of the resignaon of the Pope Ive been intrigued by the amount of coverage this courageous act on the part of Benedict XVI has received in the secular press.
I have been intrigued because the secular media, so oen seen as indierent to religion and faith (except for the sensaonalist dimensions thereof) have focussed so much me, energy and space on not only the fact of the announcement itself, but on what will happen next: the conclave, the elecon, the future of the Church, etc.
It has, to my mind, been quite amusing.
Regardless of what happens next, the life of the Church will connue. Mass will sll be celebrated, the poor will sll be assisted, the school and health care systems operated by the Church will connue to educate and assist the sick. The day to day mission of the Church is not dependent upon who occupies the Chair of Peter.
What the coverage of the pending vacancy in the papacy in the secular media tells me is that the secular media sll do not grasp the nature of Church, do not understand that it is not a worldwide organisaon that cannot funcon with our chief execuve. They fail, in my esmaon, to grasp that the Church exists primarily as an organisaon for its own sake, but rather for the sake of the Kingdom that Jesus came to preachand which all the members of the Church are called to be part of from the day of their bapsm.
Having said that, lets connue to pray for those who will elect a new occupant of the Chair of Peter. But lets also connue to be about the daily work of proclaiming the good news of Jesus.

Responsorial Psalm Response: With the Lord there is mercy, and fullness of redempon.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be aenve to the voice of my pleading.
If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive? But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you.
My soul is waing for the Lord, I count on his word. My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak.
Because with the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redempon, Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.

When we process forward to receive Communion, we are asked by the Australian Bishops to adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other form of reverence, including a genuecon, should be avoided. Communion by selfinncon is never permied, since we never take Communion but rather receive Communion. Please refrain from this inappropriate acon. We regret that we do not have the physical facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and would respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to receive Communion while in procession, since this is contrary to the nature of the Communion procession. Your cooperaon with this request is very much appreciated.
