CHAPTER -1 INTRODUCTION
The global garments and garment industry forms an important component of world trade flows particularly for some developing and least developed countries where clothing accounts for a large proportion of total exports. In 2004, world exports of garments were valued at $195bn and of clothing at total world merchandise trade (WTO, 2005). Developing countries produce half the worlds garments exports and nearly three-quarters of the worlds clothing export (UNCTAD, 2005). Trade patterns in garments are similar although garments tend to be a capital-intensive business, while garment making is labor intensive and usually relies on a low-cost workforce. For garments, the European Union is the biggest exporter (if including intra-EU trade), followed by China. However, India, Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico all rank among the top 15 garments exporters, according to WTO trade statistics. Overall, Asia accounted for 45.1% of world garments exports in 2004. The EU and the US are the biggest imports of garments, followed by China, which needs fabric for its large garments industry. For Clothing, the EU is again the biggest exporter (including intra-EU exports), followed by China with 2% share of world garment exports. Although all other countries lag far behind, Turkey, Mexico, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, , Vietnam, Tunisia and Pakistan all feature among the top 15 clothing exporters. Overall, Asia accounted for 46.8% of world clothing exports in 2004. The major importers of clothing are the EU and the US, with Japan trailing in third place. A distinctive feature of the clothing industry is the number of countries highly dependent on garment exports, even though the absolute value exports are not high the global terms. In 2004 clothing provided more than 40% of total merchandise exports for Cambodia, El Salvador, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and Lesotho. Such reliance on the garments industry for both jobs and export revenues makes these countries and their populations, very vulnerable to adverse shifts in trading patterns.

DISHA DESIGNS PVT LTD 1.1 The Global Garments and Garments Value Chain: The garments value chain falls into distinct segments: The production of raw materials (natural and man-made fibers), the manufacture of yarn and fabric, the making of clothing, and the retailing of the finished items. It is the labour intensive garment manufacturing stageusually greatest relevance to poverty alleviation countries that is the focus of this study. Other end-uses of fibers and garments, including household furnishings and various industrial products, are not considered here in detail. In the past, industrialization in garment a garments manufacture has been an important development route for a large number of economies, despite the distortion arising from the trade regime, as barriers to entry such as capital requirement and technical known-how were relatively low . The developmental role of the industry was all the more impotents as small and medium enterprise could readily succeed, and as the industry has always employed a high proportion of women. India Garments industry: The garments industry in India is one of the best in the world. In extremely well organized sector, garments manufacturer, exporters, suppliers, stockiest and wholesalers are the gateway clothing any extremely enterprising apparel industry in India. There are numerous garments exporters, garments manufacturer; readymade garments exporters etc. both in the small scale as well as large scale. Until the economic liberalization of Indian economy, the Indian garments industry was predominantly unorganized industry. The opening up of Indian economy post 1990s led to a stupendous growth of this industry. Indian garments industry is one of the largest garments industries in the world. Today, Indian economy is largely dependent on garment manufacturing and exports. India earns around 27% of the foreign exchange from exports of garments. Further, India garments industry contributes about 14% of the total industrial production of India. Furthermore, its contribution to the gross domestic product of the India is around 3% and the numbers are

DISHA DESIGNS PVT LTD steadily increasing Indian garments industry involves around 35million workers directly and account for 21% of the total employment generated in the economy. The minister of the garments under the government of India has taken some significant steps to arrest these problems. It has framed the national garment policy to address

aforesaid issues. This policy aims it negating these problems and increasing the foreign exchange earnings the tune of US$ 50 billion by the year 2011. It includes rational road maps for the development promotion of all the sectors involved directly or indirectly with the garments industry of India. Further, the policy also envisages bringing the unorganized decentralized garments sector (which accounts for 76% of garments production) at par with the organized mill sector. Furthermore, the policy also aims at introducing modern and efficient manufacturing machineries and techniques in the Indian garments sector. 1.2 Objectives of the study: The study is based on the following objectives: 1. CHAPTER -2 INDUSTRY PROFILE

The Indian textile industry is very large; this sector has its roots going back several thousand years. After the industrial revolution in Europe, this sector in India also saw growth of an industrial complex. However, over the last 50 years the textile industry in India has shown a chequered performance. Today the industry contributes around 14% to industrial production in the country, is estimated to directly employ approximately 35 million people apart from the indirect employment in allied sectors, accounts for a about 27% to the country's exports, and is, in sum, an important economic engine for the nation. In part, the very diversity, scale and spread of the industry which has been its strength, has also been its weakness. Like the "six blind men exploring the elephant" most people's experiences and actions have included only part of the industry, rather than its completeness. Thus, even government regulations and financial policies have never been able to adequately fulfill the widely varied needs of the different segments of the industry. However, during the last 10 years, the industry's actions, government policies as well as market events have begun to converge, providing several growth opportunities for the sector domestically as well as in the global market. 2.1 VERTICAL CHAIN AND VARIETY OF PRODUCTS: Fabrics have been a traditional area of strength not just through millennia-old traditions of weaving, but through a series of industrialization moves beginning in the late 1800s. The Indian weaving and knitting base today includes products as diverse as fine dress fabrics, shirting, worsted suiting, denim, fleece, jersey, flat / woolen knits, technical fabrics etc. Much of this diversification of fabric product base has occurred in the last 10-20 years as domestic consumption patterns have changed as well. In apparel, far beyond the embroidered, beaded or sequined dresses in womens wear and bleeding madras shirts in menswear that so typified India's image in the past, India produces

