Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) for Agricultural, Construction, Earth Moving, Forestry, Industrial and Mining Machines - Part 1: General Requirements
Scope and Application: The intent of this bulletin is to provide general information as part of the series of standards detailing the design, testing, performance, and safety requirements for rollover protective structures (ROPS) for Agricultural, Construction, Earth Moving, Forestry, Industrial, and Mining Machines. This standard is a companion to other standards of the B352 series and can only be used in conjunction with each of the standards. The testing of ROPS aims at minimizing the likelihood of operator injury resulting from accidental overturning during normal operation. Although ROPS meeting the requirements of this series of standards may not provide crush protection under all circumstances of machine overturn, it is expected that protection will be provided for an operator wearing a seatbelt under at least the following conditions: (a) a 360 roll about the machines longitudinal axis on a hard clay surface of 30 maximum slope, at forwards speeds up to 16 km/h, when not losing contact with the slope; and (b) a 180 rear or frontal overturn on a hard dry surface, without losing contact with the surface. Definitions: Agricultural Tractor - a self-propelled wheeled machine designed to pull, carry, or power agricultural implements. Backhoe Loader an industrial loader with an integral backhoe. Cantilevered ROPS a ROPS with a roof fabricated from cantilevered structural members. Clearance Zone (CZ) a volume used to establish deflection limits for agricultural ROPS evaluated according to CSA Standard B352.1. The CZ is determined with the tractor placed horizontally in its normal operation mode and, where applicable, with the steering wheel adjusted to mid-position for seated driving. Column a vertical or inclined structural member that can be loaded in compression or bending. Compactor a self-propelled machine designed for compacting soil or similar material and equipped with a seat at the operators station. Encroachment Intrusion into the operators space and defined for each specific load test performed. Industrial Tractor a self-propelled wheeled machine designed to pull, carry, or power industrial implements, such as highway mowers, towed rollers, and loaders. Motor Grader a self-propelled wheeled machine with an adjustable blade positioned between the front and rear wheels and designed for smoothing, levelling, or windrowing soil or similar materials. Prime Mover a self-propelled machine used for powering and controlling attachments, such as scrapers and dump wagons. Rigid Frame Dumper - a front- or rear-wheel steered self-propelled machine having an open cargo body, designed to transport and dump or spread materials. Roll Bar a ROPS without structural members in its roof and with its columns in one plane. Roller a self-propelled machine designed for rolling soil or similar materials and equipped with a seat at the operators station. (Over)

(contd) Skidder a self-propelled wheeled or tracked machine designed to transport felled to trees by dragging, generally with a portion of the payload lifted off the ground, by either wire rope or a bottom-opening skidding grapple. Structural Member a main load-supporting column or cross member used in ROPS fabrication. Tracked Dozer and Tracked Loader self-propelled tracked machines, with integral linkages that can accept tools such as buckets, dozer blades, rippers, logloading grapples, nongrasping tree fellers, or backhoes, at either the front or rear, or may pull a drawbar load. Wheeled Dozer and Wheeled Loader self-propelled wheeled machines with two, or more, drive wheels, with integral linkages that can accept tools such as buckets, dozer blades, rippers, log-loading grapples, nongrasping tree fellers, or backhoes, either at the front or rear, or may pull a draw-bar load.

The standard sets up the framework for the testing of equipment covered for each type of machine. Material Requirements - This standard also discusses general material requirements for machines equipped with ROPS and the requirements are intended to establish the minimum acceptable strength and resistance to brittle fracture at reduced temperatures. Material requirements discussed include structural members and mounts, fasteners, and weld metal. Labelling - All ROPS shall be equipped with a label. The label shall be of a permanent type and permanently attached to all ROPS in a location where are it can be easily read, and located to minimize defacing from weathering or machine use. The ROPS label content shall include the following information, as a minimum: a) name of ROPS manufacturer; b) ROPS identification number; c) the Canadian Standard to which the ROPS was certified; d) the maximum machine mass for which the ROPS in certified (only for ROPS tested according to the CSA Standard be 352.2). Safety Requirements: Seat Belts - Agricultural tractors with ROPS tested according to CSA Standard B352.1 shall be equipped with seat-belt assemblies conforming to the requirements of ISO Standard 3776. All machines with ROPS tested according to CSA B352.2 shall be equipped with seat belts conforming to the requirements of CSA Standard CAN/CSA M6683. Exits - At least two exits shall be provided and positioned to avoid the possibility of both being blocked by the same accident. The alternate exit shall be no smaller than the following: a) 650 mm in diameter if around; b) 600mm x 600 mm if square; c) 470 mm x 650mm if rectangular. Alternate exits that are not obvious such as pop-out windows shall be clearly labeled as alternative exits, with instructions for egress. Glazing - All glazing shall conform to the requirements set forth in SAE Recommended Practice J674A, except that rigid plastic materials meeting ANSI Standard Z26.1 may be used in all areas on the ROPS including the front windshield. And All sharp edges and corners at the operators station shall be designed to minimize operator injury in the event of an upset. Protection From Spillage - Batteries, fuel tanks, oil reservoirs, and coolant systems shall be constructed, located, or a sealed to minimize operator contact with spillage in an upset. This bulletin contains a summary of excerpts taken from the Standard, for general information purposes only. This bulletin is not reflective of the complete requirements that the Standard prescribes. Note: Manitoba Regulation M.R. 217/2006 Section 1.4 inconsistency: If there is an inconsistency between this regulation and a requirement contained in a publication, code or standard referenced in this regulation, the provisions in this regulation prevail.
