16 . TONE (8) PLAGAL 4 4TH OF TRIODION CHEESEFARE-FORGIVENESS SUNDAY 17 MARCH 2013

On Sunday of Forgiveness Cheesefare Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh

After these weeks of preparation during which we have examined our soul, our lifestyle and all our relationships in the Sight of and according to the Judgement of God, we enter into the JOY of Lent, which is a new beginning of Life - a new time - when we will no longer be reminded of our own sins we will no longer be confronted by images in Parables of Fall and Repentance - but instead we will Commemorate certain Saints who began their lives just as we began our life: frail, weak, vacillating, but who - by the Grace and Power of God - have become what they are: Righteous men, women and children whom we can venerate, in whom we can rejoice, who can be set as good examples for us to follow and to imitate - and to whom we can turn for their Intercessory Prayers for our Eternal Salvation. Tonight we begin this revitalising Spiritual Journey that leads us from our sinful condition - which we have recognised and repented - into a new time - into the Glorious Resurrection of Christ, which is the beginning of our own Eternal Life. We will set off on this Journey like the people of Israel who departed from Egypt to go to the Promised Land: still frail, still burdened, still incompletely free. However, we will do so not by looking back at ourselves, but by looking towards our Living, Gracious God Who is Eternal Life and Salvation being guided and encouraged by those who have been Victorious by the Power and Grace of God. We receive inspiration from these Holy Saints that will enable us to achieve our final Victory to achieve the Newness of Life, which is our Holy Calling and Gods Divine Promise. We will have to journey together, but we must not be deluded, discouraged or misguided for it may be difficult for some of us. Yet, if we encourage each other along the way, we will reach our Holy Destination. This is similar to the Israelites while they travelled through the wilderness and desert not always obedient to God, not always loyal to one another, and yet, needing each other in order to reach the Promised Land. So, let us start now; let us think of the Feast of next Sunday: the Triumph of Orthodoxy, which is not the triumph of the Orthodox Christians over anyone else - it is the Triumph of God and His Divine Truth over those who commit Apostasy and heresy. people. It is the Triumph of God in the lives of all people. And then, each week, let us look at one Saint after another, and pay careful attention to what they teach us: St Gregory Palamas, St John of the Ladder, St Mary of Egypt and all those Righteous Saints and Holy Martyrs who followed in the Footsteps of Christ. Finally, we will reach the point of our Spiritual Journey when we must focus our entire attention on our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ: what He is, what He has done for us and what He is doing for us. We must forget the unimportant matters of our life during the course of the next few weeks and instead we must joyfully and most gratefully, turn our attention only on God and all His Goodness. During Holy Week, we strengthen ourselves with renewed Spiritual Determination and renunciation of our egotism and selfishness in order to humbly contemplate our Lord God Who became Man and Enlightened us directly with His Divine Truth, so that we may worthily receive His Eternal Salvation and Life. As we celebrate His Glorious Resurrection at Holy Pascha, let us make a concerted effort to ceaselessly express our Eternal Gratitude for His Great Mercy and infinite Divine Love.

By sincerely persevering in Prayer and Supplication, let us suppress the passions of our soul; let us avert the swellings of the flesh; thus lightened, let us set off on the Journey to Things Above, where the Choirs of Angels in unbroken song sing Praises to the Undivided Trinity, to see the irresistible Beauty of the Master. O Son of God and Giver of Life: we who set our Hope of Thee Entreat: make us worthy of dancing with the Hosts of Angels, O Christ, at the Intercessions of Thy Mother, the Apostles, Martyrs, and all the Saints.

And believing, he cried aloud: Glory to Thee, O Christ God our Saviour, for Thou Save all people, inasmuch as Thou art the Fathers Radiance.
