrawn from circulation, prices will be rounded to the nearest nickel for cash transactions. Non-cash transactions (debit card, credit card, prepaid card, cheque, etc.) will continue to be settled to the nearest cent. What will the RCM do with all the lowly pennies that are returned? They will be melted down and recycled, which will create a revenue source for the government to help offset the transition costs. Great use for your old copper If youre the proud owner of a terrarium full of pennies and would rather not roll and return the lot to your local financial institution, consider donating them to a local charity. Here is a snapshot of tips to maximize pension contributions and your Registered Retirement Savings Plans: Individuals who are paying Canada pension plan (CPP) and/or employment insurance (EI) premiums may claim a 15 per cent federal tax credit and 5.05 per cent provincial tax credit on the amount paid. Contribute to your RRSP early in the year. If, for example, you contribute $22,970 the maximum possible annual contribution amount for 2012 at the beginning of the year instead of at the end, over a 25-year period, assuming a five per cent rate of return, you would have an extra $54,800 in your RRSP. If you are an employee who is making regular RRSP contributions, request that the amount of income tax withheld on your pay cheque be reduced in order to reflect the savings those contributions will bring. This is a more efficient way to manage your money. You dont have to deduct an RRSP contribution in the year it is made; instead, you can carry it forward for deduction in a future period when you have income placing you in a higher tax bracket. Be sure you have used all personal tax credits before deducting your RRSP contribution. If you are at least 65, consider creating pension income by converting part of your RRSP to a life annuity or an RRIF if your financial circumstances warrant such a move. Contributing to a spousal RRSP also creates potential pension income for your spouse or common-law partner. Pension income splitting can be a good strategy to minimize overall family taxes if the spouse to whom the funds are being transferred has low, or no other sources of income.

Calming Effect: Women Can Overcome Leading Health Threat

(NC)Chilling out can turn down the heat on incident rates of heart attacks and strokes among women, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Heart disease and stroke is a leading cause of death for women in Canada, and kills seven times more women than breast cancer. Gender is also a key determinant:women are more likely than men to die of a heart attack or stroke. However, women can reduce their risk by putting themselves first and making healthy lifestyle choices. Key among them is managing stress, a difficult task for those juggling work, family and home life, says Bobbe Wood, the foundations president. Financial worries, project deadlines and ensuring the happiness of a child can often overwhelm us, she adds. Almost one quarter of Canadians report a high degree of life stress, states a report co-published by the foundation and the Canadian Mental Health Association. Combine this with a womans risk for heart attack and stroke and you have a potentially deadly duo. High blood pressure and high cholesterol levels are major risk factors for heart attack and stroke among women. We have to take action by making healthy lifestyle choices, stresses Wood. Talking to your doctor and controlling these levels are essential for women to make good health last and lead long, full and vital lives. Diet and exercise are also important influences to combating heart attacks and stroke. Wood suggests the following to put you on the right track: three sessions of weight-bearing exercises and 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise (in minimum of 10-minute increments) each week; seven to eight servings of vegetables and fruit each day; and limited consumption of saturated and trans fats and sodium. Smoking is an obvious culprit. Within one year of going cold turkey, a womans risk of suffering a smokingrelated heart attack is cut in half. While smoking is an addiction and quitting may be difficult, with help and a plan, it may become easier, says Wood. Aside from talking to your doctor, Wood also recommends women assess their risk for heart disease and stroke by taking an online quiz at TheHeartTruth. ca/quiz.

Stay Healthy When Stressed

(NC)According to a survey commissioned by the Florida Department of Citrus, 38 per cent of Canadians rate their stress level as high. While 77 per cent believe that eating a balanced diet with seven to 10 daily servings of fruits and vegetables can help their physical and mental well-being 36 per cent say that stress contributes to their inability to maintain a healthy diet. This can lead to illness, another common side effect for one in four Canadians. Its important to maintain a balanced diet, especially when youre stressed, says registered dietitian, Lydia Knorr. Citrus fruit and juice are delicious, easy to incorporate into meals, and they provide key vitamins that help support the immune system as well as overall health. This recipe is a healthy update on a winter favourite that incorporates Florida orange and grapefruit juices into a comforting dish. Black Bean Florida Citrus Chili with Avocado Cream 1 tbsp (15 mL) canola oil 1 onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 green pepper, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced 1 tbsp (15 mL) ancho chili powder 1 1/2 tsp (7 mL) ground cumin 1/2 tsp (2 mL) smoked paprika 2 cans (19 oz/540 mL each) black beans, drained and rinsed 1 can (28 oz/796 mL) stewed tomatoes 1/2 cup (125 mL) each Florida orange and grapefruit juices 2 tbsp (30 mL) chopped fresh cilantro 2 tbsp (30 mL) tomato paste 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh oregano 1 avocado 1/3 cup (75 mL) sour cream 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh cilantro 1 tbsp (15 mL) Florida grapefruit juice In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. Cook onion, garlic, green and jalapeno peppers, chili powder, cumin and paprika for 8 minutes. Stir in beans, tomatoes, orange and grapefruit juices, tomato paste, cilantro and oregano. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes. In a separate bowl, mash avocado until smooth. Stir in sour cream, cilantro, grapefruit juice and salt. To serve:
No back pain, no sore knees and no sore ankles
I saw an article in a weekly newspaper about how great LeafSource was. Well I have suffered with a sore back for the last 20 years and I also have sore knees and ankles, seems like I have had them forever. I am 71 years old so, I started taking LeafSource 2 tablets twice a day 7pm and 7am for four days nothing happened so I increased the dosage 2 tablets three times per day every eight hours. The following day my sore back was gone. The next day knees and ankles were painless. I have been outside doing yard work and it is amazing how much I am getting done and still feeling great. For over two weeks now I have no back pain, no sore knees and no sore ankles! LeafSource is the best I have ever used by far. Thank You. Rae - Medicine Hat, AB

