Lesson Title: Substitution in Contest

TEKS Addressed: A.8A analyze situations and formulate systems of linear equations in two unknowns to solve problems A.8B solve systems of equations using algebraic methods A.8C interpret and determine reasonableness of solutions to systems of linear equations. Learning Target: I can formulate and solve a system of linear equations in a problem situation. I can interpret and determine the reasonableness of a solution in a problem situation. Agenda: 1. Check Homework 2. Knowledge Check (aka quiz) Solve by substitution 3. Warm Up Matching Equations and Verbal Descriptions 4. Guided Notes Word Problems 5. Activity - Word Problem Prompts and Problem Solving Template 6. Ticket Out of the Door 7. Homework Substitution Word Problems Introductory Activities: Check Homework: (Plain substitution problems) Teacher will project homework answers on the board. Students will check their own work. Students will log on to the assigned Google Form which asks students which questions they missed. (Teacher will use this data later for spiral review). Teacher will work one or two problems from the homework as needed by students. (10 minutes) Warm Up (Review): Matching Equations and Verbal Descriptions - Students will match the sentence with the appropriate algebraic representation. Students who have their laptops may use the Speed Game online to complete this activity which provides immediate feedback; otherwise, teacher will provide feedback through facilitating questions as students work. (10 minutes) Interacting with New Knowledge: Guided Notes Systems Word Problems (Substitution method) Strategy: WE DO, YOU DO. Teacher guides class through process of breaking apart two word problems. As a whole group, we will describe the variables and create equations (scaffolding practice). Teacher then lets students work

through the substitution part on their own. Class is brought back together to discuss the solutions, and interpret the solutions. Discussion includes reasonableness of the solution in the context. Process is repeated for both types of problems (perimeter and coin problem as tested on PLC Assessment). Teacher illustrates the steps required for success: define variables, write equations, solve by substitution, and interpret the solution. (20 minutes) Practicing and Deepening Knowledge: Partner Problem Solving Activity: Students are assigned partners; Partners are assigned a color representing a series of word problems. Problems are differentiated by color 3 levels. Solutions are on a poster on the board (also color coded). Partners solve the first word problem in their notebooks, check their work, and if their work is correct, they get a stamp from the teacher to move on. Students are working to earn 4 stamps for a 100 daily grade. (40 minutes) Closure: Ticket Out of the Door: online using Today's Meet, "What did you find more difficult, setting up the equations, or solving the equations using substitution?" Homework: 2 Word Problems. Students complete two word problems using the steps learned in class. (15 minutes)
