Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What are E-Books on Demand? A1: E-Books On Demand is a desktop application that enables easy downloading of secure PDFs. This tool gives you the ability to download Symantec product technical training content to study at your convenience. Previously only available in a Symantec customer training environment, Symantec University for Partners now offers partners no-cost access to valuable training content to assist in increasing your technical knowledge of Symantec products. Q2: What is an E-Book? A2: An E-Book file is a proprietary encapsulation of a .pdf file, created through licensed software. It carries a .pdc file extension (hereafter the terms "E-Book", "Secure PDF", and "PDC" should be considered synonymous). The E-Book is a secure version of a participant guide for a training course, a slide deck, or other document requiring secure rights management. Q3: What is available for download with the E-Books On Demand tool? A3: E-Books contain Symantec product training and lab guides covering topics such as: Installation and Deployment, Configuration Assets and Policies, Event and System Management, Server & Database Management. There are over a hundred courses and more than 280 documents available. Q4: How do I request access to E-Books On Demand tool? A4: Please visit the Intelligence Page in the Training section of PartnerNet for instructions on how to request access to the E-Books On Demand tool. Q5: How do I access E-Books? A5: After requesting access, you will receive an email from Symantec Education E-Books within 3-4 days with the subject line Secure E-books have been requested on your behalf. The email explains how to install the viewer application and how to register your license. After completing these tasks, you will be able to open the PDC file. Q6: What are the system requirements? A6: The tool runs on Windows only (XP and Vista) and requires a live Internet connection to download content. There are no other unusual requirements. Frequently Asked Questions

Q7: How do I Install E-Books On Demand? A7: Download the zip file to your local drive. NOTE: Save to diskdo not open over the Internet. After saving the content to disk, extract the .exe file. Launch the tool by double clicking the application icon, and approve any firewall warning as needed ('Allow Always' or equivalent is recommended). There is no further installation required. Q8: What content is not served? A8: The only content served under this initiative is Symantec training and lab guides. Note: Not all partner training will be made available via this delivery type. No lab images, scripts, instructor readiness material or e-learning are available. For a comprehensive list of training available view the training path for each respective product. Q9: How do I open a PDC? A9: The first time you request content, you will receive an email with the subject line LockLizard Safeguard Secure PDF Viewer Registration. The email explains how to install the viewer application, and how to register your license. After completing those two tasks, you will be able to open the PDC file. Q10: Can I give my license to somebody else? A10: No, once you have initialized an individual license, it cannot be used on another computer. If you need to open the PDC on more than one computer (home and work, for example), you will be able to do so, as all new accounts are being granted two licenses by default to accommodate this need. Q11: Do I have to be connected to the Internet to read a PDC? A11: You may need to be connected the first time you open a specific PDC file. In other situations, you generally will not need to have Internet connectivity. Any other restrictions will be described in the original email that specifies the location of the content. Q12: Can I print an E-Book? A12: Yes, however, printouts will have a personalized watermark that prints diagonally across the page. Q13: Can I print it to a virtual or multi-function printer? A13: No. For example, you cannot print to an Acrobat PDF driver or a fax-capable printer driver. This restriction protects the PDC from being "re-used" in insecure document formats. Q14: Can I give the PDC file to a vendor for mass printing? A14: No, not unless you connect to their network and print directly from your computer. Remember also that your name will appear in the watermark for all copies made from your computer. Q15: Can I copy text from the PDC? A15: No. If you are a partner training organization or localizer who needs to leverage content, you must go through Symantec channels to obtain un-encrypted source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q16: I have a PDC of a slide presentation. Does it work like PowerPoint? A16: You can set the PDC to be full-screen, you can project it, and you can advance slide to slide similar to PowerPoint. However, PowerPoint animations will not function and any linking from PowerPoint (for example, to Flash demos) will have to be done manually in Windows. Q17: When I try to open the PDC, I am told that it has expired. Why? A17: In some cases, certain PDCs will be set to expire after a certain time period or after a certain number of viewings. Any such limitation will be explained up front when you are told the location of content. Q18: When I try to open the PDC, I get the error "Please close your screen capture application". A18: In some cases, you will have to close screen capture applications (or applications that have similar functionality) before opening PDCs. This is a measure against improper screen shot copying of content.
