DR. INGLEFIELD
wTaiG-atPains
ToRIiYou-s.
1. Do you have hip pain?
Is your quality of life limited by
that pain?
Is walking to your front door and
experiencing the world outside
becoming a monumental task?
If the answer to any of these
questions is yesyou may
have hip arthritis. There are
a number of non-surgical, or
conservative, treatment options
for osteoarthritis and other
forms of arthritis. Typically, non-
surgical options start with gentle
exercise and physical therapy.
As the arthritis becomes
more painful and limiting,
surgery (hip replacement) is
generally recommended after
conservative treatment options
fail to provide relief.
Hip replacement surgery involves
replacing a damaged joint with
a new one called a prosthesis.
These new joints usually are
made of special metals, such as
stainless steel or titanium, and
durable, wear-resistance plastic.
Prostheses are designed to be
accepted by the body and resist
corrosion, degradation and
wear so they can last 15 years
or more. Hips and knees are the
joints replaced most often, but
shoulders, ngers, ankles and

elbows can be replaced as
well.
3. Many options exist
for hip replacement.
Minimally invasive
total hip replacement
techniques are becoming
very popular. One of
the most talked about
orthopedic advancements
is the ASI (Anterior
Supine Intermuscular) hip
replacement technique.
Minimally invasive hip
replacement involves
more than just a shorter
incision. Modern minimally
invasive techniques
also focus on the way
surgeons gain access to
the hip joint. The goal is
to minimize muscle and
tendon disruption, making
surgery less traumatic
for patients, allowing for
shorter hospital stays and
quicker recoveries.
Before surgery, the surgeon
evaluates the patients range
of motion and joint strength,
takes a medical history
and reviews medications
currently being taken. Blood
tests and X-rays also can be
ordered. The doctor may
put a small, lighted tube
called an arthoscope into the
joint to check for damage.
In some cases, only the
damaged parts would be
replaced, not the entire joint.
During a hip replacement
surgery, diseased or
damaged bone and tissue is
removed and a metal stem
and attached ball is then
inserted into healthy bone
and tissue that are left intact.
New joints can be cemented
into place to hold the new
joint to the bone, or the
prosthesis can be placed
without cement so bone
can grow and attach to it.
A prosthesis is designed to
duplicate the mechanical
properties of the joint being
replaced. A prosthetic knee,
for example, will be exible
enough to bend without
breaking and strong enough
to bear weight.
Most hip and knee
replacement patients
are discharged from the
hospital the following
day, stated Dr. Krenzel,
orthopedic surgeon. Patients
will be encouraged to stand
and start walking soon after
surgery with a walker or
crutches. Pain from sore
muscles or surgery can be
helped with medication and
usually disappears in a few
weeks or months. Physical
therapy exercises will help
regain motion in the joint.
More than 90 percent of
joint replacement surgeries
are successful. However,
if problems do arise, most
can be treated. Possible
complications from joint
replacement surgery include
infections, blood clots,
loosening, dislocation or
wear of the new joint, or
nerve and blood vessel
injury. Hip replacement
patients also may experience
a change in leg length or
joint stiffening. Following
hip replacement surgery,
most patients eventually will
be able to swim, play golf
or bike ride comfortably,
but high-impact sports such
as basketball and running
would not be possible,
added Dr. Krenzel.
Joint replacement surgery
is becoming more common
in the United States,
with more than 773,000
Americans having a hip or
knee replaced annually. For
more information about joint
replacement, check with your
doctor or call 1-800-339-
8758 for a free referral to a
physician near you.

In spite of dramatic reductions in the
burden of heart disease and stroke,
cardiovascular disease remains the
prevalent illness and leading cause
of death in the United States. As
reported in a recent study published in
Circulation, prevention of 63 percent of
heart attacks and 31 percent of strokes
could be accomplished by adhering to
appropriate lifestyles and drug therapy.
The American Heart Association
estimates that 78 percent of U.S. adults
are eligible for one or more preventive
interventions.
One of our goals as cardiologists is
to devise a prevention strategy after
assessing our patients risk for heart
disease and stroke.
By focusing on certain lifestyles and
drug therapies, we can begin to
make an impact on the number of
heart attack and stroke cases in the
country. Patients with a poor diet can
decrease the intake of saturated fat and
cholesterol by cutting the total calories
from fat to less than 7 percent per day
and reducing cholesterol to less than
200 mg per day.
Physical inactivity contributes to the risk
for heart disease and stroke. Increased
activity and exercise, along with
better weight control, can help reduce
blood pressure, decrease cholesterol
levels, lessen insulin resistance and
have an overall favorable inuence on
cardiovascular function.
High cholesterol can be treated on
an individual basis, and goals are
based on risk assessment. High blood
pressure is the most common primary
diagnosis in America. Treatment of high
blood pressure is associated with a
reduction in heart attacks, strokes and
heart failure.

COLORECTAL CANCER
The Silent Killer
If you are 50 or over,
talk to your doctor about
colon cancer screening.
Colorectal cancer is
the #3 cause of cancer
death among men and
women in the United
States. Each year,
more than 140,000
people are diagnosed
with colorectal cancer
in the U.S. and over
50,000 people die from
it. Colorectal cancer is
considered a silent killer
because often there
are no symptoms until
it is too late to treat, so
prevention is key.

Preventable.
Treatable.
Beatable.
The good news is that
80-90% of colorectal
cancers can be
prevented by regular
screening. The majority
of colorectal cancers
arise from precancerous
growths in the colon
called polyps, which
can be found during a
screening exam and
removed before they turn
into cancer. Colorectal
cancer screening should
be a part of routine
healthcare for people 50
years of age and over.
Over 50?
Family History?
Get Screened.
Age is the single most
important risk factor
for the disease. Even
people who lead a
healthy lifestyle can still
develop polyps and
cancer. Both men and
women are affected
by colorectal cancer
equally. Once you are
over 50, your lifetime
chance of developing
colon cancer is one in
twenty. In individuals with
a family history of colon
cancer and some other
conditions, screening
should begin at age 40.
Research has shown
that African-Americans
should begin screening
at age 45.
Colonoscopy
is the Preferred
Prevention Test
Colonoscopy is
considered the
preferred colorectal
cancer screening test
because it is the only
test that both nds and
removes precancerous
polyps during the
same sedated exam.
Recent studies show
convincing evidence that
colonoscopy drastically
reduces the risk of death
from colon cancer. A
person at average risk
with normal colonoscopy
results wont need
another exam for 10
years. Should a polyp or
cancer be found, follow-
up intervals may be
more frequent.
The colonoscopy
procedure is safe and
effective, well-tolerated,
and can potentially save
your life.

1. Get regular colorectal cancer
screenings beginning at age 50.
If you have a personal or family
history of colorectal cancer or
colorectal polyps, or a personal
history of another cancer or
inammatory bowel disease, talk to
your doctor about earlier screening.
2. Eat a low-fat diet.
3. Tobacco use increases your
risk of colorectal cancer. If
you use tobacco, quit. If you
dont use tobacco, dont start.
4. Exercise for at least 30 minutes
three to four days each week.
Even moderate exercise such as
walking, gardening, or climbing
steps may help reduce your risk.
5. Reduce weight. Obesity is
now a well-established risk factor
for colon cancer and many other
chronic diseases.
If you are over 50 or have a family
history of colorectal cancer, talk
to your healthcare provider about
getting screened today. Find out
what kind of screening procedure is
right for you. It could save your life.

EXPERIENCE

New Patients Always Welcome!

Very few people think
about hospice care until
circumstances demand it.
But as with most difcult
decisions, the anxiety
caused by agonizing
over it is often worse than
simply tackling the task
headlong. And once a few
necessary choices are
determined beforehand,
patients and families can
focus on acquiring excellent
care when the time comes
rather than dealing with
the pressure of guring out
the right thing at the last
minute.
When youre evaluating
hospices, keep the following
considerations in mind to
help with your decision:
HOSPICE IS NOT
A PLACE
While hospice houses are
the most public feature of
hospice, hospice is more
accurately a program of
medical care and services.
For certain patients, being
cared for at a hospice house
is appropriate. For the
majority, however, hospice
care is provided where the
patient is most comfortable
at home, in a community
facility, or wherever home
might be.
THE CHOICE OF
A HOSPICE IS
YOURS
All hospices are not the
same, and they dont
answer to a single governing
body. Hospices are also not
restricted geographically like
schools or voting districts,
so youre free to choose
the one that best ts your
needs. And just because a
hospice operates from your
county of residence doesnt
mean youre obligated to
use it. Instead, do your
research and choose the
organization that offers the
best care for a patients
individual needs.
SIZE COUNTS
Of course, you want a
hospice that makes you
feel comfortable and whose
staff treats both patient and
family with care and respect.
But, just as youd opt for a
surgeon who gains expertise
from repeatedly performing
surgeries, you want a
hospice thats experienced
in end-of-life care. In a
recent New York Times
article by Susan Seliger, Dr.
R. Sean Morrison, director
of the National Palliative
Care Research Center at
the Mount Sinai School
of Medicine in New York,
advises, The larger the
hospice, usually the more
services for the patient
and the caregiver. Ask for
their daily patient census
several hundred patients per
day is a good size.

