2. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS The device features a mechanical casing that is 4U in height, and as wide as to allow up to 4 pieces to be accommodated in a 19" rack, in addition to normal flush-mounting. The casing is made of a hot-galvanized PVC-coated plate frame inside which the moving part that carries all the electronic circuits and the local interface slides on guides. The pullout action is facilitated by the presence of special "handles" which, when the device is "plugged in", are also used to lock the two parts. The aluminium frame of the moving part renders the latter excellently rigid. The device-system interface terminal blocks are located on top of the casing and, for each electrical connection, a screw clamp is available apt to receive up to 2 cable terminals, 4mm2 in size. Using a special accessory that is included in the supply, the connection can also be made using Faston units. Special error-sensing codes avoid inserting relays other than those compatible with the housing. A cover lid classes the terminal block within the IP20 protection class. When the moving part is pulled out, the current inputs are automatically short-circuited, whereas the voltage and auxiliary circuits are disconnected. The device front bears two labels: one plate lists the factory configuration of the device, namely auxiliary voltage, rated current and frequency; the other plate, always in accordance with the factory configuration, provides an explanation of LED indications. Both these labels can be easily replaced with new ones, which can bear any information as required by the client. As far as the factory configuration relevant to output relays, LED's, digital inputs and relevant settings are concerned, please refer to tables A, B and C. 2.1 Selecting the rating values

MDE/B133 2506 001

The selection of the rated current between 1 or 5 Ampres is made, as regards primary input P (current terminals 1-2, 3-4, 5-6) through jumpers S3, S7, S8 and S9, whereas as regards the secondary input S (current terminals 7-8, 9-10, 11-12) through jumpers S4, S10, S11 and S12; All of the jumpers can be reached when the relay has been pulled out (see fig. 1, 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d). Jumpers S3, S7, S8 and S9 must all be set to an equal rated current. Similarly, also jumpers S4, S10, S11 and S12 shall be set to an equal rated current .

3. OPERATION 3.1 General The differential protection is a device specially conceived to operate in the event of all inner faults affecting a given area, which is identified by the installation points of the CT's current reducers that feed the relay with power. It is sensitive to the vectorial difference for each phase (comparison in module and angle) between the currents coming from the two CT's, and operates when such differential current (Id) reaches the tripping value; in the event of external faults, as the protection concerned by equal currents 'flowing-into' and 'out of the protected area, the Id turns out to be null and, correctly, the protection remains idle. Obviously, as the protection must compare two current signals per phase, the same importance is also taken by the relay's connection to the line CT's and the arrangement of polarities P1 and S1. More in particular, for a transformer's differential protection, a great importance is taken by the fact the currents to be compared are already different in module and phase, as they rely on the voltage ratio and on the machine group. In traditional differential protections, it was therefore necessary to use current adapter transformers to equal in module and phase the currents coming from the two sides of the transformer before they are compared by the protection; this required bulky adapter CT's to be located, which reduced the performance of line CT's. With the differential relay of the MX3 series, you can simulate the operation of such adapter CT's through the programme provided inside the protection and adapt the protection to the insertion actually made; to this aim, the transformer's rated data must be entered (power, primary voltage, secondary voltage, connection group), the CT's primary current and the distribution of polarities P1 S1 (see fig.7). The protection, in calculating the phase adaption, removes any ground fault sequence possibly present in the line, thus proving, also from this viewpoint, to be wholly similar to an application with the traditional adapter CT's. Thus, it makes the protection actually insensitive to the ground fault outside the protected area, independent of the state of the insulated neutral wire, or to ground of the transformer. The differential protection, due to its own operating principle, proves to be intrinsically selective and, hence, instantaneous. 3.2 Stabilized differential current Ratio and angle errors in the line CT's are likely to cause illtimed operations of the relay, and this risk becomes greater as the current flowing through the CT's increases. To provide the protection with the required characteristics of sensitivity to the internal fault and, simultaneously, of stability to the passing fault, the relay presents an operating characteristic of the proportional type, where the value of the differential trip current increases as the withhold current increases. The latter is defined as the greatest current among those adopted for each phase.

