Travelling by Train Top 5 reasons to travel by train

1. No tedious transfers - trains go straight to city centres 2. No long check-ins 3. Comfortable seats with ample legroom 4. No extra charges for baggage or flight duty 5. Travel with a clear conscience its greener to go by train

Your high speed link into Europe

the smart way to Europe

Travel by rail and you avoid airport check-ins, restrictive luggage allowances, cramped seats, long transfers and out-of-town airports. No-frills flights may sound tempting, but consider the reality...it's not much fun. High speed trains take you comfortably from city to city in modern, spacious carriages with as much luggage as you can carry.

the way forward

Europe is criss-crossed by a network of train routes, many of them high speed. European trains are comfortable, punctual and reliable. When you travel by rail, you decide the route and the services you want to use (high speed, overnight, local) as well as the places you want to stop along the way. If you've got some time to spare, drop your bags off in Paris or Brussels and spend a bit of time exploring before making your onwards connection. Forget airline schedules, expensive airport car parks, fuel surcharges and baggage fees. Travel by rail and you can go where you like, when you want and with as much luggage as you please. Its the way forward - youll wonder why you ever went another way!

how will you go?

There are several different types of train serving routes on the Continent and these vary in speed and comfort. High speed trains Serve major towns and cities at speeds of up to 200mph (322kph). Travel long distances quickly, with high levels of comfort and service. High speed trains include: Eurostar, TGV, AVE, Thalys, ICE, Italo, Frecciarossa and more. Overnight trains Cover huge distances while you sleep in comfort. Wake up at your destination having saved on a nights hotel stay too! Overnight trains include: Hotel Trains (Elipsos Trenhotel and CityNightLine), Night Trains (Intercits de nuit, Thello and more) Local trains Connect larger centres with smaller, more remote towns, in the same area. These come in several varieties and theres sometimes only standard class seating. Car carriers Take your car to your destination for you, so that you dont have to drive the whole way. AutoTrain, the car carrying service, allows you to drop off your vehicle in Paris and meet it in the South of France.

ticket types
There are a number of different ways to receive your tickets when you book your train travel with Rail Europe. We can send them to you in the post, or on certain routes we can email them for you to print at home or collect at the station. Postal tickets We will send them to you in the post as soon as we have completed your booking. eTickets (Print at home) On selected routes you have the option to print your own tickets at home. Once you have completed your booking you will receive confirmation by email of your itinerary and you can download and print your ticket(s). Tickets on Departure (TOD) If you have chosen to collect your ticket at the station you will need to print and collect your ticket(s) from one of the self-service machines before you board the train. Eurostar TOD tickets can be printed from the self-service machines found in any Eurostar terminal. French rail (SNCF) TOD tickets can be printed from any of 1,400 self-service machines in stations across the French network.

go green
Travel by rail and arrive with a clearer conscience. Did you know that the train is by far and away the greenest way to travel? Trains only produce 10-20% of the carbon emissions of a plane (per passenger). That means, as an individual, you can make a positive impact by your choice of transport method. We asked sustainability consultants Best Foot Forward to calculate the carbon impacts of travelling from London to one popular French city by train, car and plane. The figures shown here are pretty startling. Travel from London to Avignon 15.21 112.56 101.08
Carbon emissions per passenger (KgCO2e) Assuming 2 passengers per car Published April 2012

Lille
Leave after breakfast, arrive in time for lunch. Lille may be just 1 hour 20 minutes from the centre of London, but it is quintessentially French. The cobbled streets, wide squares, strong renaissance architecture and elegant facades exude a heavy Gallic charm, while the restaurants, museums, art galleries and one of Europes largest shopping centres put all those essential French treats firmly within reach. Lille has a strong Flemish influence too, and nowhere is this better felt than in the Place General de Gaulle or Grand Place. The citys main square is flanked by impressive Flemish buildings and is a great place to relax, soak up the sun and watch the world go by. Journey: London St Pancras to Lille Journey time: 1 hour 20 mins Return fare: 69 More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/lille