Thats why Frye Regional
Medical Center chose

Approach to Cardiac

for short, was pioneered
by cardiologists at Duke
Medical Center because
they saw a need to
streamline cardiac care.
RACE is a state-wide
program which involves
emergency services
personnel, physicians,
nurses and administrators
working together to reduce
the time between the
occurrence of a heart attack
and initial treatment.
RACE has since been
named one of the top

It is now being adopted
not only throughout North

nation in a project called

Traxler. The RACE program
empowers paramedics to
make smart decisions on

Childhood vaccinations
are issued to help prevent
children from getting
sick by building their
immunity to diseases that
were once prolic. But
in the wake of confusing
information regarding the
safety of vaccinations,
particularly the concern
that some may be linked
to the onset of autism,
more and more parents
are opting out of having
their children vaccinated --
sometimes with unfortunate
consequences.
Many diseases that are
effectively prevented by
simple vaccines have
cropped up once more.
This can be attributed to
children simply not getting
fully vaccinated. Nearly
80 percent of parents are
uncomfortable about having
their children vaccinated,
according to a survey
analyzed by researchers
at the CDC. Pain from the
needle itself and uncertainty
about the safety of vaccines
is leading many parents
to forego shots or delay
certain vaccinations until
their children are older. It
is estimated that roughly
8 percent of American
children are now not getting
regular vaccinations or
doing alternate schedules,
and 2 percent are not
getting shots at all.
Some parents would like
to have their children
vaccinated but have
postponed routine visits

and subsequent loss of
health insurance. Some

victim to budget cuts that
have led to shortages of

In 2008, the Centers for
Disease Control and
Prevention issued an alert
regarding Haemophilus
inuenza type b, commonly
referred to as Hib. Five
children in Minnesota
contracted the disease,
three of whom who were
not vaccinated.
The CDC also reported that
there were 17 outbreaks
and 222 cases of measles
reported in 2011. A disease
that was essentially wiped
out in North America is
now showing up again
and the numbers are
rising. Dr. Jason Bowling,
an infectious disease
specialist, said that in 2011
the United States had the
highest number of measles
cases of any country in the
last 15 years. Although it is
likely that most of the cases
were contracted outside
of the country, kids who
haven't been vaccinated
are highly susceptible
to measles onset as a
result, potentially leading
to a greater number of
outbreaks in the United
States and Canada.
Whooping cough, or
pertussis, is a highly
infectious respiratory
disease that was once
considered eradicated
but has also made a
resurgence. Various states
across the country have
reported many whopping
cough outbreaks, to the
point that it has been
labeled an epidemic once
more. Health ofcials in
Washington state have
said that the number of
outbreaks from spring 2012
are the highest since the
1940s. While whooping
cough is usually not fatal
among older children and
young adults, it can be very
dangerous for infants.
Most health professionals
agree that vaccinations
are important to the well-
being of the child and
the community, providing
the safest way to prevent
certain diseases or reduce
their severity. There are
several recommended
vaccinations that children
should receive:
DtaP: Diphtheria, tetanus
and pertussis
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Hib
Inuenza
MMR: Measles, mumps
and rubella
Pneumococcal
Polio
Varicella: Chickenpox
Smallpox
Parents who have
any concerns about
vaccinations should
speak to a physician to
weigh the pros and cons
of each vaccination.

WHAT IS YOUR DAY LIKE?
I get up at 6 a.m. with my
2-year-old son and spend
the next 60 to 90 minutes
getting ready for our days. I
leave the house between 7
a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and drive
to work. I always stop for a
large coffee at Starbucks
and then listen to the news
or to an audible book on the
way. Currently, I am listening
to The Twelve Tribes of
Hattie by Anayna Mathis
Every morning, I start
my workday at 8:45 a.m.
with hospital leadership
in what we call our
morning huddle. This is
a meeting where we hear
about house wide patient
volumes, project goals
and completions, safety
information and other
updates. Then, the day
really begins.
I am responsible for The
Center for Women and
Children, a large division
of the hospital with many
departments. I spend
some time in various areas
talking to staff, patients and
leadership in an attempt to
stay in touch with the issues
that affect them daily.
During the last 18 months,
a huge part of my daily
work has been managing
many large and small
details in the planning and
organizing processes for
the opening of the new
Pavilion, which houses most
of the departments within
The Center for Women
and Children. Over this
time, I have learned to read
architectural plans, met
with many vendors and
consultants, and worked
with most departments in the
hospital to ensure a smooth
transition of services. We
have started the moving
process and deliveries
began in the Birthing Center
on February 4, 2013.
The many teams and
committees that have
been formed to coordinate
our efforts have done a
tremendous job; and I am
proud to say that the Birthing
Center has opened for
business in our new facility.
We will move the Level III
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU) on February 21, 2013.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK
FORWARD TO WHEN YOU
TO GO TO WORK EACH DAY?
I look forward to the energy
and enthusiasm my team
and staff has for improving
patient experiences and
exceeding expectations.
I eagerly anticipate our
successes from working
together to positively
impact women, children
and families. By offering
exceptional evidenced-
based care with true
kindness and compassion,
and by facilitating a family
centered model of care,
we set the standard for
excellence in obstetric,
newborn and pediatric care.
Everyday, I get excited
about putting the nishing
touches on the details for the
upcoming move of the
Level III NICU to the new
Pavillion. Families will have
private rooms to stay with
their babies housed in our
Level III NICU, promoting
family bonding in a quiet
healing setting. Women
who are ready for delivery
have access to amenities
in the new Birthing
Center, including wireless
monitoring, and each room
is equipped with a deep
tub for relaxation, a private
refrigerator, an incredibly
comfortable rocker glider,
and a specially selected
sofa offering comfort for
her partner in each room.
The goal is to make her
labor experience the best
available in the region.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE
YOUR BUSINESS AND
FAMILY/SOCIAL LIFE?
Life is all about
compromise. I try to give
110 percent to all of my
endeavors, including
work, my family and
other personal interests.
I prioritize constantly and
understand the limitations
inherent in our busy lives.
I believe that being fully
present in what you are
doing allows your impact to
be far greater than if you are
distracted. To that end, I try
to bring a strong focus to
my priorities.
I also get help when I need
it. At the hospital, that
means working with teams
and constantly sharing the
burden, along with helping
to reduce the chance of
totally overwhelming one
person. When I am at home,
I get a baby-sitter if needed,
a housekeeper occasionally,

FUNERAL
PREARRANGEMENT
AWise Financial and
Emotional Decision
WHAT IS FUNERAL
PREARRANGEMENT?
Funeral prearrangement is
planning and preparing in
advance for the one inevitable
thing in life. As the saying
goes, there are two things that
are certain in life...death and
taxes. Though some people
have found ways to avoid their
taxes, it goes without saying
that we have not as yet found
a way to avoid death.
We know, too, that one of
the most difcult times our
families will ever face is the
death of a loved one. Doesnt
it make sense to prepare as
much as possible in advance
so the we make this an easier
time for them?
WHATARE THE
BENEFITS OF
PREARRANGEMENT?
Planning out funeral details
in advance with the assistance
of a professional is a complete
free service we offer our
community members. Many
consumer groups highly
recommend advance funeral
planning because you are
able to
Plan together as a
family, rather that alone
(after the death).
Spare your loved ones
from having to make
diffcult decisions.
Ensure you wishes are
well-documented and
carried out.
Help control costs
and reduce emotional
overspending
Personalize your plan
to refect your unique
personality.
PREARRANGEMENT... A
PRICELESS GIFT
Families who have had a
loved one prearrange dont
really tend to say, I wish Mom
hadnt done this. Instead, they
are grateful for the care and
concern a parent or spouse
showed. They are thankful that
they didnt have to make those
difcult decisions alone. They
are comforted in knowing that
they are following the wishes
of their loved one.
This is a gift only you can
give, a nal act of love for
those you care about the
most. There are many reasons
why funeral prearrangement
is wise decision, both
emotionally and nancially
but perhaps most important of
all, prearrangement gives you
and your loved ones peace of
mind knowing everything will
be taken care of... and that is a
priceless gift.
and I even have someone
come every few months
to cook and freeze lots of
meals. So, if we dont have
time to cook, we always
have something healthy and
wholesome to eat.
WHATS LEFT ON THE
BUCKET LIST?
Well, my rst priority is to
see my services transition
into the new Pavilion. Then,
I cant wait to get started
on the renovation project
to completely rebuild
the pediatric wing of the
hospital. Next on my list is
to nd a permanent home
for the hospitals outpatient
prenatal care ofce, which
is temporarily located
inside Catawba County
Public Health (CCPH). In
the coming years, I want to
be heavily involved in the
process of documenting
our excellence for our fourth
Magnet designation in 2014.