MDE/B133 2506 001

The following figure illustrates the operating characteristic. It presents an initial segment AB with constant differential operating current equal to ID> independent of the withhold current, a second segment BC with adjustable P1 slope, a third CD segment with P2 slope, equally adjustable, and a last segment DE with a constant differential operating current equal to ID>> which guarantees a quick operation when the differential current takes very high values. The ID>> threshold guarantees the relay's trip independent of the value of the withhold current and of the block mechanisms against operation on insertion, and against operation due to overfeeding. It is normally set to a value higher than the passing fault current: a differential current greater than this value certainly identifies a fault within the protected area.

3.3 Second harmonic block current The no-load insertion of a transformer is always affected by a great transient current (Inrush) whose amplitude and width rely on the structural features of the transformer and on the residual magnetization. This current, characterized by a high content of second harmonic, only affects one machine winding, and is hence seen by the relay as a differential current. To avoid trips during the insertion transient, the protection is provided with a second harmonic block: for each phase. The second harmonic current and the fundamental portion of the differential current are compared when the second harmonic content of a phase exceeds the set block threshold (expressed in % of the fundamental portion), operation on this phase is blocked (BLOC 2fn: on). The block overshoot is achieved when the second harmonic content becomes lower than 80% the block enable threshold. The relay can be set to allow the block for one phase to be extended to the two phases left (BLOC 2fn: ABC ON) or to be excluded (BLOC 2fn: OFF)

pag. 8

MX3DPT3A
3.4 Fifth harmonic block current An overfed transformer always entails an increase in the magnetizing currents, as these currents can sometimes take values which sometimes exceed the first operating threshold ID>. As these currents feature a high content of fifth harmonic, to avoid ill-timed trips, the relay has been equipped with a special fifth harmonic block: for each phase, the fifth harmonic current and the fundamental portion of the differential current are compared. When the fifth harmonic content of one phase exceeds the set block threshold (expressed in % of the fundamental portion), operation on this phase is blocked (BLOC 5fn: ON). The block overshoot is achieved when the fifth harmonic content falls below 80% the block enable threshold. You can set the relay to allow the lock to be extended from one phase to the two phases left (BLOC 5fn: ABC ON) or excluded (BLOC 5fn: OFF) . 3.5 Breaker failure protection (BF) On the transmission of whatever tripping signal, the t_BF timer is started; the overshoot of the starting thresholds only resets them. If the timer reaches the overtime state, the breaker failure signal is sent and the corresponding total and partial counters are increased. 3.6 Main and spare settings The device can store two settings group named 'main' and 'spare', which can be selected by a programming session through the keyboard, a Personal Computer or the network. The group of settings enabled is indicated on the display unit by 'SETTINGS'. The device, independent of the selections made, can be 'forced' to use the SPARE settings. This forcing can be performed through the network or the permanent enabling of the digital input (IN DIG 1) specially configured to suit the purpose. This condition is signalled by the presence of the characters <!> next to the selected group of settings; when the signal drops, the previously selected group of settings is enabled again, whereas the characters <!> disappear (see paragraph 7.1.3). 4. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS 4.1 Diagnostics

MDE/B133 2506 001

Diagnostic activities are provided which, automatically run on turning on the unit as well as cyclically during operation, allow for the following actions: - signalling fault or failure conditions. This signal deenergizes the diagnostic relay, turns off the green LED (indicating running system) and lights up the red LED (indicating system failure). - system lock-out in the event of faults that might entail illtimed operation (VITAL FAULTS). - failure code displayed indication. The following failures are classed as NON-VITAL FAULTS: - output relay(s) (X1 - X5) failure - communication failure - internal clock failure The following failures fall within the VITAL FAULTS: - power supply unit failure - EEPROM failure - internal or external RAM failure - Analogue-to-Digital converter failure In the presence of vital faults, the device automatically displays the fault code; this condition can only be reset, if the equipment allows this condition to be reset, by enabling the 'settings change' command. In the event that, on starting up the equipment, an EEPROM failure makes it impossible to retrieve the information on the selected dialogue language, the device will continue working using Italian as the default dialogue language. The device includes the 'Watch Dog' function. The diagnostic activity is also aimed at signalling any condition of "inhibited equipment"; this condition is automatically displayed with a dedicated code, the diagnostic relay de-energizes and the red LED (faulty device) goes on. This condition can only be reset by enabling the 'settings change' function. The diagnostics menu also indicates the date of the last changes ever made to the equipment. 4.2 Output circuits The output circuits are made up of six relays, each of them equipped with two contacts (see block diagram). The relay X6, normally energized, is strictly assigned to the diagnostics function. Each remaining relay, if duly programmed through the keyboard, a Personal Computer or the network, can be: - set to perform one or more functions - pre-set for: - monostable operation: immediate return to the quiescent state when the cause that operated it is removed. - bistable operation (MEMOR): the tripping position is maintained until a reset signal comes from the front push-button, the digital input or the serial connection. - a minimum duration of the signal or command (t_IMP). The output relays, except for the diagnostic relay, can all be simultaneously set to "normally energized" (NORMAL.ON=ON) or "normally de-energized" (NORMAL.ON=OFF): this selection is made by acting on the S1 jumper, which can only be reached when the relay is pulled out (see fig. 1, 4e, 4f).

