for the little people

(and BIG ones too!)
With an amazing natural environment, history and heritage and an array of attractions and activities that will keep you busy for hours on end the question is will there be enough time to fit everything into one holiday?

Play, learn and have fun!

Many of our attractions let you (and the big people!) learn and have fun; at Clearwell Caves you can meet a real live Freeminer and take an underground tour. There are nine caves, which remain at the same temperature whatever the weather outside. Delve deeper into the history and heritage of the Forest of Dean at Dean Heritage Centre, with galleries, library and 5 acres to explore. Experience the magic of steam and diesel trains, chat to the driver and spot the wildlife as you chug along! For something a little bit more energetic visit the Wye Valley Miniature Golf course in a Roman fantasy setting. Suitable for wheelchair users and has equipment available so even the smallest of you can play!

Hop, skip and

jump!

Ssshhhhh... indoor voices

Use your indoor voices and walk with butterflies fluttering all around you from different parts of the world at Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo. Or try the International Centre for Birds of Prey which is home to over 200 birds and you can get to see them fly!

Visit Beechenhurst Lodge where there is plenty of room to hop, skip and jump! There is even a wooden play area so you can really let off steam (dont worry there is somewhere to leave the big people!). Go and play hide and seek or tag in the aMazing Hedge Puzzle, who can reach the centre first? Indoor and outdoor playgrounds, fun with the animals and tractor rides are what Dick Whittington Farm Park is all about. Do something magical - head to Puzzlewood and see if you can find where Dr Who and Merlin were filmed. Lots of pathways and twisted trees to explore all leading towards the willow maze.

CALDICOT CASTLE & COUNTY PARK

ystery... its a m
Within this fascinating place of great contrasts, there are many ghostly stories, legends and myths
The last witch trial in Gloucestershire was held in the Forest in 1906. There are many strange happenings in pubs and haunted houses; stories of water sprites guarding pools and wells; tales of tormented souls of soldiers; big cat sightings, not to mention the ghostly presence of the rare white hart. It should be no surprise that the area is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the most haunted places in Great Britain! An area full of oddities and quirks: Sheep Badgers people who claim the right to turn out their sheep in the Forest to graze on open land or forest waste. Freeminers the title given to Foresters who earned the right to mine personal plots known as gales. Verderers liaise on behalf of the Crown between the local community and the Forestry Commission. Scowles A landscape feature from the remains of early opencast iron ore extraction; some great examples can be viewed at Puzzlewood. Iron and Steel In the 1800s in Coleford, David Mushet and his freeminer son Robert Forester Mushet pioneered techniques in iron and steel production.

Golden Years
Gold Miner, Kit Andrews gives an insight into relatively unknown world of gold mining in the Forest of Dean.
Lea Bailey Gold Mine was started around 1906 and became the talk of the town and England when the Chastan syndicate sold 75,000 1 shares to further the development of the gold mine. After test workings, it was concluded that gold and silver could not be extracted economically at the time and the syndicate was wound up in 1908. The Chastan Syndicate was formed by Charles Staniforth in 1906 to exploit the gold reserves under Euroclydon. It is not exactly known how much gold was found but the lawyers did well out of other people's financial ineptitude. The mine closed around 1910 after running out of funding. A few further applications were made to re-open the mine up until the early 1920s. The half dozen miners or so extracted the ore from either the quartz conglomerate or the yellow marl clay 400 yards deep within the mine. There is a ghostly story from 50 years ago of a miner, a giant of a man called big Phil, who pulled a miner to safety from a coal face in the Forest, as pit props, roof timbers and coal came crashing down around them both. Big Phil would appear in any mine from that day in times of impending danger, especially roof collapses to warn miners to get out before they were engulfed. on a sandstone cliff overlooking the river Wye with peaceful gardens and excellent riverside walks. The town itself has picturesque streets lined with independent shops and a traditional central market hall.

Monmouth in the heart of the Wye Valley is a Welsh border

market town with a bustling high street that is equally inviting in the evening with its great choice of pubs and restaurants. At the top of the town is The Shire Hall a magnificant Grade 1* listed building where visitors can step back in time to the famous Chartist Trials of 1840 in Courtroom 1 and visit the prisoners in the basement holding cells.

Coleford with its mainly Georgian

architecture differs in appearance to the other Forest towns and its centre has been designated a Conservation Area. It was in Coleford that Robert Mushet perfected the Bessemer process for making steel in 1856.

Chepstow is an historic walled

border town commanding the entrance to the Lower Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. On the towns outskirts, sitting up high on the banks of the Wye is the beautifully preserved Chepstow Castle that is proud to boast the oldest castle doors in Europe.

20

Newent is an attractive, unspoilt market town with

buildings dating back to the 13th century and a half timbered market house, all part of the town centre conservation area. Newent is also home to the world famous Onion Fayre and is the birthplace of Joe Meek the legendary 60s maverick record producer.