My personal bucket list
includes watching my son
grow from toddler-hood into
childhood, and becoming
a condent, optimistic,
healthy, well-behaved and
respectful young man. I
hope to foster in him his
self-chosen interests and
talents, which currently
include learning to swim,
riding a bike and playing
the drums. I hope to expose
him to many cultures,
languages and diversity
through the arts and travel.
I hope to keep my
relationship with my
spouse strong and healthy
by maintaining weekly
date nights, excellent
communication and shared
decision-making.
On a concrete basis, I
would like to go on another
family cruise in the next year
or two, go to the theatre
in New York and London
in the next ve years, and
eventually travel extensively
in the US to all the western
National Parks with our son.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD
YOU GIVE WOMEN
LOOKING TO GET AHEAD?
The biggest advice I would
give is to nd your passion
and nd a career in that
eld. Never work at an
organization or choose
a career you dont feel
great passion for. Work is
going to take a big part of
your energy and time, and
you want to make sure
you really believe in what
you are doing. Always
remember, work feeds you
as much as you feed it.
WHAT IS THE BEST
ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?
Remember, it is not about
you so dont take things
personally.
Adjust course when
needed.
Be grateful for the
lessons.
Keep the big picture.
Pause if unsure and let
things reveal themselves.
WHAT MOTIVATES/
INSPIRES YOU?
I am motivated by
opportunities to change
the world for the better.
That might sound lofty,
but I rmly believe my
responsibility, as a human
being, is to leave this world
a little better than I found
it. I try to do that on a
daily basis. I am inspired
by those who succeed at
this goal in creative and
innovative ways.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR
MOST SUCCESSFUL
BUSINESS DAY.
As much as we develop
services and opportunities
to support health in the
community, we need to let
the community know what is
available at CVMC. My most
successful days include
visiting with physician
colleagues in neighboring
counties, and letting them
know about the high risk
pregnancy and Level III
NICU services available
in their community. As the
only provider of extremely
premature infant care to
families and babies in the
Unifour area, it is essential
that providers know they
dont have to refer clients
who need these services to
Winston-Salem or Charlotte.
Other aspects of a
successful day include
talking to a patient and her
family about how pleased
she is with her care and
experience, or reporting
to the staff successful
implementation of
improvement projects.
TELL US ABOUT A
PERSONAL GOAL YOU
ACHIEVED.

care model, for women
receiving their prenatal care
at CVMC Maternity Services.
This model of prenatal
care, where women meet
together monthly in a group
of 10 for their prenatal visit
and teaching sessions, is
so inspiring and exciting. It
was in place at the health
department when I rst
interviewed to work at CVMC
eight years ago, but when I
started the job three months
later it was eliminated. Now,
after a signicant time lapse
and a new partnership with
CCPH that has resulted in
CVMC managing the county
prenatal clinic, we have
successfully reinstituted
this model of care that is so
empowering and positive for
many women. We had our
rst group in 2012, we will
have a new group for every
remaining month of 2013,
and each woman presenting
for care will decide which
model is right for her. It is a
dream coming true!
TELL ME A STORY FROM
YOUR CHILDHOOD
My father was a huge
inspiration to me growing
up. He instilled in each of
his ve children the belief
that they could accomplish
anything that was important
to them. He was fearless in
his career as a White House
Correspondent, and also in
his ght with cancer that he
lost when I was 16.
My mother raised me to be
a midwife. She was a labor
nurse, and when I was very
little, she began talking to
me about midwifery. She
encouraged me to pursue
this dream, one that she
was unable to achieve
personally. I followed her
guidance and became a
hospital candy striper, and
eventually a weekend unit
secretary in the labor and
delivery department while I
was in high school. When
I went to college, my focus
was on nursing school. After
several years, I enrolled in
graduate school to become
a midwife, a dream I gladly
and proudly inherited from
my mom.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO
BE DOING FIVE YEARS
FROM NOW?
I hope to be delivering
babies, managing maternity
programs, changing lives
and supporting women
and their families. Not to
mention, raising a happy
and healthy 7-year-old boy.

While the physicians at
Graystone Eye treat all
ages, individuals over
age 50 are at the greatest
risk for developing more
serious eye disorders such
as macular degeneration,
diabetic eye disease and
cataracts.
Great strides have been
made in technology in
recent years and Graystone
Eye is dedicated to staying
on the cutting-edge of this
new technology for the
benet of their patients.
For instance, cataract
surgery was once performed
only if the lens was very
cloudy and the patient could
barely see. Technology
is so advanced now, we
perform surgery much
earlier leading to substantial
improvement in vision.
The newer advanced,
multifocal lens implants
available correct both
near and distance vision
and astigmatism following
cataract surgery, says
Graystone Cornea Specialist,
Dr. Richard Chang.
A number of our older
patients who arent
candidates for iLASIK opt
for clear lens exchange,
said Refractive Specialist,
Dr. Trey Oursler. This is
an elective procedure, very
similar to cataract surgery,
that reduces the individuals
dependence on glasses.
The added benet is these
patients will never get a
cataract.
As Baby Boomers
reach retirement
age, the incidence of
macular degeneration
also increases. Retina
Specialists, Dr. Reginald
Williams and Dr. Patrick
Kelty, encourage seniors to
get a complete eye exam
annually to head off the
potential for serious and
irreversible vision loss.
An ounce of prevention
is still worth a pound of
cure for this eye disease,
said Dr. Williams. Its
heartbreaking to see
patients come in to our
ofce who have waited
too long for treatment that
could have preserved their
vision, said Dr. Kelty. If
treated early with Avastin
or Lucentis injections,
damage can sometimes be
reversed. However, early
intervention is critical.

Glorias brother was
Lloyds longtime friend,
and the two men once

Although Glorias brother
died unexpectedly,

made that commitment
a huge challenge, even

Immediately after coming

Best of all, Lloyd has

26 Hickory Morganton SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH
You have a cough that wont go
away. Your voice is becoming
hoarse and you are frequently out
of breath. You start wheezing and
seem to be constantly battling
infections. So you go to your
doctor and undergo a physical
exam, give a complete family
history, take a blood test and have
an X-ray or computed tomography
(CT) scan of the chest. Previously
X-rays were recommended
for screening patients for lung
cancer but as more research
has been done the American
Cancer Society has recently
recommended low dose CT
scans to screen for lung cancer in
certain patients instead.
Your doctor suspects lung
cancer based on those test
results and orders a biopsy to
conrm the diagnosis. A biopsy
involves removing a small
amount of tissue and analyzing
it for cancer cells. This can be
done several different ways.
Sputum cytology involves
checking samples of phlegm
coughed up from the lungs.
Thoracentesis uses a long
needle to remove uid between
the chest wall and lung.
Bronchoscopy requires
passing a thin, exible tube into
the air passages of the lungs.
Needle aspiration allows
doctors to insert a small needle into
a tumor to extract a small sample.
Thoracoscopy calls for
making several small incisions
in the chest wall and inserting a
thin, lighted tube to look at the
lungs and nearby tissues.
Thoracotomy requires
opening the chest to examine
the lungs directly.
LUNG CANCER
SCREENING
PROGRAM
Lung cancer is the leading cause
of cancer death for both men and
women in the United States.

