Classroom Arrangement & Management Issues I will provide all materials. Classroom set up will remain in normal set up As always, students will have their Habits Of Work and Learning (HOWL) rubrics with them. Here, both positive and negative feedback is recorded in these throughout the day (ex: if a student shows great participation OR if a student is off task/needs multiple re-directives)

Plan (50 minutes) Hook and Photo Activity (15 minutes) I will begin by explaining that we are going to learn about the group that Delphines mother Cecile belongs to in our read aloud book, One Crazy Summer. I will then pass out post-it notes to each student and ask them to write down what they thought of Ceciles character when they found out about her involvement in Black Panther Party. I will then ask the students to put the sticky notes on the first poster board titled Cecile. Then I will show then the selected photos. One group will portray the group in a militant manner and the other in a peaceful, community serving manner. I will again ask that they fill in sticky notes with what how the photos make the students feel or what words come to mind. Shared Reading (15 minutes)

I will then distribute the print outs of the history of the Black Panthers parts 1 & 2 and read aloud as the students follow along, pausing at certain points for discussion (discussion points TBD waiting for the materials). Independent Reading (15 minutes) I will then ask the students to read the short Serve the People hand out and complete the facts and feelings worksheet. Closing (5 minutes) I will close the lesson by letting the students know that we will return to our posters once we have read more about how the black panthers were portrayed in the 50s and 60s (Cointelpro reading in future lesson) and once we have completed our One Crazy Summer read aloud. Assessment of Goals/Objectives Listed Above Students will be assessed during the post-it activities and the discussion during the shared reading Students will also be assessed based on the Facts & Feelings handout

Accommodations Students reading levels will be accommodated for as I will lead one part of the reading I may need to pull a group to share read the second part (the Serve the People reading), rather than independently read.