Cinderford developed as a town following the rapid

expansion of the iron and coal mining industries. The centre of town called the Triangle is home to the towns war memorial and a statue of a local Freeminer. Views from the observation tower are spectacular. Explore the town trail with six artworks that portray the past industrial and cultural activity in the town.

A Village Story...
The Forest of Dean is unique in the way its villages are scattered equally across the district. For many locals, past traditions are still in place and many of their Forest cottages still stand as they did in the mining era, carefully tended by their current owners. The quaint Forest roads take you along breathtakingly beautiful countryside through villages each with something special to offer and a story to tell. Lying on the bank of the river Severn, Minsterworth is a top viewing point for the Severn Bore Tidal Wave. Soudley is home to natural attractions of Blaize Bailey viewpoint and Soudley Ponds with surrounding paths suitable for the less able and wheelchair users. The pretty Wye Valley villages have lots of intriguing churches and village stores selling local wares. The most famous Wye Valley village attraction is Tintern with its Cistercian Abbey. Symonds Yat East and West are two of the most well-known and are focal points for walking and canoeing.

Lydney located on the bank of the

UKs longest river, the Severn, was once important for shipping timber, coal and iron through Lydney Docks, now a harbour for pleasure craft. Lydney railway station is located on the Gloucester to Newport line and brings visitors to a lively town with a good choice of shops and eateries.

March,

A Year in the Forest of Dean

June, July, August September, October, November
Natures own firework display of yellows, oranges, reds and golden leaves, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Gorge has one of the best natural colour spectacles in the UK. While youre out foraging for blackberries, sloes and fungus look out for redwings and fieldfares returning for winter. Join an expert Forestry Commission ranger on a Deer Safari. If youre lucky, glimpse the magnificent white bucks known as Forest White Ghosts.

April, May
The Forest of Dean is a nationally important site for thousands of fresh scented bluebells. Equally famous is the Golden Triangle of wild daffodils around Oxenhall, Kempley and Dymock - download the Daffodil Way walk from www.visitforestofdean.co.uk. A time to get out in the woods, enjoy the sounds of spring as the dawn chorus crescendos. Birds like pied flycatchers, redstarts, wood warblers and chiffchaffs return from Africa, to add their voices to those which tough out the British winter, like the robin, treecreepers and woodpeckers. The Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world, giving rise to the famous Severn Bore tidal wave around the spring and autumn equinox; Minsterworth is a top viewing point.

Stroll through 35 square miles of green tunnels of oak, beech and larch trees. Gaze at beautiful butterflies, the Forest of Dean is home to more than 30 species. Join the RSPB at the viewpoint on Symonds Yat Rock and hear about the amazing Peregrine falcons which can be seen nesting from here. Or visit the New Fancy viewpoint, one of the best places in the UK to view goshawks. Listen out for the croak of Raven overhead wherever you are in the forest Find Redstarts, tree pipits and other migrant birds feeding up before they start their journey back to Africa. Why not take part in a bat expedition? The Wye Valley is host to an internationally important population of lesser horseshoe bat.

December, January, February

Without its leafy canopy the Forest becomes light and airy. Frosty forest paths, frozen lakes and snow-capped trees create a stillness and solitude for a truly magical walking experience, it is a great time to look for Hawfinches, Crossbills and lesser spotted Woodpeckers.

Four exquisite barn conversions: your doorway to peace and adventure

FOREST BARN HOLIDAYS & RURAL RETREATS

VB ##### and VB ####

MAP REF: D3

Idyllic 17th century barns: a tranquil oasis within the forest, offering endless opportunities for family adventure and discovery - walking, cycling, vineyards, local food. Chic interiors draw you home to relax.

You have time and space to do nothing but count daisies and watch wheeling buzzards. Yet theres so much to do, you cant squeeze it into a single holiday. Come evening, youll be winding down in 21st century comfort. Too tired to cook? Why nor order our chef-prepared meals. Share yours in the cosy glow of your logburner, wearing the soft bathrobe and slippers we left for you, and no one will ever know.
Orchard Barn sleeps 6 In this three bedroom stone barn, youll be lord of all you survey. You have three bathrooms, a full height vaulted lounge, and a six acre meadow. The interior design makes the most of the beams and period features, whilst underfloor heating keeps family snug through the coldest nights. Meadow Byre sleeps 4 Only the rustic exterior hints that this two bedroom family barn had more humble beginnings. Inside its bright and airy with beams in the vaulted ceiling. They frame a generous, open plan living space that draws everyone together to swap stories or play board games around the cosy logburner.

The Stables sleeps 6 This stone barn welcomes you like an old friend. With three bedrooms and two bathrooms, theres room for the entire family, and more than enough space in your meadow for a game of rounders. Active cooks love the kitchen, bookworms prefer the deep sofas.
