Metallic Bonding

Metallic Bond
 A bond between the positively charged metal
ions and the electrons that flow freely
throughout the metal
 Because the valence shells overlap, the
valence electrons move freely from one ion,
to the next, to the next, etc.
 All ions then feel like they have a complete
valence shell
 If you downloaded the PowerPoint version,
the next three slides will have animation that
shows the concept
Usually, we think of an electron belonging to one atom
Because of the overlap, the valence electron can move
freely to other atoms
The process happens at lightning fast speeds (electricity
IS the flow of electrons)