Community Institute Of Management Studies

Page 5

DISHA DESIGNS PVT LTD active sportswear, weatherproof outerwear, foundation garments, suits, socks, infant wear and a whole host of other products for all ages. Production of made-ups includes a wide variety of bed, bath and table linen, kitchen accessories, etc. 2.2 COMPETITIVE CAPABILITIES: Certainly, an abundant low cost base of labour has been one of Indian industry's advantages. Various studies by consulting firms such as Kurt Salmon Associates, Werner, Gherzi Textile Organization as well as other bodies have highlighted India's cost advantage, as well as the long-term sustainability of this advantage. What is more important is that, among this abundant workforce, the fabric or garmentmaking skill is very high as entire communities have participated in the trade and sustained and refined workmanship. In fact, workers in the Indian industry are often referred to as "kaarigar" (artisan or craftsman), even though recent trends of increasingly automated equipment have emphasized deskilling of the worker into an "operator". It is this existing base of needlecraft that has enabled the Indian industry to retain its position as one of the key suppliers of apparel and textiles, and also add new products to its portfolio by rapidly learning the techniques. In addition to this, Indian industry has consistently remained flexible in terms of production quantity and lead time. While typical production runs are governed by fabric colour minimums, India presents the possibility of producing quantities as low as to a few hundred pieces. This capability is especially critical in an unpredictable market where retailers and brands are looking to source ever-smaller quantities of product, increasingly closer to the season. During recent years there has been qualitative improvement in management assets as well. This is especially critical - as retailers and brands consolidate their businesses, they expect their suppliers to become more sophisticated and take on more roles that were previously done by the customer.

Community Institute Of Management Studies

Page 6

DISHA DESIGNS PVT LTD 2.3 INDIA AS A REGIONAL SOURCING HUB: India is being seen by more and more customers as a hub, rather than a stand-alone sourcing opportunity. Standing alone, India exports about US$ 13 billion of textile and apparel products, and this figure is slated to grow to over US$ 20 billion by 2005-06. However, even more interesting is India's position as a regional hub, including sourcing from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal. In apparel alone, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka already export around US$ 12 billion to global markets, and are growing further. Already companies such as H&M and Karstadt-Quelle manage their sourcing from these three countries together, with the regional headquarters based in New Delhi. Gap has taken it further, including its Middle East sourcing within this umbrella. Many others are following suit. The reasons for this are many and varied, including the fact that many companies in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the Middle East (and even as far as South East Asia - including Indonesia and Thailand) actually employ Indian professionals in various management positions. Other than that, business and cultural linkages have existed in the past and provide a platform for regional business cooperation. Certainly, India's size as a potential market is an important factor in its role as a hub, and many of these companies are looking to grow their sourcing base in and around India as a precursor to selling within the Indian market.

Opportunities:
The western countries are now setting up their manufacturing units in India which single handedly opens up a wide array of possibilities for all the stakeholders within the textile industry. Experts believe that the golden era of Chinese textile and apparel exports is over and the production base of global textiles is gradually shifting from China to India, Pakistan and other low cost destinations.

Threats:
Even though experts claim that China is past its glorious days, still one cannot afford to take china lightly and has to keep in mind the capability of Chinese exporters to supply quality products at cheap prices. Indian textile exporters cannot afford complacency and need to be on their toes for any changes within the international trade community.

CONCLUSION
DISHA DESIGNS PRIVATE LIMITED is well established & developing organization in India. Organization is more concerned about its employees & environment friendly policies. DDPL strictly follows the rules and regulations of the concerned Act. The infrastructure used in the organization, ethical values maintained by DDPL towards their long standing customers, working style of the organization, etc is good. All the sub departments of processing department like bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing are working under laboratory instructions, so laboratory is playing a role of executive in quality control. All the schedules of bleaching, dyeing printing and finishing are prepared by the laboratory instead of related management or HR department. There is lack of human resource planning, lack of recruiting activities, lack of job analysis, compensation and reward system is not very much attractive and employees are not well motivated in DISHA DESIGNS PRIVATE LIMITED. One good thing of this department is that, the department will let the employees follow the rules and regulations set by the organization strictly. Attendance is strictly checked. Low attention is paid to this department by upper level management. The textile industry in India has gone through significant charges in anticipation of increased international competition. The industry is facing numerous problems and among them the most important once are those of liquidity for many organized sector units, demand recession and insufficient price realization. The long-range problems include the need for sufficient modernization and restructuring of the entire industry to cater more effectively to the demands of the domestic and foreign markets for textiles as per the needs of today and tomorrow.

LEARNING EXPERIENCE

It was great experience that I got at DISHA DESIGNS Fashion Limited, Where I learnt many things about the functioning of the company in accordance with the present market trends. I being the student of MBA was learning only theoretical aspects, but I was not exposed to working environment. I came to know how theories are used to solve many problems, how management maintains relationship with workers and how they handle grievances. I came to know how to interact with the people of the organization. This helped in developing my knowledge. IED Manager, Mr.Niranjan and HR Manager, Ahila Kandaswamy, were very much cooperative in providing the information like the company reports and documents and other requirements for my project. The organizational study helped us to relate our theoretical knowledge with the practical scenario in the organization. It also helped to know how an effective strive, the organization makes to satisfy their valuable customers. The organization study helped to understand the organization principles, objectives and goals which the organization had applied. Though my period of stay was limited, I learned lots of things during my stay. The people

in the company were very co-operative and encouraged me by giving valuable information of the functioning department, which helped me to complete my project.