The Cathedral of Notre Dame is one of the most beautiful buildings from the Middle Ages in Europe. This is where most French kings were crowned for almost a thousand years, lending the city its other name; City of Coronations. Early summer is a wonderful time to visit Lyon, particularly during the Nuits de Fourvire. France by AutoTrain

how AutoTrain works

Want to experience the thrill of a Continental road trip whilst avoiding that gruelling drive from the UK? With AutoTrain, drop your car off in Paris and pick it up at your destination in the south of France - saving you the hassle of driving the whole, exhausting way. Its simple: 1. First, you take your car across the Channel. 2. Once on the Continent its about a 3-hour drive from Calais to the AutoTrain terminal at Paris Bercy station, in the south east of the capital. 3. Leave your vehicle at the station, where it is then loaded onto the AutoTrain and transported from Paris to southern France. Your vehicle and its luggage travel overnight on a special double-decker train. 4. Meanwhile, you make your own way to the destination on a separate daytime or overnight train avoiding the traffic jams, the road tolls and the stress. 5. Simply pick up your car at the other end and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

fancy a road trip in France?

Imagine holidaying in the South of France with your car, going where you please and filling your time - and your boot - with whatever takes your fancy. AutoTrain allows you to do just that, giving you all the pleasure of a grand tour but without the exhausting drive through France at either end of your holiday.

Bordeaux
Bordeaux in the sunshine is a sight to be seen with its breathtaking classical and neo classical architecture. It boasts no less than 350 classified and listed Historic Monument buildings including three World Heritage churches. The entire historic centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, which describes it as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble. People dont just visit to admire the architecture - Bordeaux is the capital of the world wine industry. Driving round this beautiful part of France, stopping off at the odd vineyard to try, and buy, makes for a perfect summer holiday. Biarritz
Biarritz may be one of the most uber-cool destinations in France but its a cultural force to be reckoned with too. So, as you collect your car from the AutoTrain, your dilemma will be what to do first! You could go straight to the beach: six whole kilometres of glorious golden sand sloping down to the Atlantic, which rolls in with a force that has made Biarritz the surfing capital of Europe. Alternatively, head out of town into Basque Country or drive just a little further and cross the border into Spain. You could even visit the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and stop for tapas in San Sebastian as you head back into France. Nice
Nice, Cannes, Monaco a driving holiday on the French Riviera puts all these evocative and supremely stylish locations firmly on your summer itinerary. Pick up your car from the AutoTrain in Nice, capital of the Cote dAzur, and then set off on the ultimate scenic drive. The road hugs the coast much of the way and the views are stunning: mountains soaring skyward on one side and the great blue expanse of the Mediterranean on the other. These coastal routes can be busy in high summer but you can always steer off the beaten track and find a place to just soak up some atmosphere and drink in the views. Toulon
Toulon basks in the southeast of Provence, making it the ideal starting point for a driving holiday in this famously beautiful part of France. Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence and Saint Tropez are all within a couple of hours drive, but dont forget to venture out into the countryside to explore the ancient Provencal villages that pepper the region. Many visitors take the cable car to the summit of MontFaron Hill, for birds-eye views of the town, coast and hinterland. The views from the cable car are impressive, but you can drive up there and the road is impressive too! Summer is a lively time, particularly in July, when Toulon hosts an annual jazz festival and stages free concerts all over town. Your car: Paris to Toulon on AutoTrain Return fare: from 182 Your Journey: High speed TGV from Paris to Toulon Journey time: 3 hours 55 mins Return fare: from 46 More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/toulon