I am pretty stunned what this has done for me in 8 days of taking LeafSource. I am a super active 54 year young guy. When I was 40 I had to stop playing my passion...which is hockey. I had a serious case of siatica which caused me extreme discomfort the next few days at work after I played. I would work through it by power stretching, walking... whatever I had to do to go back on the ice in the next couple of days. So for 18 years I have tried many many products ...most of them expensive. And most did not work at all. I had been on a mission to nd a product that is doing exactly what LeafSource is doing. So here I am on day 9 with 90% of my pain gone. Yesterday was day 8 and I jumped on my bicycle to go get some more LeafSource.

Smart Snacking Tips

(NC)When youre busy and on-the-go, having healthy food choices in a snap is a must. There are a lot of snack options to choose from, but not all of them are good choices for a healthy lifestyle. The best snacks contain beneficial nutrients and ingredients you can actually pronounce. Snacks with protein and fibre and that are low in sugar will keep you energized and curb your hunger so you can avoid making poor choices later in the day. The best way to keep your snack habits in check is to know yourself. Pay attention to when youre hungry and what youre craving the most (sweets, salty and crunchy, etc.), and figure out some go-to healthy alternatives to fit these cravings. Then, take a few minutes each morning to pack smart snacks for the day and youll be prepared for when hunger hits. Its called smart snacking not only because its healthy, but also because its easy, delicious and satisfying. Portable snack options help prevent crashing or giving in to poor food choices no matter where you are. Try out these tricks courtesy of the Almond Board of California: Invest in a reusable snack bag or resealable bags to keep a stash of your own snacks in your purse, car or gym bag. Keep non-perishable snacks in your office or desk drawer, like instant oatmeal, almonds, baked chips, pretzels, dried fruit and a jar of almond butter. Add fresh ingredients such as yogurt, apples, grapes, cheese or whole-wheat toast to create a variety of snack combinations. Seek out smart snacks on the road, such as pre-packaged vegetables and dip, edamame, fruit and cheese, baked snacks or nutty trail mixes that you can portion out mindfully. Snack bars that use whole, unprocessed ingredients are perfect for stashing in carry-on baggage. Bottled vegetable juices contain nutrients and fibre in a pinch; just be careful about added sugar. Fraud Prevention Tips For Older Adults

(NC)Seniors are all too often the target of fraudulent phone calls and email scams. Many security experts agree that older adults can be seen as profitable targets for fraudsters in part because seniors are often thought to have a nest egg and an excellent credit rating. What makes this even more alarming is that research shows seniors who do become victims of fraud are not telling their friends or family. This is an important step to help law enforcement catch the criminals and prevent fraud in the future. According to a Visa Canada survey, approximately half of all seniors over the age of 65 who have been victimized by fraud do not tell anyone about their ordeal, says Gord Jamieson, head of security for Visa Canada. Individuals should never be embarrassed to talk to family, friends or their bank if they have questions or are worried they may be a victim of fraud. Jamieson points out that there are many things seniors, and all Canadians, can do to help safeguard their personal information and prevent fraud. He recommends the following tips for the young at heart: Always treat your cards as if they were cash, and dont leave them in places where they are easily accessible to anyone. Always report lost or stolen cards immediately to your bank. Always make a list of all your card numbers and keep this list in a safe place. Always create a PIN that is hard to guess (e.g. not a birthday or phone number). Always be cautious when asked for personal information over the phone when you didnt initiate the call. Never share your PIN not even with family, friends or caregivers. Never keep a written copy of your PIN in your wallet or purse. Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone, ever. Never agree to a free trial or sample without reading the terms and conditions. You may be agreeing to future monthly charges which arent free. More fraud prevention tips can be found online at www.