pag. 9

MX3DPT3A
4.3 LED signalling circuits The signalling circuits are made up of twelve LED's (see fig. 5). Four LEDS are rigorously assigned to previously established signalling functions: - (Uaux) green LED ON in the presence of power supply and with correct power supply unit output voltage values - (RUN) green LED ON with fixed light in normal conditions and blinking during setting changing and testing functions - (RUN) red LED ON with fixed light when the diagnostic detects a fault or a condition of inhibition. - (Rx Tx) green LED ON with fixed light when the device is correctly connected, blinking with the communication board not enabled or not configured; OFF when the communication board is not present on the device. Each of the remaining LED's, if duly programmed through the keyboard, a Personal Computer or the network, can be: - set to perform one or more functions - pre-set for: - monostable operation; it immediately goes off when the cause that made it go on is removed - bistable (MEMOR) operation; the LED remains ON until a reset signal is sent from the front push-button, the digital input or the serial connection. Any failure of auxiliary voltage only entails a momentary loss of the luminous signals, which come back again as soon as voltage is restored. A pocket is provided close to the LED's, where LED explanatory labels can be placed. 4.4 Digital inputs Each of the three optoinsulated inputs can be given one or more protection functions by programming them through the keyboard, a Personal Computer or the network. The input voltage can differ from the auxiliary voltage of the device. The digital inputs can be set for enabling by normal energizing or de-energizing. 4.5 Additional timers All the optoinsulated inputs (IN DIG 1,IN DIG 2,IN DIG 3) can be set to be associated with additional timers (t_X1, t_X2, t_X3). When the programmed input is enabled, the associated additional timer is started, and if the timer reaches the overtime status, the tripping signal is sent and maintained until the input is reset. 4.6 Counters Each tripping threshold is associated with a partial and total counter. The counters work within the 0-9999 range; if 9999 is exceeded, the counter is automatically set to zero and the counting restarts from zero. All the partial counters can be set to zero from the keyboard, a Personal Computer or the network. 4.7 Event logging

MDE/B133 2506 001

When a tripping event occurs, the following information is stored in the circulating memory: - operated threshold - day, month, year, time, minute, second and thousandth of a second concerning the tripping moment. - phase current values of primary winding P and secondary winding S as measured at the time of the trip - differential current values as measured at the time of the trip. The information concerning one trip is called event. The circulating memory allows the last 8 events to be stored, and when this number is exceeded, a new record replaces the older: the last event is stored under EVENT 1. The stored events can be read from the front display unit or from a PC serially connected to the device. The device can also record the last 32 changes in state (with related date and time) and make them available through PC or through the network. 4.8 Measurements The device can display the present current values of primary winding P and secondary winding S, expressed in multiples of the In rated currents, and in absolute value, expressed in primary Ampres. The differential current as measured after the adaption is also available, expressed in multiples of the transformer's rated current. The unit also displays the maximum current values, respectively expressed in multiples of the In rated currents as measured dating from the last 'Reset max. values' 4.9 Breaker pole wear index (I2t) Any time the protection operates, with the measured fault current values, the parameter (I2t) is calculated proportionally to the power broken by each breaker's pole, this being a 'wear index' of the same. It is defined by (I)2 t_52) . where: t_52: is the breaker opening time (t_52_P for primary side of breaker, t_52_S for secondary side of breaker). I: phase current expressed in primary ampres. The wear indexes are separately available for pole and breaker (primary and secondary winding) in the measurement menu and can only be reset through the PC or through the network. 4.10 Test Besides the normal diagnostic already dealt with, the device also offers, in the TEST mode, the possibility of testing the LED's, the display unit and the output relays. - The LED test turns on all the LED's, L1 to L8, and the display unit (LCD) for two seconds. Once the test is over, the LED's that were supposed to be ON before the test remain ON and the display unit goes back to the previous information displayed. The test can also be performed in any operating condition, without affecting the operation in progress.