Frye Regional Medical Center offers
one of the only lung cancer screening
programs in the region. Our goal is to
provide a program to help those who
could be at risk for developing lung
cancer to receive diagnosis and
treatment earlier, when treatment
and survival outcomes may be better.
Who should be screened for lung cancer?
Current or former smokers aged 55-74 who have
greater than or equal to 30 pack year history of
smoking, and who have no current symptoms
and have not had an abnormal chest x-ray.
How can I schedule an appointment?
What is the cost?
If you feel you may benet from this screening, talk
to your physician or call 828-315-3596, option 2.
The cost of this screening is $249 (insurance may
cover). A physicians order is necessary, and the

Mediastinoscopy involves
making an incision at the top of
the breastbone to take tissue
or lymph node samples.
A newer procedure that is
available at Frye Regional
Medical Center is called
Electromagnetic Navigational
Bronchoscopy. This is a
minimally invasive procedure
where a CT screen is done
which creates a virtual map
of the lungs. This way we
can locate, biopsy and even
tag lesions for radiation that
we could not even reach with
traditional bronchoscopy. It
is helping us diagnose lung
cancer at a much earlier and
more treatable phase than
before, said William Erwin, MD
pulmonologist at Frye Regional
Medical Center.
Your doctor also may want
you to have an imaging test
to help locate a suspicious
area or cancer starting point,
determine if or how far the
cancer has spread, and decide
the best course of treatment.
Your options for this procedure
include:
A spiral CT scan that
produces detailed multi-
dimensional images of the
inside of your body with a
special X-ray machine. The
scanner rotates around
the body continuously and
pictures are collected more
quickly than a standard CT.
You do not have to hold your
breath for as long and there is
less chance of blurred images
caused by breathing motion.
Endobronchial ultrasound
that uses a transducer tted
onto a bronchoscope and then
passed down into the windpipe
to produce sound waves and
pick up echoes as they bounce
off body tissues. Lymph
nodes and the area between
the lungs can be examined
with this imaging test. If a
suspicious area is located,
a biopsy can be performed
by passing a hollow needle
through a bronchoscope.
A positron emission
tomography (PET) scan to
complement information
gathered from other scans or
through a physical exam. A
PET scan involves injecting
radioactive sugar. Most lung
cancer cells quickly absorb
the sugar and light up during
the scan.
A magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) scan that uses
radio waves to produce images
of soft tissues in the body. This
type of scan typically is used
to locate any metastases to the
brain or spinal cord.
A bone scan to help
determine if cancer has spread
to the bones.
Symptoms of lung cancer
also may be caused by other
conditions. It is important to
see your doctor to determine
the cause of illness and begin
treatment. If you do have lung
cancer, early treatment can
potentially relieve symptoms
and may help you live longer.

Why Do I Still
Have Pain,
Continued on Pg. 30
I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST WHIPLASH
?
These words are spoken to
doctors on a daily basis by
patients that have lingering
or recurring pain after being
involved in a car crash.
Unfortunately, most people
and doctors are unaware of
the severe ligament injuries
that can occur with motor
vehicle collisions (MVC),
even those considered
minor impact.
UNDERSTANDING
THE PROBLEM
Whiplash is a term people
commonly use to describe
a cervical acceleration
deceleration (CAD) injury. I
will use the word whiplash
because it is what most
people are familiar with
when speaking about these
injuries. Whiplash injuries
are estimated to cost the
US $346 billion dollars per
year, close to the cost of
heart disease, the leading
cost of death in the US.
Injuries relating to motor
vehicle collisions are a major
public health risk, and cost
insurers, employers, and
most importantly individuals,
signicant time and money.
The larger problem is that
in many cases the injured
person loses the ability to
work and enjoy life as they
had in the past.
ARE WHIPLASH
INJURIES REAL?
A common misperception
is that whiplash injuries
are not real, and that many
people reporting they have
whiplash are just trying to
get a settlement or payment
from the insurance company.
Fraud has been estimated
at less than 10% of all MVC
claims, and can be spotted
by a physician experienced
in treating these types of
injuries. The threshold for
potential injury in a MVC
has been documented
to be under 5mph and
is dependent on risk
factors of the person in the
car, (age, body position,
presence of other diseases
or conditions, etc.) and on
something called (delta
V), or change of velocity.
Change of velocity depends
on the relative masses and
stiffness of the cars involved.
LOW SPEED
COLLISIONS
One of the most common
misperceptions in motor
vehicle collisions is that
car damage is related to
occupant injury. It appears
to be common sense that if
the car is damaged more,
then the occupant is more
likely to be injured, right?
Wrong. Every high quality
study that has been done
to test the idea that car
damage equals occupant
injury has proved that no
relationship exists. The
reason is due to the fact
that at lower speeds, cars
tend to bounce, or spring off
of each other, transferring
energy to the occupants. In
higher speed collisions, cars
crumple, and the crumpling
absorbs energy from the
collision, and decreases the
change of velocity (delta V),
decreasing the probability of
injury. There is not a single
research study that shows
a relationship between car
damage and occupant
injury, not one. If there was
a relationship, then everyone
whose car is totaled would
be more severely injured,
and we know that people
walk away from serious car
damage collisions where
their car is totaled every day.

INJURIES MORE
THAN WHIPLASH
How many people are
involved in motor vehicle
collisions that are told,
You have a little whiplash,
take some Tylenol and
you should be better in a
few days? This scenario
happens thousands of time
per day across the country.
Granted, in the emergency
room they are trying to save
your life if you are dying,
so they tell you to follow-
up with a physician. Your
primary care physician will
do everything they can to
help you, but many peoples
pain will go away in the
short-term, only to return
when they try to work, clean,
play with their children,
participate in recreational
sports, or exert themselves
physically. Why then, does
back pain frequently return
after the initial soreness from
a whiplash injury is gone?
SPINAL
LIGAMENT
INJURIES
A sprain is an injury to a
ligament that results in a
degree of tearing. A spinal
ligament sprain is the most
common diagnosis in a
MVC, but spinal ligaments
are not routinely tested and
measured with stress or
bending x-rays (gold standard
for diagnosis) due to the
tediousness of measuring the
position of every vertebra by
hand. Computer technology
now allows physicians to very
accurately (with less than
2% error) quickly measure
spinal sprain injuries. We
have a board certied medical
radiologist perform all of our
spinal ligament tests. Spinal
sprains are permanent injuries
that can cause spinal joints to
become loose, and can result
in signicant long-term pain
and spinal arthritis. Spinal
sprains can carry a whole
person impairment rating
according the AMA Guides
to Impairment 5th edition of
up to 25%. Assessment of
the degree of spinal ligament
sprain is something everyone
should demand when
injured in a MVC, no matter
the amount of car damage.
Dont take the chance of
suffering with pain for a
lifetime, and get your spinal
ligaments checked if you are
in a car crash.

READERS CHOICE
Brandon Watson,
The Wheelchair Place,
Certied Aging in Place Specialist.
Caring for loved ones
who require assistance
with activities of daily
living and/or support for
a disease or disability,
such as oxygen needs or
mobility assistance, can be
extremely stressful for both
the caregiver and person
requiring assistance.
With the high costs
associated with medical
care, caregivers can
become overwhelmed
quickly, especially when
trying to understand
Medicare/Medicaid
and other insurance
requirements and
reimbursement plans. Once
you determine the nancial
aspects of the costs of care
needed, then you must
consider the many options
available within your means
to provide the care.
When considering the
options for providing the
necessary care, many
people may think that
moving into an assisted
living or long term facility
is the best option. It may
cost $3000.00 to $5000.00
per month to have a loved
one stay in an assisted
living facility. In comparison,
home modications and
obtaining appropriate
assistive devices for use in
the home may seem costly
to begin with, but will prove
to be less costly over time.
The best option for most
people, is to remain as
independent as possible,
ideally in their own home.
Depending on the individual
needs, there are options
for support utilizing home
medical equipment and
home modications. There
are numerous medical
equipment providers who
can evaluate and provide
items ranging from oxygen
supplies, hospital beds, lift
chairs, walkers, wheelchairs,
bedside commodes, shower
chairs, etc. to an endless
number of assistive devices
like grabbers, dressing
assistive devices, and
countless others.
For those who are fortunate
enough to be able to
remain in their own home,
there are numerous options
for home modications
to support their individual
needs. Kitchens can
be remodeled to allow
increased accessibility to
sinks, ranges, cabinets,
etc. Bathrooms are one of
the most common areas
to be modied. Bathroom
safety is a signicant
concern for elderly people.
Bathroom falls can cause
debilitating injuries to many
older adults. Therefore,
adding grab bars, widening
doors and pathways, and
providing shower chairs
and commodes are found
to be very benecial.
Another option available for
assistance with bathing is to
replace an existing bathtub/
shower with a walk-in tub or
accessible shower. When
staying in their own home
is not feasible, caregivers
can consider having their
loved one move into the
caregivers home. Again,
home medical equipment
and home modications
can help.
When searching for a home
care provider, you want to
nd an accredited company
with a strong track record
in the community for
providing quality products
and services. An accredited
company means that they
must demonstrate to an
accrediting agency that
they possess the personnel,
resources, training,
experience, expertise and
regulatory understanding
to provide quality medical
equipment and services
to patients. There are few
companies in the area that
are accredited and have
the ability to provide all
your equipment needs, as
well as being competent
to address any home
modication needs you
may face. Remember that
it is denitely worth your
efforts to do your homework
to ensure your loved one
experiences the highest
quality of life possible.