Toulouse
If you love French cuisine, youll adore Toulouse. Known as the Ville Rose for the way sunlight reflects off the brickwork, this is one of South West Frances most important gastronomic regions, producing; wine, foie gras, cheese and of course cassoulet the Toulousain dish par excellence. The city lies in the heart of the Midi-Pyrenees, half way between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, so arriving here with your car puts this corner of France within your reach. This is a little visited part of France, but the landscapes are unspoilt and you can reach cities such as medieval Carcassone, beautiful Bordeaux or even the Spanish border in just a couple of hours. At the Uffizi Gallery you can see work such as Botticellis The Birth of Venus and da Vincis The Adoration of the Magi, while The Accademia Gallery houses Michelangelos masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, David. Amalfi
Magnificent Amalfi lies at the foot of Monte Cerreto, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and facing the wide blue Mediterranean. Its a quintessentially Italian town of alleys, steps, squares and white houses and the focal attraction on Italys famed Amalfi Coast. This is a great base from which to explore this iconic coastline, as well as the other well-known towns along its shore such as Positano and Ravello. Two summer festivals attract lots of visitors to Amalfi each year: the Feast Days of Saint Andrew (25-27 June) and the Byzantine New Years Eve (31 August) when carnivals, parties, parades and fireworks take over the town. Venlo
Floriade is an international festival of flowers and gardening held every 10 years in the Netherlands. Its a huge event, this year taking place in Venlo between 5 April 7 October, and a must-do in the diary of gardeners, garden lovers and horticulturalists around the world. But its not only about gardening: Floriade is a dazzlingly colourful event covering 66 hectares with five themed areas entitled Environment, Green Engine, Relax & Heal, Education & Innovation and World Show Stage. Also on offer is the biggest cable car ride in the country, and there will be daily displays of dance, song, acrobatics and a spectacular light show at night. Journey: London to Brussels, high speed Thalys to Rotterdam, then a local train to Venlo Journey time: 6 hours 10 mins Return fare: from 161

Berlin
Two decades ago Berlin was a darkly entrenched communist city, but today its a vividly colourful place that really comes alive in the summer. Its open-air movie theatres, fabulous festivals, shady beer gardens and 600-acre Tiergarten Berlin (the park at the heart of the city), bring tourists and locals alike out to play, while its world class restaurants, vibrant creative scene and hip nightlife keep the city alive long after dark. Theres even a string of man-made beaches along the banks of the Spree the river that snakes through the city centre - where you can top up that tan. Journey: London to Brussels, then overnight CityNightLine to Berlin or high speed Thalys to Cologne then a local train to Berlin (by day) Journey time: 11 hours 25 mins by day, 14 hours 40 mins overnight Return fare: from 318 by day, 159 by night More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/berlin

Ghent
Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp these are Belgiums big three but there are other, less crowded destinations that are well worth seeking out. Ghents quaint cobbled streets and genteel canals are lined with fine Flemish architecture and if you visit between the 12th of May and 16th of September, you might be surprised to find art and installations dotted around the city centre. This is the world-famous TRACK exhibition, when 30 international artists are invited to work at indoor and outdoor locations around the city. If you fancy heading for the coast then head for Ostend, less than an hour from Ghent by train. It's Belgiums City by the Sea and offers miles of sandy beaches, fabulous restaurants, a lovely long promenade and even a theme park perfect for a summer holiday. Journey: London to Brussels, then a local train to Ghent Journey time: 3 hours Return fare: from 89 More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/ghent

Salzburg
Salzburg is a spectacular, almost theatrical, city. Its most famous associations are with Mozart and the Sound of Music. You can explore both on various tours highlighting the places and locations that are linked to the worlds most loved composer and the 20th-centurys best known movie. There is more to the city than movies and music. Great shopping, fantastic open air events, hiking in the mountains Salzburg is wonderful at any time of year but in the summertime, sitting outside a caf enjoying coffee and some of the best pastries, cakes and chocolate in Europe, it takes some beating. Journey: London to Paris, overnight CityNightLine to Munich, then a local train to Salzburg Journey time: 17 hours Return fare: from 229 More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/salzburg

Bern
Step off the train in Bern and youll find yourself in the heart of Switzerlands striking capital. The public transport is good here, but the centre of Bern is best explored on foot, with its ornate fountains, grand sandstone facades, narrow streets and tapering towers. The River Aare arcs around Berns Old Town, whose fine medieval buildings have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The best view of this wonderfully picturesque place is from the platform of the 101-metre cathedral tower. Bears and Bern are inextricably linked: the city is named after them, they appear on its coat of arms and you can even see them in the flesh in the 16th-century Bear Pits. Journey: London to Paris, then high speed to Bern Journey time: 7 hours Return fare: from 115 More info: www.raileurope.co.uk/bern
