Assign your product to the correct corrosion class

Corrosion classes help determine the requirements for pre-treatment:

Corrosion class 0 Indoors with relative humidity under 60% Very low corrosion risk (aggressivity) Corrosion class 1 Indoors in non-heated, well ventilated room Low corrosion risk Corrosion class 2 Indoors with fluctuating temperature and humidity. Outdoors in inland climate, far from sea and industry. Medium corrosion risk Corrosion class 3 In densely populated areas or near industrial areas. In the vicinity of open water and near the coast High corrosion risk Corrosion class 4 Constant, high humidity. Near industry manufacturing or utilising chemicals Very high corrosion risk Based on metal type and knowledge of corrosion class for the product, the following tables will suggest pre-treatment options.

Pre-treatment of galvanised steel

C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning* Iron phosphate treatment Zinc phosphate treatment Chromate treatment *Sandblasting is only suitable when the zinc layer is thick. Light sandblasting.

Pre-treatment of iron and steel

C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning** Iron phosphate treatment Zinc phosphate treatment Chromate treatment ** For higher corrosion classes only when powder is coated onto preheated goods high film thickness.

Pre-treatment of aluminium
C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning Iron phosphate treatment Zinc phosphate treatment Chromate treatment NB! For surface treatment of aluminium for facades, doors, windows, etc., see separate brochure

Pre-treatment of magnesium
C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning Iron phosphate treatment Zinc phosphate treatment Chromate treatment

Pre-treatment of copper and brass

C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning Iron phosphate treatment Zinc phosphate treatment Chromate treatment

Pre-treatment of aluzinc
C O R R O S I O N Treatment type C L A S S

Cleaning/degreasing Blast cleaning Iron phosphate treatment* Zinc phosphate treatment* Chromate treatment *For iron and zinc phosphate treatments, passivation in weak chromic acid solution should be used. NB! Alu-Zinc and galvanized materials are often delivered with protective chromate from the factory. Such chromate may create difficulties for subsequent surface treatment. We recommend that the supplier be consulted as to whether his chromate layer is suitable for powder coating, or whether it should be removed/omitted.
