Explosion protection and prevention in mining

Equipment Equipment means machines, apparatus, fixed or mobile devices, control components and instrumentation thereof and detection or prevention systems which, separately or jointly, are intended for the generation, transfer, storage, measurement, control and conversion of energy for the processing of material and which are capable of causing an explosion through their own potential sources of ignition. Protective systems Protective systems means design units which are intended to halt incipient explosions immediately and/or to limit the effective range of explosion flames and explosion pressures. Protective systems may be integrated into equipment or separately placed on the market for use as autonomous systems. Components Components means any item essential to the safe functioning of equipment and protective systems but with no autonomous function.

Explosion barriers
Rock-dust explosion barriers are useful against coaldust explosions and are not used in German coal mines any more Water explosion barriers are useful against coal dust and methane explosions Water explosion barriers are constructed as -concentrated barrier (200 l/m roadway cross-section) in main roadways every 400 m -distributed barrier in gate roadways (1 l/m roadway-volume) equally distributed over the length of roadway

ISO/IEC 80079-xx (EN 1710) Equipment and components intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in underground mines
Main Characteristics of the Standard All types of equipment to be used in underground mines with explosive atmospheres have to comply with this standard Requirements for both explosion protection and fire protection (as far as fire can be an ignition source) Requirements for both non-electric and electric equipment (as far as they are not dealt with in other standards) Ignition hazard assessment has to be carried out for the whole machine including interconnections, such as cables or electrical supply system Ignition data has been examined, as a basis for the equipment included in the standard

EN 1710 Equipment and components intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in underground mines
Scope Requirements for the construction and marking of equipment that may be an individual item or form an assembly. This includes machinery and components placed on the market by a single supplier for use in mines endangered by firedamp and/or combustible dust. Prevention of ignitions of explosive atmospheres caused by burning (or smouldering) of combustible material used in the construction of the equipment if such items could be an ignition source.

4 Requirements for equipment (machines) and components

4.1 General
Ignition hazard assessment according to EN 13463-1 (non-electrical) and IEC 60079-0 (electrical)

All electrical and non- electrical equipment and components for use in a potentially atmosphere shall be designed and constructed to good engineering practice and in confirmity with requirements of group I category M2 equipment to ensure avoidance of any ignition source

4 Requirements for equipment (machines) and components
restrict the maximum surface temperature meet the electrostatic requirements restrict the use of exposed light metals perform tests on non-metallic parts on which the ignition protection depends to ensure they will not deteriorate in the conditions of use in mines and cause the protection to be lost
