Dear Managing Partner:

Re: 3RD ANNUAL STATEWIDE LEGAL FOOD FRENZY

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO YOUR PROGRAM COORDINATOR

I am proud to say that last year’s 2nd Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy was a record setting
success, raising 1,366,401 pounds of food in cash and food donations for Virginia’s food banks,
more than doubling the amount raised during the 2007 inaugural event. Former Attorney General
Bob McDonnell and the Virginia Bar Association would like to challenge the legal community in
southwestern Virginia and across the Commonwealth to raise the bar again this year for the hungry
children, elderly and working poor. The 3rd Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy, benefiting the
Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks, will
take place from March 30 through April 10, 2009. Our goal is to get every law firm and legal office
in the Commonwealth to participate in this event! In order to reach this goal, obviously we will need
your help. Therefore, we ask that you participate in this year’s event.

In 2008 the 28 participating law firms in southwestern Virginia collected $14,607.24 and 2,338
pounds of food for the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank. That was nearly double
what was collected the previous year! With the Food Bank’s ability to provide $6.00 of food for every
$1.00 donated you can see that the donations received in 2008 had a long and lasting impact on the
hungry in our region. What an exciting three weeks it was for the SWVA Second Harvest Food Bank
as law firms in this region poured out their hearts for the hungry. When all was said and done, the
participating firms in 2008 provided more than 59,000 meals for the hungry men, women and children
struggling throughout the Food Bank’s 26 county service territory. Last year the Food Bank
distributed more than 11.3 million pounds of food through a network of 350 partner agency feeding
programs, serving approximately 100,000 individuals every month, but the Food Bank cannot do it
without the help of community supporters like your Law Firm.

Please register for this year’s Legal Food Frenzy and join us for a Kick-Off Luncheon that will
be held on March 25th at the Food Bank, 1025 Electric Road, Salem, VA 24153.

Please let us know by Friday, March 13, 2009, if you will be participating in the 3rd Annual
Statewide Legal Food Frenzy by either faxing the enclosed registration form or by emailing the
information on the form to Emily Minter, local Food Bank coordinator, at
eminter@swvafoodbank.org. Emily can also be reached by telephone at (540) 342-3011 ext. 28.

We challenge YOU to join your colleagues in this humanitarian effort and make the 3rd Annual
Statewide Legal Food Frenzy even more successful than last year’s event!

Sincerely, Sincerely,

Tara Branscomb, Co-Chair Lori Thompson, Co-Chair

RULES
The following explains the rules for counting non-perishable food and case contributions to the Legal Food Frenzy for
the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank
The contest runs from March 30 – April 10, 2009. You may not count any money or food collected after April
11th. All food and funds must be received by 4:30 April 17th.
Each dollar contributed will count as four pounds of food.
Checks should be made payable to: SWVA Second Harvest Food Bank
Contributions of money are tax-deductible and are very welcome. Please note, if you are contributing cash,
please include a receipt with the contributors name, address and amount of donation.
You may donate online by going to our website, www.swvafoodbank.org and click the “donate now” button.
When entering your gift, you must include the law firm name and reference Legal Food Frenzy in the
“designation.”
Food items will be weighed at the Food Bank and the results tabulated in pounds.
Candy will not be counted.
When counting the number of employees, count each person working at the firm, regardless of position.
Please do not contribute food items in glass containers – they have a high risk of breakage.
Please do not open items that are already packed in cases, cartons, or boxes. This will make it easier for the
Food Bank to pick up.
It is very important that you tell the Food Bank the approximate amount of food you have collected in order for
our transportation department to prepare properly.
If your firm only has a monetary contribution, this needs to be communicated at the time your pick-up date is
assigned so the Food Bank is aware of what form of vehicle to send to your firm.
All food and fund donations must be turned into the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank in order
to be counted towards the competition.
If a firm delivers all food and monetary contributions to the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest
Food Bank at 1025 Electric Rd., Salem, VA 24154 your firm will receive a 25% bonus of tabulated
pounds!
Law firms with multiple office locations will compete as a single entity for Attorney General awards.
Fill out the pick-up information form by April 10th, and return by fax to Emily Minter, at (540) 342-0056

THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!

Ideas for Your Food Frenzy

 Dress Down Day- If you donate a certain amount you may wear casual attire.

 Potluck Day- Everyone brings a dish for lunch and in order to gain entrance you must pay an
admission fee.

 Costume Theme Day- Create a theme, for example, “Mardi Gras” or “St. Patrick’s Day
Parade”. If you bring in a certain cash amount you may dress for that theme.

 Food Theme Day- Challenge co-workers to bring in as many different food items as possible
in a certain category. For example, food geared towards people with diabetes, or food for
children in a particular age group. Whoever has the most different types of food within the
category wins a prize.

 Lunch for the Hungry Day- Everyone contributes what they would normally spend on lunch.

 Cookout- Last year a Roanoke Valley firm raised a large chunk of change with a cookout for
all employees. The firm provided the burgers, dogs, and buns; the staff each brought a dish;
and everyone paid a fee to get in!

 Prize- Have a prize for all employees who participate if your company wins their category or
overall event.

 Totals- Display daily totals in high-traffic areas or announce totals using emails to keep people
up to date and involved.

 Friendly Competition- Conduct non-monetary waging and/or email wars between law firms
and/or firm sections.

 Rewards- Have rewards for staff members who donate more than $100.