pag. 10

MX3DPT3A
- the relay test allows the output relays X1 to X5 to be sequentially selected and checked for correct operation. In this way, any external signalling or control circuit can be tested, too. The tested relay remains energized for 150 to 200 ms. If starting or tripping commands are already present, the test is not carried out and a dedicated message appears on the display unit. The test on the auxiliary relays does not affect counters, event logs and LED's. 4.11 Alphanumeric code The device can be identified within the system by an alphanumeric code, which can be set by the user directly on the equipment or through a PC. With a network-linked device, the alphanumeric code can only be modified by operating through the network. 4.12 Language The device can display the information in four languages: Italian, English, French and Spanish. The selection of the language is made through the keyboard on the device. 4.13 LCD settings You can pre-set the display unit for fixed (OFF) or timed (ON) backlighting; in the latter case, the display unit goes on, for 300s, at each action on the keyboard. 4.14 Operation inhibit - deconfiguration from the network The inhibition of the device is made necessary in systems already running, to avoid all failures when a protection must be fed whose settings are unknown or you wish to change them. The inhibition takes place by holding pressed, for about 2 s, the settings change push-button on injecting the auxiliary voltage, until the following message is displayed: [ BLOC ] [ ] On releasing the push-button, the condition of inhibited device is signalled through a diagnostic message of fault P. Operation can only be restored by moving to the settings change function, which is however enabled; a temporary loss of auxiliary power supply does not change the inhibited equipment state. If the device is also equipped with a field-bus board, from the BLOC. condition, by holding the settings change push-button pressed for another 2 s, the device will display: [ NET RESET ? ] [_ NO YES _] provided that a confirmation is given, the device can also be made lose its network configuration. The complete inhibit and network deconfiguration procedure is required any time you need to replace the equipment. The reset of an inhibited and deconfigured unit causes the fault K message in the diagnostics until a new configuration of the unit. Operation can only be reset by moving to the settings change function, which is however enabled.

4.15 Serial communication on LONWORKS (TM) bus The device, in the version with the special bus board, can communicate with a central self-monitoring and control system at a speed of 1.2 5 Mbaud. The connection to the field-bus is made by using terminals:43 and 45. The communication board, which can also be added later, is only enabled if the special jumper is provided in S6 whereas it is not enabled when the jumper is located vertically between S5 and S6 (see figure 2). The position of the jumper in S6 without communication board, behaving as if the board were faulty, causes the diagnostics function to display a failure message. Appendix A provides the data available for for the field-bus.

4.16 RS485 serial communication and MODBUS protocol Concerning the communication of devices provided with software version 2.00 and subsequent, three different versions are possible: - whitout any communication card (version MX3DPT3A .11 e .12); - provided with LonWorks(TM) communication card (version MX3DPT3A .61 e .62); - provided with Modbus communication card (version MX3DPT3A .71 e .72); The identification of the installed communication card is automatic. When using an unit provided with LonWorks(TM) communication card, it's required first to effect the relay wiring according to its wiring diagram and later proceed with the configuration of all connected devices; the automatic configuration of connected devices is possible by connecting a PC provided with PCLTA10 or SLTA10 card, in which CORMOX2 software has been installed. When using a device provided with Modbus communication the configuration of each relay may be realized by the front interface, or by the IRMA2 program installed on a PC connected to the relay via front plug. The configuration may be realized also on relays not jet connected together and may be eventually organized in files together with all other settings.

