In the field of micro-machining, TRUMPF will be detailing the results of its applications research efforts. This will be in a presentation to be held during the course of the Photonics West SPIE Conference. Among the procedures examined were processing glass and other hard and brittle materials using TruMicro 5270, a green picosecond laser. These lasers are perfect for machining glass, ceramics and synthetic sapphire. The laser pulses are shorter than ten picoseconds in length and will vaporize material before heat can be transferred to the surrounding material. This avoids microfissures caused by stress in the material. TRUMPF will also be reviewing the findings of the process simulation project carried out jointly with the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen. Also to be seen at the TRUMPF booth will be the TruMicro 7050. This time-tested nanosecond laser is ideal for ablating layers over large surface areas. Its green light version, with 300 watts of output power, is used in many areas associated with solar panel manufacturing. The newest application for the infrared wavelength is eroding aluminum-silicon layers in preparation for welding in vehicle construction.
