SUBJECT OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course you should ask yourself if:

I You are capable of modelling and designing complex systems using State Space Techniques (Modern Control Theory) I You are capable of implementing those designs in real life (by using computers, microprocessors, electronic circuits, etc).

ADVANCED CONTROL TECHNIQUES

INTRODUCTION TO MODERN CONTROL TECHNIQUES
Disadvantages of traditional control methods: I Traditional control methods are based on the Laplace or Fourier Transform. These methods are used to solve Single Input Single Output (SISO) problems in the frequency domain (Root Locus (Lugar de las Races), Bode, Nyquist, Nichols diagrams). Moreover, the most powerful of these methods (the Root Locus) can only be used to design at most two dominant poles of a system. Therefore, traditional methods are not adequate in the following situations: - Multiple Inputs and Multiple Outputs (MIMO). For example, aircraft autopilots. - When more than two poles need to be designed. SOLUTION: New control methods based on time domain techniques. The control of most complex industrial systems is carried out using State Space Control Techniques: autopilots, paper mills, chemical processes, etc,

ADVANCED CONTROL TECHNIQUES Laboratory:

There is one course project involving CAD design that should be done during the term If possible, there will be an experimental verification of the theory using a PLC to control a second order plant. Reports of lab experiments should be handed in to me one week after the end of the term. Failure to meet the deadline will mean reduced marks. Final marks will depend on both the exam and the lab experiments.
