Hello and thank you for being our Family Day Distance Learning Ambassador! Did you know that kids who eat dinner with their parents at least four times weekly are less likely to drink and use drugs? Family Day promotes this simple act.

About Family Day: National Family Day is on September, 24th. Its a great opportunity for families to eat dinner together and protect kids from substance use and abuse. Parental engagement is the single most potent weapon in preventing substance abuse among youth. Family Day emphasizes regular family activities to encourage parent- child communication.

Whats My Job? Your job is to take the Family Day message to your school and get each student and their family to eat dinner together on or about September, 24th. The attachments will provide you with all necessary tools to promote the campaign and get participation.

Whats in it for me and my School? Informed Families will highlight your schools participation in our newsletter and on our website. In addition, results from your schools participation will be reported to you and the Principal. By implementing this campaign, parents and their kids are brought together to strengthen the family bond. Your promotion of this special event can mean the difference in the life of a child who may otherwise be affected by drug or alcohol abuse. The statistics dont lie: Dinner makes a difference!

Family Day Activity Guide

Kids who eat dinner regularly with their family are less likely to engage in risky and unhealthy behaviors. Family dinners can be a time of connection, communication and fun. It can also be an hour of stress if you are doing all the planning, cooking and cleaning yourself. So whether you have made a recent decision to engage in regular family dinners or have always had family dinners, read this message for helpful and new information. Remember to empower other family members, become a team, turn dinner time into something everyone looks forward to. o Dinner time should be electronic free. This means: NO: cell phones, IPods, computers, electronic games, TV or hand held devices (Moms and Dads this applies to you too). Make a pact not to answer the door or telephone during dinner time. o Dinner time should be a positive experience. Discussions about discipline, broken rules, arguments etc, should take place at a different place and time. o When age appropriate, let kids help with the meal preparation, kids like to contribute, make sure you express appreciation for their help and let them know that as part of a family everyone should contribute. o One day a week, during dinner, plan the meals for the next week or next few days.kids should contribute to the menu! o Assign a table clearer and dishwasher/loader, rotate with the table setter. o Have a special night when you serve something just once that week: example: Sundaes on Sunday (kids get to create their own ice cream Sundae) or New Recipe night where you cook a new recipe for everyone to try. o Assign a table setter, let him/her choose the dishes, tablecloth, centerpiece etc., o During dinner: sit together at the table or take dinner outside when the weather permits or have picnics on the family room floor.