For decades, people have
turned to diet soft drinks
as a healthier alternative
to regular soft drinks.
However, consuming diet
soda on a regular basis
may have some serious
health ramications,
including weight gain.
It may seem counterintuitive
to suggest that diet sodas
may be causing people to
gain weight, particularly
because these sodas are
commonly consumed by
people who are trying to
lose weight. However,
articial sweeteners found
in some diet sodas may
increase a person's risk
of obesity. It's not entirely
what you are eating that
can cause weight gain but
what the body thinks it is
eating (or drinking) that
plays a role.

with chronic illnesses. As a
result, palliative care makes
sense for a wider variety of
people, particularly those
burdened by repeated
visits to the hospital or
emergency room.
In addition, palliative
care has matured into a
distinct sub-specialty of
its own referred to as
palliative medicine and
is becoming better known
alongside more familiar
elds like cardiology and
nephrology. This growth
has helped give rise to
medical services like Life
Transitions, which have
seen the need to serve
a more diverse cross-
section of patients and to
assist them with symptom
management and complex
medical decisions.
Life Transitions, likened to a
traveling medical practice,
doesnt treat patients at a
doctors ofce. Rather, it
comes to them wherever
they call home, saving
them from the hassles of
a difcult trip out. Its an
excellent option for people
who have trouble dealing
with physical exertion.
And, its especially useful
for managing needs
related to heart problems,
pneumonia, chronic
obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), and other
acute medical issues.
Initial consultations with a
Life Transitions physician or
nurse practitioner are easily
set up with a phone call.
First-time meetings will
gather information to
determine the potential
benets of an ongoing
regimen. If treatment is
advised, a program of care
will be implemented to
best meet patient needs.
Moreover, Life Transitions
services are coordinated with

Payment for Life Transitions

There are two factors at play
with regard to the articial
sweetener conundrum.
First, The University of
Texas Health Science
Center in San Antonio has
researched the potential link
between obesity and articial
sweeteners. Researchers
have found that something
in the chemical structure of
these sweeteners alters the
way the brain processes the
neurotransmitter serotonin. In
addition to helping with sleep,
mood and other functions in
the body, serotonin helps tell
the body when it is full. When
natural foods and sugars
are consumed, serotonin
signals to the brain to turn
off your body's appetite.
However, articial sweeteners
may prolong the release of
serotonin, and your appetite
remains in full force long after
it should have abated.
Another component of
articial sweeteners,
particularly aspartame, is
that these chemicals can
trick the body into thinking it
has, in fact, consumed sugar.
That triggers the pancreas to
produce the insulin needed
to regulate blood-glucose
levels. It also causes the
body to store the glucose
as fat. This can lead to low
blood sugar, which may
cause you to eat
a sugary treat in response.
Having diet soda or eating
a sugarless item once in a
while won't create any long-
term effects.
But repeatedly relying on
articial sweeteners could
affect appetite and change
blood sugar levels for good.
These aren't the only
consequences to diet
soda and other beverages.
Drinking diet soda regularly
may affect cardiovascular
health. According to the
American Heart Association,
research presented at
the American Stroke
Association's International
Stroke Conference found
people who drink diet soda
every day have a 61 percent
higher risk of vascular events
than those who reported no
soda consumption.
Regular soda isn't a
better alternative. It can
contribute to weight gain
and cardiovascular issues
as well as an increased
risk for diabetes. A 2011
review published in the
journal Circulation stated
that a positive association
has been shown between
sugar-sweetened soft drink
consumption and weight gain
in both children and adults.
Nutritionists and doctors have
advised that instead of adding
articial sweeteners to water
and other beverages, avor
them with lemon or lime juice.
Instead of drinking diet soda,
opt for unsweetened tea or
plain water.
Although diet soda may seem
a likely option to help curb
calories and prevent weight
gain, such beverages may
actually be having an adverse
effect on a person's weight.

HOW TO GET
GOING WITH
GRAZING
A healthy breakfast of oatmeal and
fresh fruit is a good breakfast for
men and women adopting grazing
as their approach to diet.
Eating healthy is a goal for
many people. For some,
altering what they eat is all
it takes to shed those extra
pounds and improve their
overall health, while others
nd changing what they
eat isn't helping them reach
their goals.
One option that has its
share of supporters and
detractors is grazing, which
involves eating ve or six
smaller portions throughout
the day instead of the more
widely accepted diet of
eating three square meals
per day. Those who stand
by grazing claim it keeps
a person's metabolism
going all day, helping to
burn more calories while
encouraging men and
women to eat smaller
portions. Those who
question grazing point to
studies questioning its
efcacy, namely that it does
not have the calorie-burning
effects its supporters
suggest. In fact, researchers
in the United Kingdom have
said eating throughout the
day (a standard grazing
diet has men and women
eating ve to six meals per
day, with three to four hour
intervals between meals)
undermines the body's
ability to burn fat.
The debate over grazing
does not gure to go
away anytime soon, as
many people have found
it a successful way to lose
weight and get healthier
while many others have
found it ineffective. For
those who want to give it a
shot, consider the following
advice.
CHOOSE
HEALTHY
FOODS
Grazing can only be
effective if you choose
healthy foods. Snacking
on foods like chocolate or
potato chips every three
to four hours is a recipe
for disaster regardless of
portion size. When grazing,
choose foods that are low
in fat and high in nutrients.
Avoid sugary
foods as well as those that
are high in sodium. Foods
that are strong sources
of protein and complex
carbohydrates, including
chicken breasts, sh, low-fat
dairy products and whole
grains, will help you feel full
and keep you feeling that
way until the next time to
eat rolls around.
DON'T SKIP
BREAKFAST
A healthy breakfast is
an essential element of
successful grazing. If you
skip breakfast, you're more
likely to overeat, which
could establish a domino
effect of poor eating as
the day goes on. A simple
breakfast, such as a bowl of
cereal with fat-free or low-fat
milk or some oatmeal with
berries mixed in, is all it
takes to start the day off

on the right foot.
STICK TO A
SCHEDULE
When grazing, meals
should be eaten every three
to four hours. If you
stray from that schedule,
you could wind up eating
larger portions or more
meals than you should
be consuming. Stick to your
schedule and remember
the portions are supposed
to be smaller, so you should
not feel skittish about
pulling a snack out at a
meeting in the ofce or if
you have company over at
your house.
PREPARE
MEALS IN
ADVANCE
A problem many people
encounter when they rst
begin to graze is the lack
of availability of smaller-
portioned meals and
snacks. Large portions and
snacks with no nutritional
value are the norm, so
nding smaller meals and
healthy snacks when you're
away from home will be
difcult. The best way
to counter that problem
is to prepare meals in
advance and take them with
you. Cook enough food for
the week over the weekend
and store it in easily
transportable containers.
In addition, bring snacks
with you to the ofce so
you aren't forced to eat
unhealthy fare between
meals.
The topic of grazing is one
that continues to inspire
debate, but men and
women who want to lose
weight and keep the weight
off should consider grazing
as a healthy and potentially
effective option.

