First Year Experience Mentor


Overview of the Program
First Year Programs is seeking dedicated, knowledgeable, and charismatic undergraduate students to mentor and co-teach a First Year Experience class with a faculty or staff member. Mentors will play key roles in assisting first-year students with their transitions to UConn and act as a resource to guide students to various opportunities. In addition, mentors will serve as role models whom students should feel comfortable to approach at any time with questions or concerns. This program allows mentors to earn academic credit and simultaneously gain leadership, teaching, and communication skills while helping fellow Huskies.

Who are they?


Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors (as of Fall 2013) who are willing to work cooperatively with both the instructor and the students in a First Year Experience Class Serve for one semester (Fall 2013)

Requirements
Minimum 2.5 Cumulative GPA Enrollment in 3-credit EPSY 3020, which meets Wednesdays from 3:00-5:00 pm during Fall 2013 Ability to communicate effectively with first-year students Demonstrate leadership skills Demonstrate pride in UCONN and ability to share experiences with others Conduct oneself in a professional manner when representing the university Attend summer training on campus August 21-22, 2013 (Please note that if you are planning to be an RA, tour guide, WOW leader, or other such campus leader, this may interfere with those commitments. Attendance all day, both days of FYE Mentor Training is absolutely mandatory.)

Responsibilities
Attend assigned UNIV (previously INTD) 1800, 1810, or 1820 FYE class each week Attend the EPSY 3020 class every Wednesday from 3:00pm-5:00pm Meet weekly with instructor to plan and coordinate class topics and activities Connect students with resources Listen to student issues and meet with them one-on-one

Lead students during in-class activities or help coordinate out-of-class activities Respond to e-mails Check over and keep track of student assignments Help with HuskyCT and manage a personal tab to post resources for the students Present topics and lead discussions relevant to first-year students

SCHEDULING FOR END OF SUMMER/FALL Mandatory Summer Training (all day) on August 21st and 22nd (Wednesday and Thursday) 1 hour per week, FYE Class 2 hours per week, EPSY (Wednesday, 3:00-5:00PM) TIMELINE Friday, March 8th Tuesday, Feb. 12, 8:00 pm Wednesday, Feb. 20 8:00 pm March 25th March 25th-April 5th April 12th April 25th 9:00am4:00pm Applications are due to Rowe CUE 235. Make sure to sign up for an interview time! EPSY 3020: PEER COUNSELING FOR FYE MENTORS

Course Description This course will focus on the development of those communication skills which are necessary for effective peer and paraprofessional counseling. Several theories of interpersonal communication, experiential learning, and self-discovery will also be covered. Examples of Topics Covered

Facilitating discussions Giving presentations Preparing lesson plans Student/Mentor relationships Sexual harassment Suicide prevention Global Citizenship/Diversity
