ENGLISH LANGUAGE
The Preschool English Language Curriculum builds the foundation through the development of the skills of listening, speaking and early literacy. It also aims at enabling pupils to actively communicate with others in their immediate environment as well as develop an enjoyment of the language through the use of stories, poems, songs and games. Through language play they will also imagine and recreate experiences. Vocabulary development will be facilitated through exposure of language related to familiar experiences and things in the environment as well as simple selections from pupils literature. Language development will be supported through the use of context including objects from the real world, pictures, puppets and other props so that language experiences will be meaningful. English will also be learnt actively through meaningful interaction with others. Listening and speaking will include verbal and non verbal communication including the use of body language, facial expression and eye contact. Language will also facilitate the development of emergent literacy. Pupils will be exposed to written language through a variety of materials such as word cards, books, charts, labels, signs and posters. Reading is for pleasure and enjoyment. This book consist of five modules: Module 1 Getting To Know You And Me Module 2 Introducing And Getting To Know The Vowels Module 3 Getting To Know The Letters Of The Alphabet (Vowels and Consenants) Module 4 Getting To Know Words, Phrases And Simple Sentences Module 5 Speak, Read And Write Each Modules is upgraded accordingly to the topic from getting to know the child to knowing how to speak, read and write. From simple topic to more complex and this enhance the child ability to master the language. Work sheets are given to make lessons more easier and example for teachers to follow. Songs and poems comes along so as to make lesson more fun and merrier Objectives The English Language Curriculum aims at enabling pupils to: i. ii. iii. iv. Listen actively with understanding. Express themselves orally in simple English. Read common words and simple sentences independently. Write words and simple sentences.

Other pupils will try to guess the action. (eg: He/She likes reading) 6. The pupil will pretend to pass the magic box to the next pupil. 6. This activity can be carried out until every child gets their turn.

PROCEDURES 1. Pupils are given a piece of art paper. 2. Teacher shows how to print a picture of an apple using sponge and colours. 3. Pupils print the apple and then create ants using fingers and markers on the printed picture. 4. Teacher gives pupils the song lyrics on a piece of paper. 5. Pupils circle all the letters a with a colour pencil on the song lyric sheet. 6. Paste the picture and the song sheet on a piece of manila card as shown below.

Activity B : Getting to know a, e, i, o, u 1. Pupils sit in a circle and wear their masks. The first pupil will introduce himself/herself to the pupil next to him (clockwise) ; Hello I am a . 2. The second pupil will introduce his/her alphabet - Hello I am e . It goes on until all the pupils have introduced themselves as the alphabet they represent. 3. Teacher can use the same introduction method using more complex sentences using the same procedures as above. Example: a. How are you a I am fine thank you. How are you o I am fine thank you b. Activity A : Vowel Masks - a, e, i, o, u 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Print out the worksheet below (A4 size as attached) . Distribute the different alphabet printouts a, e, i, o, u, equally among the pupils in the class. Teacher can give each group different vowel masks eg, letter i, letter e, letter u and letter a (all the vowels). Pupils colour the picture in the print out. Pupils then cut out the parts of the picture and paste them on a piece of manila card to make a mask. Teacher guides the pupils to punch 2 holes on the left and right corner of the masks near the ears. Teacher helps pupils to tie rubber bands near the ears of the mask for the pupils to wear the mask without falling. Once the masks are ready, the teacher can do listening and speaking activities with the pupils

Pupils sit on their chairs in a circle in the classroom. A pupil wearing an alphabet mask goes to the centre of the circle The pupil in the centre says, Big, wind, blows! The rest of the pupils ask, Blows what? The pupil in the centre says, Blows all the a(s)! Pupil in the centre and all those wearing the a masks must get up from their chairs to exchange places with their a masked friends as fast as possible. The pupil without a seat will go to the centre of the circle and repeat the whole game again, naming other vowels. Play the game until all the pupils recognize all the letters of the vowels.

1. Teacher provides the cut out cardboard with vowels printed on it as shown below.

2. Pupils fold the cardboard into a box to make the dice. 3. Teacher also provides a worksheet with vowels printed on it.
4. This game can be played by 2 -4 players.

5. Each pupil take turns to throw the dice. The pupils then looks at the vowels that appear on the top of the dice. He then colours the vowel which appears on the dice. 6. If a pupil throws an X on the dice, he / she misses a turn. - 58 -
Once any of these rows are completed, the child is the winner

PROCEDURES 1. Place alphabet flashcards on the floor. Sixteen at a time is good as this allows four pupils to play in one round. 2. Call one pupil to the front. Say a letter. The pupil stands on or touches that letter on the floor. 3. Call out another letter. Again, the pupil must touch this letter with a free hand or foot. Call out two more letters. Once more, the pupil must place a free hand or foot on these letters. 4. After the first pupil is in place, call up another pupil. Repeat the steps above. You should now have two pupils somewhat twisted together on the floor (as shown in picture 1 1nd 2). 5 . Repeat the above steps with 2 more pupils. Everyone should be laughing now as they struggle to stay in position. Ask the four pupils to sit down and play twister with four new pupils. 6. 1. Distribute the alphabet bingo cards, one each to every pupil. 2. Begin the alphabet bingo game. 3. The teacher or a pupil can be the bingo master, in-charge of drawing the cut-out alphabet and reading out loud each time an alphabet is drawn from a box or bag. 4. The bingo master then pins the drawn alphabet card on the bingo chart / board. 5. The pupils check their alphabets on the bingo card by sticking coloured circle on top of the alphabet read out by the bingo master. 6. PROCEDURES 1. Greet the pupils Assalamualaikum Good Morning when they arrive at the preschool. 2. Tell the pupils to sit around the teacher. 3. Talk about the position of the sun in relation to greetings, Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and good night, with the pupils. 4. Take the pupils out of the classroom. 5. Draw the pupils attention to the position of the sun. 6. Talk about the changes from day to night in relation to their daily activities. 7. Show the relationship between the sun and the greetings. 8. Say Good Morning (the pupils greet each other) and shake hands. 9. Teacher recites a rhyme on greeting Hello with actions and the pupil follow.

PROCEDURES 1. The teacher shows a picture and the pupils name the object. 1. The teacher shows the word card and says the word. Pupils repeat after teacher. 2. The teacher emphasizes the sound of b for ball. Teacher draws the pupils attention to the movement of her lips when the sound is produced. 3. Pupils repeat the sound after the teacher. 4. The pupils place their palms in front of their mouth when they say the word b. They will feel their breath as they say the initial words. 5. Encourage the pupils to repeat words that begin with the initial letter b. Eg: bat, ball, book, bus. 6. This process can be repeated with other alphabets.

Pupils are then asked to pick a picture that matches with the letter.

PROCEDURES 1. Teacher introduces the story book to the pupils. 2. Teacher and pupils talk about the cover of the book. 3. Teacher reads the story and talks about the pictures. 4. Teacher asks simple questions ; eg; Why do you think Mimi and Anis go to the parade? Why are there a lot of people? 5. Children retell the stories by looking at the pictures with teachers guidance. Mimi and Anis at the Parade Today is 31st August. Today is our National Day. Mimi and Anis go to the Parade. Mimi and anis see a lot of people. Chinese boys, Indian girls, Malay boys and girls and not to forget Punjabi boys too. They are singing our National Anthem. Yes, I know! It is Negaraku. Look, they are marching! Soldiers marching, policeman marching and firemen too. What are they holding? Our National flag. Jalur Gemilang. Boom! Boom! It is so loud. Look! Colourful fireworks. Mimi and Anis are so happy. Mimi and Anis go home. Bye, bye See you again, next year.