Women may sigh in relief
because they won't have
to make the yearly trek to
the gynecologist or family
practitioner for a Pap test
any longer. New information
from medical groups
states that by having pap
smears in combination with
a human papillomavirus
(HPV) test, many women
can safely spread out
testing by ve years.
Recently, advice on having
cervical cancer screenings
has varied from medical
expert to medical expert.
Many advise women to
get screened every one to
three years. Now the U.S.
Preventative Services Task
Force, which published a
new set of guidelines in the
Annals of Internal Medicine,
state that by undergoing
both a Pap smear and
an HPV test together,
which has been dubbed
"co-testing," women ages
30 to 65 who have had
negative results can wait
another ve years before
the next test. The American
Cancer Society is another
organization issuing these
revised guidelines. Experts
advise that this is the
rst time that co-testing
has been suggested and
widely pushed, although
some doctors have been
doing co-testing on their
own for years.
The change was based on
information that showed
more frequent testing for
cervical cancer did not
dramatically lower the
numbers of those at risk.
Although the tests are
safe, fertility risks abound
if further testing and
procedures are done as
the result of a positive Pap
test, which can sometimes
be inaccurate. Researchers
have also found that many
cases of cervical cancer
are linked to HPV. Because
cellular changes triggered
from HPV are slow-moving,
it is not vital to have annual
testing. It is possible to nd
and treat the cancer before
it becomes dangerous,
even if 10 years have
passed, says George
Sawaya, M.D., professor in
the University of California,
San Francisco, Department
of Obstetrics, Gynecology
and Reproductive Sciences.
Although the guidelines are
in place, many women may
continue to have annual
Pap smears, particularly
because they are used
to them and don't want
to risk their health. Those
who do not rely on their
gynecologists as their
primary care providers may
be more apt to wait longer
intervals between testing.
The Pap smear is named
after George Papanicolaou,
a Greek doctor who
created the test in 1943 and
suggested it could provide
crucial early detection of
cervical and uterine cancer.
Pap tests became routine
in 1955 and have reduced
cervical cancer deaths by
around 75 percent.
Women who are uncertain
about waiting longer than
a year between Pap tests
can discuss their concerns
with their gynecologists or
family doctors. Together
they can weigh the pros
and cons of adopting a
new schedule for cervical
cancer screenings.
Women may be able to wait longer between Pap tests.

42 Hickory Morganton SPOTLIGHT ON HEALTH
Dieters are often aware of
metabolism and its effect
on an individual's weight.
Metabolism is a process that
serves a host of important
functions, including
converting food and drink
into energy and using
energy to construct certain
components of cells.
For the perpetual dieter,
metabolism can be a
natural-born enemy, a
process that simply isn't
fast enough for dieters to
lose weight. Even more
frustrating, a person's
metabolism can hinge on
genetics and gender. People
may inherit a speedy or slow
metabolism. Gender plays a
large role considering men
have a tendency to burn
more calories than women,
even while resting. Those
who inherited a speedy
metabolism are often the
people who can seemingly
eat whatever they choose
without gaining a pound.
But gaining a faster
metabolism isn't just for
men or those who inherited
a speedier metabolism
at birth. In fact, there are
several healthy ways to
speed up metabolism.
PACK ON SOME
MUSCLE
People with more muscle
tend to have a higher resting
metabolic rate. That's
because muscle burns more
calories than fat. According
to the American Council on
Exercise, each pound of fat
burns just two calories per
day, while various estimates
suggest each pound of
muscle burns between
35 to 50 calories per day.
Those gures might seem
insignicant, but they add
up over time and someone
with signicant muscle can
burn considerably more
calories than someone
without. Employ resistance
training to build muscle,
as such training activates
muscles all over the body,
increasing your daily
metabolic rate as a result.
EMPHASIZE
INTENSITY
Daily exercise is great,
but high-intensity daily
exercise will prove more
effective at speeding up
your metabolism. Low- or
moderate-intensity workouts
don't pack the same punch
as high-intensity workouts,
which produce a longer
increase in resting metabolic
rate. Sign up for a Zumba(R)
or spin class at your gym,
both of which are the kind of
high-intensity cardiovascular
workout that can speed up
your metabolism.
HEALTHY
WAYS TO
SPEED
UP YOUR
METABOLISM
Lifting weights
and staying
hydrated are two
ways to speed up
your metabolism.

EAT MORE
PROTEIN.
Protein can serve many
purposes for people trying
to lose weight. Protein has a
tendency to make you feel
full when you eat it, reducing
the likelihood that you will
overeat. Turkey, low-fat dairy
products, sh, nuts and
beans are great sources of
protein, which should not be
all you eat but can be used
as a periodic replacement
for other foods that may
slow down your metabolism.
STAY HYDRATED
Your metabolism will likely
slow down if you allow
yourself to get dehydrated.
When the body does not
have enough water, several
of its functions, including its
ability to burn calories, slow
down. Muscles are roughly
70 percent water, so if they
are not fully hydrated they
cannot generate energy,
affecting your metabolism.
Staying hydrated is as easy
as drinking enough water
throughout the day.
Many people feel they
were either gifted at birth
with a fast metabolism or
doomed from the start with
a slow metabolism. But an
individual's metabolism is
not set in stone, and there
are a host of healthy ways
men and women can speed
up their metabolism.

A quick trip to the
grocery store, lling up
with gas, working out
at the gym and doing
laundry all everyday
activities but ones
that can make you and
your loved ones sick.
By keeping these germ
hotspots on your radar
you can help keep
yourself and your loved
ones healthy. Washing
your hands, covering
your cough and staying
home when you're
sick are three basic
techniques to slow
the spread of germs.
Using sanitizing wipes
and hand sanitizer
can make your illness
prevention even more
effective, especially in
germ hotspots places
where germs tend to
congregate and spread.
Brian Bechtol, a
physician assistant
at Urgent Care of
Mountain View, lists
some germ hotspots
and how to prevent
the spread of disease-
causing viruses and
bacteria such as
salmonella and E. coli.
YOUR HOME
Germs can congregate
on many everyday
home surfaces, such
as remotes, door
handles, light switches
and countertops. Make
sure to wipe down hard
surfaces frequently with
a disinfectant.
Dirty laundry can
also be a haven for
germs. Using hot
water and bleach when
washing bedclothes,
undergarments and
towels can make a
difference.
In the kitchen, run
sponges through
the dishwasher or
microwave them for
one to two minutes to
kill germs, and never
use a sponge to wipe
surfaces contaminated
by meat. Sinks should
be cleaned with bleach
once a week, and
dish rags and towels
should be changed
out and laundered with
bleach daily. Cutting
boards should always
be washed thoroughly
between uses and you
should have a separate
board for meats.
In the bathroom,
always ush with the lid
down and color code
towels so each family
member has his or
her own to help keep
germs from spreading
between them.
Toothbrushes should
be sanitized in the
dishwasher weekly.
Choosing a liquid hand
soap instead of a bar
soap can also cut down
on the spread of germs.
Many women place
their purses on
countertops and tables
when they arrive home.
Those same purses are
taken into businesses,
placed on oors and in
shopping carts. When
theyre put on a counter
or table at home, they
can spread the germs
theyve come into
contact with elsewhere.
PUBLIC
RESTROOMS
While it may seem
like a given that some
public restrooms are
germ harbors, many
people do not practice
careful hand washing,

even in public places.
The single most important
thing you can do to stop the
spread of germs and keep
healthy is frequent hand
washing, said Bechtol.
THE GYM
Gyms generally keep
equipment clean, but
if you're hopping on
the treadmill right after
someone else, it never hurts
to use a sanitizing wipe or
spray, which most facilities
keep readily available.
SHOPPING
Always try to use a
sanitizing wipe before
touching a grocery cart.
Many stores offer these at
the entrance, usually next
to where you pick up your
cart. Once you're done
shopping, use a hand
sanitizer to kill germs you
may have picked up from
the cart, shelves or items in
the store.
Railings, while keeping you
safe on an escalator or the
stairs, have been touched
by countless others, and
can collect an array of
germs. Use a hand sanitizer
whenever possible after
touching these surfaces.
Same goes for benches,
drinking fountains and door
handles. Some malls have
even started providing hand
sanitizer for their guests.
AT WORK
Desks, phones and
keyboards and accessories
can quickly become germ
magnets. Use a sanitizing
wipe on them frequently
and make sure to wash
your hands whenever
possible. When youre sick,
cover coughs and sneezes
with tissues or, in a pinch,
use the bend of your elbow.
Need to ll up with gas on
your way home? If you carry
sanitizing wipes with you,
wipe down the pump handle
and buttons. After lling your
tank, use hand sanitizer.
There are so many bugs
going around right now
causing upper respiratory
and gastrointestinal
infections, Bechtol said. It
is especially important to
practice good hygiene and
preventive care.