4.17 Fault Recorder The unit can record the course of the input currents on the primary and secondary windings (IA_P, IB_P, IC_P,IA_S, IB_S, IC_S ), and the logical states of: 8 LED's, 5 auxiliary relays, 5 digital inputs and 3 additional timers. The total recording time equals 2.5s, which can be divided into adjustable before-start and after-start time. The start of the fault-recorder function can take place by: tstart, trip, enabling of digital inputs and timers. The selection of the starting parameters, the graphic display and the fault-recorder reset can take place through PC or through the network. The function can also be reset by temporarily removing the auxiliary voltage. 4.18 Tripping circuit continuity monitoring The use of a digital input enabled by normal de-energizing combined with one of the additional timers TX allows for monitoring the continuity of the tripping coil circuit, both when the breaker is open and closed.

It scrolls the menu to the left or selects the value to be changed, if the settings change function is enabled. [] It resets the stored LED's indications if the cause has been removed, or the partial counters if you are in the "display counters" menu. It takes the end relays to quiescent state when they are set to bistable operation. If pressed for at least 2s, this key enables the settings to be changed. When the settings change function is enabled, the green LED (RUN) lights up blinking. If pressed once again for at least 2s, the system goes back to the normal running conditions and, provided that a confirmation is given, the new settings become the current ones (the key can only be reached by removing the cover). During the setting change operations, the device continues working with the old settings. If the changes made are confirmed in the presence of a fault, they are not made the current ones until the event is over: the interrupt state is signalled for 3s by a message on the display unit, after which you are prompted to confirm the changes made. If pressed upon feeding the device with auxiliary voltage until a failure message appears on the display, this key inhibits the device from operating. Keys If simultaneously pressed for at least 2s, these keys enable the protection to be tested. When the testing activity is enabled, the green LED (RUN) lights up blinking. If simultaneously pressed for at least 2s during the TEST routine, these keys enable you to leave the protection testing mode.

This rich and versatile device is suitable for an excellent protection of two-winding transformers of whatever power, vectorial group and voltage ratio without normally needing to use external adapter CT's. This minimizes overall space, wrong wiring and performance of line CT's. Moreover, it adapts, through setting, to the connection made to the CT's (position of polarities), thus avoiding changes in the wiring and, hence, in the protection schemes on setting the machine to operate.

MX3DPT3A
8. INSTALLATION - TRANSPORT 8.1 ESD electrostatic charges The relay uses electronic components that are highly sensitive to electrostatic charges. These charges can be present in every human being. Therefore, the operator who happens to handle the movable part of the equipment housing the electronic circuits, must take preventive measures to avoid damaging the relay: - before removing the movable part, the operator must discharge any possible potential left by touching the housing. - avoid touching electronic components, printed circuit boards and connectors. Handle it by using the mechanical frame. - only lay the device on anti-static surfaces or on surfaces featuring the same potential as the operator. - the relay must only be stored and carried in the special antistatic bag. Special electronic devices require the operator and the unit to be both ground-connected. This is also true for the measuring equipment, as far as this is possible. As far as the following action is possible and reasonable, do not pull out the moving part from the casing to avoid causing mechanical and electrostatic damages to the protection. 8.2 Acceptance - storage Although protective relays are generally of robust construction, they require a careful treatment prior to installation on site, since they must be carefully packed and unpacked, without applying any force and using suitable tools. Once supplied, the relays must be thoroughly inspected to ensure that they have not undergone shipping damages. If the relays are not immediately installed upon reception, they must be stored in places free from dust and moisture, in their original packing. Storage temperature: -25C + 80C. 8.3 Assembling and connection - Remove the protective cover until the four fastening holes become visible. - Place the equipment into the hole of the panel-board and secure it by fastening the four screws (see fig. 6) - Connect the ground screw of the equipment to the panel's grounding system throught a cable of suitable gauge (>4mm2) and shortest length (<1m). - Perform the wiring using the screw or faston couplings of the interface terminal boards. In the faston wiring, the IP20 casing of the terminal board shall be located before connecting the faston coupling to the relay. In screw wiring, the side wings of the IP20 casing matching the wired terminals shall be removed or folded in. Any assembling and connection work shall be carried out to the best workmanship. 9.3 Final inspection 9. SETTING THE UNIT AT WORK