Cancer has surpassed heart
disease as the foremost cause
of death for people in North
America. A cancer diagnosis
can be life-altering. Although
there are many successful
treatments for cancer, there is
no denitive cure. Plus, certain
cancers continue to be more
ominous than others.
According to the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention, there are more
than 100 types of cancer,
characterized by their location
in the body and abnormal
cell growth in that area.
Millions of dollars have been
raised and spent on cancer
research and nding new
and innovative methods of
treatment. Although the ve-
year survival rate for those with
cancer in the United States
has improved considerably
over the last three decades,
the National Cancer Institute
still lists many cancers as
the primary killers of many
people. Here is the most
recent classication of the ve
cancers that claim the most
lives each year.
1
LUNG CANCER: Lung
cancer is responsible for
more deaths than any other
cancer. Roughly 160,000
people succumb to lung and
bronchial-related cancers
each year. Although it is the
most deadly, it is also the most
preventable, as many cases
of lung cancer are the result
of certain lifestyle choices.
Quitting smoking is the single
most effective way to reduce
your risk of lung cancer.
2
COLORECTAL CANCER:
In 2008, 52,857 Americans
died from colorectal cancer,
says the CDC. Most cases of
colorectal cancer begin with
groupings of small, benign
cells called polyps that over
time become cancerous.
Screening is necessary to
check for cancer of the colon
and rectum, but because
they are embarrassed and
uncomfortable, many people
avoid preventive measures.
3
BREAST CANCER: The
second most common
cancer in women, breast
cancer can affect both sexes.
It is also the most deadly
cancer among women, with
roughly 35 percent of the
cases in the United States
resulting in fatality.
4
PANCREATIC CANCER: The
pancreas aids in digestion
and metabolism. This cancer
is deadly because it is difcult
to detect in its early stages,
as it does not always produce
symptoms and the cancer
tends to progress rapidly.
Pancreatic cancer claims
around 40,000 lives each year.
5
PROSTATE CANCER:
Prostate cancer is exclusive to
men and is the second-leading
cause of cancer deaths among
them, according to the NCI.
This type of cancer forms
in the prostate, a gland that
produces seminal uid that
carries sperm. It is estimated
that 28,000 men will die from
prostate cancer in 2012.
Although many cancers
are fatal, survival rates are
improving. Thousands of
people diagnosed with cancer
beat the odds and go on to
live healthy, disease-free lives.
Certain cancers claim more lives than others.

Fatigue can prove a

Exercise enthusiasts and

EAT BREAKFAST
NO MATTER WHAT
According to a study
published in the
International Journal
of Food Sciences and
Nutrition, a high-ber, high-
carbohydrate breakfast can
increase alertness between
breakfast and lunch, a
period of time during which
many professionals begin
to feel fatigue settling in.
Whole-wheat toast or a
bowl of high-ber cereal
can pack an energetic
punch that lasts all the way
to lunchtime.
CHOOSE
HIGH-ENERGY
SNACKS
One of the problems many
people have when dealing
with fatigue is how they
choose to combat their
feelings of sluggishness.
Eating a candy bar from the
ofce snack machine might
seem like the ideal energy
booster, but a sugar boost
does not last very long.
Chances are your feelings
of fatigue will return sooner
rather than later.
GIVE YOURSELF
A BREAK
Burning the midnight oil
might be necessary, but
failing to take breaks
throughout the day will
likely exasperate any
feelings of fatigue. That's
because taking periodic
breaks throughout the
workday has been proven
to be very effective at
combating fatigue. A study
conducted at Louisiana
State University compared
a trio of different work
schedules for workers who
used a computer. Those
who took brief, frequent
breaks were better at
ghting fatigue and more
productive at work than
those who did not. A short
break of 5 to 10 minutes
can be enough to provide
an immediate energy
boost and fend off feelings
of fatigue.
HIT THE ROAD, JACK
Another way to effectively
ght fatigue is to get
walking. A decades-old
study conducted by a
researcher at California
State University, Long
Beach, found that walking
briskly for 10 minutes

GET BACK TO NORMAL. ENJOY LIFE.
P
A
A healthy diet plays
a signicant role in a
person's overall health.
Without a healthy diet,
men and women are more
susceptible to disease
and other potentially
harmful ailments.
But when many people
think of a healthy diet,
a lack of avor is often
one of the rst things to
come to mind. That's a
common misconception,
as a diet that's healthy
and full of nutrients can
simultaneously be avorful.
In fact, it's easy to enjoy
many of your favorite
dishes in a way that makes
them much healthier.
Oftentimes, a few minor
alterations to a recipe is all
it takes to turn the dish from
high-risk to healthy.
TRIM
THE FAT
No one wants to eat fat,
but fat isn't entirely bad
for you. Fat can help your
body absorb vitamins A,
D, E and K, and replacing
fat with something like
carbohydrates decreases
how much these valuable
vitamins are absorbed.
In addition, dietary fat
releases chemicals in the
brain that make you feel
full, reducing the likelihood
that you will overeat.
Those are just a few of the
benets of dietary fat, which
is an essential element
of a healthy diet. But
overconsumption of dietary
fat can be dangerous, and
many people simply need
to trim some fat from their
diets. One way to do that
is to reduce how much
butter, shortening or oil
you use when cooking. For
some recipes, you may
be able to cut suggested
portions of such ingredients
by half without replacing
them; however, for others,
especially those for baked
goods, these items may
have to be replaced. In
the case of the latter, nd
a suggested alternative to
high-fat items, and only
use half of the high-fat item
listed in the original recipe.
Chances are you won't taste
the difference, but your
body will be better for it.
SUBSTITUTE
HEALTHIER
FARE
Substituting items is
another way to turn
a favorite dish into a
healthier dish without
altering the avor
dramatically, if at all.
For example, instead of
cooking with enriched
pasta, purchase whole-
wheat or whole-grain
Using nonstick cookware when preparing your favorite meals can reduce reliance on oil or butter, cutting fat and calories from your diet.

pastas, which are higher
in ber and lower in
calories. If a recipe calls
for using milk, choose fat-
free milk instead of whole
milk. Doing so reduces
your fat intake by nearly 8
grams per cup.
Recipes can even be
made healthier by simply
cutting back on the main
dish and adding more
vegetables. Instead of using
the recommended amount
of meat or chicken, scale
back and make up for it with
additional vegetables, which
reduces your caloric and fat
intake while adding more
vitamins and minerals to
your diet.
CHANGE YOUR
METHODS
Certain cooking techniques
are healthier than others.
Frying foods or cooking
with fat, oil or salt is not the
healthiest way to prepare
a meal. Some of your
favorite dishes that call for
frying or cooking in oil can
be just as avorful if you
opt for healthier methods
like braising, broiling,
grilling, or steaming. When
recipes call for basting
foods in oil or drippings,
forgo these unhealthy
options and baste foods in
vegetable juice or fat-free
broth instead.
What you use to cook
can also be healthy or
unhealthy. Nonstick
cookware won't require
you to use oil or butter to
keep foods from sticking
to the pan. This reduces
the amount of fat and
calories you will consume,
and you likely won't notice
a difference with regards
to avor.
Men and women who
enjoy food and cooking
their own meals can take
several steps to make
those meals healthier
without sacricing avor.

Dr. Herb saysGo Vegan
Vegan means nothing animal; no meat,
milk, cheese, yogurt, egg, ice cream,
butter. Some people say, If you do
not eat animal, where are you going to
get your protein, calcium, and B-12?
A cow stands all day and eats nothing
but grass, so where does the cow get
protein, calcium, and B-12? It is an es-
tablished fact that a plant based diet is
the healthiest. There is much scientifc
research to support this. More impor-
tantly, a plant based diet was designed
by God for mankind. Vegan is the best
diet. Vegan was the Garden of Eden
diet. Veganis the best waytoeat for pre-
venting cancer and other diseases. The
fact is malnutrition and starvation will
kill about 14 million people this year. If
Americans reduce their intake of meat
by just 10%, the land, water and energy
freed up from growing livestock feed
wouldfeed100millionpeople. Turning
grain into fesh is extremely wasteful.
Twenty vegetarians can be fed on the
amount of land needed to feed one per-
son on a meat-based diet. Another fact:
It takes about 300 gallons of water per
day to produce food for someone who
is totally vegetarian, but it takes more
than 4,000 gallons of water per day to
create the food needed to feed a meat
eater. Meat is dead animal carcass; we
are humans, not crows. The kidneys
of a meat eater must work three times
harder thanthe kidneys of a personwho
eats vegan. It takes meat four times lon-
ger to pass through the digestive tract
thanfruits, grains, beans andvegetables.
The liability to take disease is increased
tenfold by eating meat. Heart attack is
the most common cause of death in
the U.S., killing one person every 45
seconds. The male meat eaters risk of
deathfromheart attackis 50%. The risk
to men who eat no meat is 15%.
Everyone forgets things
from time to time.
Periodically forgetting
where you left your keys
is likely not indicative of
a bad memory. But some
people nd themselves
forgetting things more
frequently, a troubling
development for those who
can't explain their sudden
loss of memory.
Memory loss is often
considered to go
hand-in-hand with aging. As
a person ages, conventional
wisdom suggests memory
will begin to fade. But
sometimes memory loss
has nothing to do with
aging, and a lot to do with
a brain that isn't sharp
because of an unhealthy
lifestyle. The following are a
few ways men and women
can improve their memory.
EASY WAYS
TO IMPROVE
MEMORY
Prioritizing a good night's sleep is one way to improve memory.
GET SOME
SLEEP
Men and women who aren't
getting enough sleep can
almost certainly blame
that lack of shut-eye for at
least some of their memory
loss. When you don't get
enough sleep, your brain's
ability to think critically,
solve problems and even
be creative is compromised
considerably. In addition,
research has shown that
memory-enhancing activities
occur during the deepest
stages of sleep, further
highlighting the importance
of getting a full night of
interruption-free rest.
HIT THE GYM
Exercise is another activity
that can improve memory.
Daily physical exercise
increases the amount of
oxygen that gets to your
brain while reducing the
risk for certain disorders,
including diabetes and
cardiovascular disease,
both of which can lead to
memory loss.
MANAGE
STRESS
EFFECTIVELY
Stress has a host of
negative side effects, not
the least of which is its
impact on your memory.
Chronic stress that goes
untreated can destroy
brain cells and damage
the region of the brain that
deals with the formation
of new memories as well
as the retrieval of older
memories. Numerous
studies have shown that
men and women cite their
career as their primary

source of stress. Since
quitting your job is likely
not an option, nd ways to
manage your stress more
effectively. This may mean
nding a way to make the
most of your time, be it
working more efciently,
emphasizing planning
ahead or even vowing to
stop procrastinating. Other
ways to manage stress
include making time to relax
and recognizing that you
have limits while seeking
the help of others.
MAKE SOME
DIETARY
CHANGES
Diet can also have an impact
on memory. What you eat is
fuel for both your body and
your brain, and a poor diet
can have a negative impact
on your memory. Be sure to
include omega-3 fatty acids,
sources of which include
salmon, tuna and other cold
water fatty sh, in your diet.
Research has shown that
omega-3 fatty acids, which
can also be found in walnuts,
can boost brain power and
possibly reduce your risk for
Alzheimer's disease.
A diet high in saturated fat,
which is found in red meat,
whole milk, butter and
cheese, has been found
to have a negative impact
on memory. Research has
shown that such a diet
increases a person's risk of
developing dementia while
impairing an individual's
ability to concentrate and
remember things.

Alzheimer's disease
affects millions of people
across the globe. In the
United States alone, the
Alzheimer's Association
estimates one in eight
older men and women
has the disease, which is
the sixth-leading cause of
death in the country.
Few families have not been
affected by Alzheimer's
disease, and many relatives
of those with the disease
fully understand the role
family history can play.
Research into the disease
is ongoing, and it's already
yielded valuable information
that may help reduce
the prevalence of this
devastating disease in the
years to come.
One byproduct of
researchers' efforts
is the discovery that
it may be possible to
prevent or delay the
symptoms of Alzheimer's
disease through the
implementation of a
combination of healthy
lifestyle choices. The
following are a few healthy
habits that may help men
and women reduce their
risk for Alzheimer's.
EXERCISE
REGULARLY
A study conducted by
Scottish researchers and
published in the journal
Neurology in 2012 touted
exercise as the most
effective way for adults to
protect their brains from
Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers examined
roughly 700 70-year-old
participants, all of whom
were born in 1936, who were
asked to report their levels
of physical activity. Each
participant then received an
MRI at age 73. Those tests
revealed that the participants
who were more physically
active showed less brain
shrinkage and fewer white
matter lesions, both of which
are indicators of Alzheimer's
disease. In addition, the
Alzheimer's Research &
Prevention Foundation
reports that physical exercise
reduces a person's risk of
developing Alzheimer's by 50
percent and can even slow
further deterioration in those
who have already begun
to develop the cognitive
problems associated with
Alzheimer's. Researchers
continue to study the
relationship between physical
activity and the development
of Alzheimer's diseases, but
the evidence is mounting that
regular exercise, regardless of
a person's age, is a great way
to reduce risk for Alzheimer's.
EAT HEALTHY
What you put into your body
may also reduce your risk
for Alzheimer's disease.
The brain operates at its
best when it is fueled with
a healthy diet that includes
fresh fruit and vegetables,
healthy fats and lean
protein. A heart-healthy diet
is also brain-healthy, and
researchers have found a
potential link between heart
disease and Alzheimer's
disease. Researcher Larry
Sparks of the Sun Health
Research Institute in
Arizona and formerly of
the Kentucky medical
examiner's ofce studied
brain tissues with a goal
of nding early signs of
Alzheimer's disease. He
discovered that those who
had the telltale plaques
of Alzheimer's disease
also had heart disease,
suggesting heart disease
may be a forerunner of brain
diseases like Alzheimer's.
STIMULATE
YOURSELF
MENTALLY
Mental stimulation can
help the brain stay sharp,
and men and women who
nd ways to stay mentally
stimulated can reduce
their risk of developing
Alzheimer's. Embrace
activities that require
communication and
interaction with others,
and nd time for additional
tasks that can stimulate
your brain. These may
include studying a foreign
language, reading, trying
your hand at mentally
stimulating puzzles such
as crosswords or Sudoku,
and other activities that
emphasize organization.
Such activities are
essentially workouts for
your brain that can help it
stay sharp as you age.
REMAIN
SOCIALLY
ACTIVE
Staying socially active into
older adulthood is important
for a variety of reasons, not
the least of which is that
research has indicated the
brain functions better when
men and women are not
isolated from others. Memory
and cognition are stronger
when people remain socially
active and engaged in their
society, so retirees should look
for ways to revive their social
lives as a means to protecting
their brains from the onset of
Alzheimer's or dementia.

DoYou Have Back Pain FromA Car Accident?
Did you Know...
Motor vehicle collisions can cause severe spinal ligament damage that is commonly
missed by doctors?
Spinal ligament injuries can result in life long problems such as chronic pain,
degenerative spinal arthritis and loss of your quality of life. These injuries often
do not cause severe pain, only soreness and pain that commonly goes away
after a fewweeks, only to repeatedlyfare upwhen you try to do something
physical like lift, play with your children or work. Make no mistake, these injuries
can cause long-termpain and impairment for a lifetime.
The NewMRIWhen It Comes To Spinal Sprain
Newcomputer technology nowallows our board certifed medical radiologist
to analyze x-rays of the spine and determine if you have spinal ligament damage.
Your results are graded using the highest standard, the American Medical
Association 5th edition impairment guides. Spinal ligament injuries carry up to
a 28%whole person impairment, and can have very serious short and long
termconsequences to your health. Demand spinal ligament testing if you are
involved in a motor vehicle collision.
Attorneys, Adjusters and the Medical-Legal Arena
Spinal ligament injuries are very serious injuries that must be documented
properly and understood by you, insurance adjusters and attorneys. If you
were involved in a motor vehicle collision and had any soreness in your neck
or lower back, you need to be evaluated to see if computerized spinal ligament
testing is appropriate for you. Dr. Shook personally teaches attorneys and
insurance professionals about spinal ligament injuries because it is an epidemic
problemthat is largely misunderstood and misdiagnosed.
SoWhat CanYou Do?
If you were recently in a motor vehicle collision call our ofce for a consultation to
see if we can help. Dr. Shook is highly trained in the triage, diagnosis and
treatment of motor vehicle collision injuries, and works with a teamof medical
specialists to help you get the care you need. Dr. Shook is currently writing a book
for patients, attorneys and insurance professionals on motor vehicle collision
injuries. Dont put your future health at risk, and get your spine checked.