MDE/B133 2506 001

The relay is supplied with factory settings and configurations as indicated in tables A, B and C (factory settings), making reference to an insertion as shown in fig. 5. These settings may happen not to suit the specific system conditions. Therefore, the unit must however be configured anew and, to this aim, tables D, E and F are provided for customer's use, which must be used as a support to develop a customized setting scheme. 9.1 Safety regulations During the equipment tests and start-up, the general safety regulations applicable to electrical systems must be complied with. Failure to comply with these regulations might cause harm to the working staff and damage to property. All the inspections and tests must only be carried out by specially trained personnel. 9.2 Checking ratings Inquire whether the equipment ratings are consistent with those of the system, namely: - auxiliary voltage - the rated phase current of primary winding and the rated phase current of secondary winding. This check must be performed by checking the position of the jumpers located on the boards (see figures. 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d). - the setting of the output relays as normally energized or normally de-energized; this check must be performed by checking the position of the jumper located on the board (see figures 4e, 4f). - the presence of the special S6 jumper, see figure 2, if the communication board is supplied and if the field-bus is present.

I CAUTION
hazardous voltages can remain in the unit even in the absence of power supply, or after it has been pulled out of its casing (capacitor's storage)

Feed the unit with auxiliary voltage. On starting on the device after a long time of power failure, the device can show an 'L' (internal clock) type fault, a NOT VITAL fault which does not endanger the remaining functions. By updating DATE and TIME, the normal working conditions are reinstated. If the system is running and the relay's settings are unknown, the unit must be inhibited from operating before feeding it with voltage by pressing the "settings change" key (see 5.14 and 7.1.14 clause 2) to avoid troubles. Select the rated frequency of the system on the device, set the primary current of the phase CT's (primary and secondary windings) and the related polarities, set power, primary and secondary winding voltage, group of the transformer to be protected.

MX3DPT3A
Figure 7 shows how to set the item POLARITIES as a function of the insertion of the protection. Load settings and configure relays, LED's and digital inputs as per the project scheme. Since the unit is equipped with a self-diagnosis system, all hardware and software failures possibly occurring are automatically detected; this makes it useless to test the thresholds for accuracy, which can however be tested by making reference to the stated tolerances. It is however advisable to perform the following tests: Power Supply Unit Test - Check that the burden of the auxiliary voltage circuit falls within the 5 to 10W range as far as the d.c. supply is concerned, and within the 10 to 20VA range as far as the a.c. supply is concerned. The power supply unit is protected by a special 5x20 2 A rapid fuse, class IEC127/II, as regards the unit with 19100Vcc (or 19-72Vca) auxiliary supply, and a 1A fuse as regards the unit with 64-300Vcc (or 64-275Vca) auxiliary supply. Checking connections - With the protection at work, check in the MEASUREMENT menu for the correct reading of the primary and secondary winding currents. Moreover, ensure that the differential currents IA-D, IB-D and IC-D are null (or however not exceeding the difference current due to CT's errors): a signal that is twice the phase value can indicate the occurrence of a phase reversal, (verify the correct matching of the set CT's polarities with the actual plant conditions); whereas a signal equalling the phase value indicates the occurrence of a phase interruption (which can be even found when the corresponding reading value is missing). Other differential current values can be due to wrong settings of the characteristics of the machine to be protected (power, primary voltage, secondary voltage and group). - Test each output relay as indicated in the TEST MENU paragraph, and simultaneously test the corresponding external circuit. - Check that the wiring of the digital inputs corresponds to the arrangement provided on the project plans. If the relay has not worked correctly or shows VITAL failures, it must be put out of order and sent back to the factory for repair or new gauging. The presence of a NON-VITAL failure does not cause an illtimed operation, but demands an analysis of the fault type to assess its importance (for instance, a failing end relay should be replaced with another end relay that is not currently being used or, else, whose function is not strictly required). The possibility of exchanging the relays makes it possible to maintain the protection scheme working during repairs, so that any faulty relay can be replaced with a new one of the same type.

MDE/B133 2506 001

To complete the start-up stage, before setting the system at work, ensure that: - the device settings match the project settings. - the device bears the correct alphanumeric code (plant identifier) that identifies it. - all the device memories (LED's, maximum values, partial counters and wear index) are reset. - the green Uaux and RUN LED's are lit up with permanent light; in the event of network connection, the green RxTx LED must be lit up, too. - the explanatory labels of LED's and the general characte ristics of the device bear the correct information. The relay can be left with the display showing any of the windows of the main display menus.
