Question 3- What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback is a massive part of our project, and is the factor that shows whether we were successful or not in the delivery of our products. In the research and planning stages of the task, we used questionnaires to gather opinions about ideas that we had proposed. In the evaluation, I also thought that this would be a good idea too. I have completed audience feedback through the use of questionnaires and individual interviews. We ensured that everyone who took part in the 18 questionnaires distributed was in our target audience (16-24) and in the 3 interviews I conducted. Here is part of the questionnaire that we used in the evaluation, with questions like: Did you learn anything from our documentary. We feel this type of Yes/No question would give us the best opportunity to really evaluate our products, directly from our target audience.

Documentary Results
Did you learn anything from our documentary? In this question, we asked our audience whether or not that they felt they had learnt anything from our documentary. 15 out of the 18 people asked said that they felt they had. The definition of a documentary is as follows: A movie or a television or radio program that provides a factual record or report This is a great result for us, as it seems we have delivered a factual report to our target audience, a key part of a genuine documentary piece.

Did you feel that our documentary resembles a real life product? Following on from this, we then wanted to know whether our product looked authentic, and it looks like it did. 94% of the sample asked said they thought it resembled a real life product. This is a great result for us, as it shows that the hard work we put into the research and planning paid off, as we made a product that looks like a real documentary.

Yes No

Did you feel the use of editing was relevant to what was on the screen at that point? The next thing we asked on the questionnaire is how relevant they thought the editing was, in relation to the current on screen events. Here, 83% answered Yes, 11% answered Occasionally and 6% answered No. This is another good result for us, but with 17% of the sample saying that they thought the use of editing was only good occasionally, or not at all, perhaps in the future, we would dedicate more time to the consistency of the editing, perhaps spending more time getting to know the uses of the programme final cut express better.

Yes Occasionally No

What was the most effective part of the documentary for you that resembled media conventions? For this question, instead of asking for a yes/no answer, we decided to ask our target audiences direct opinions, and here are 3 of the quotes that were stated. Given are 3 good codes of existing documentaries that people feel is reflected well in our own product, and we feel this is a good result.

Montage of fast food restaurants The use of cutaway during the interview Use of facts

Did you find that the sound levels were consistent throughout? Here is a question that I feel demands the most concern. We asked our sample whether they feel that the sound levels our consistent throughout. With 23% saying Yes, 33% saying No, and 44% saying maybe, it seems that this is the question that has the most divide of opinion. Because of this, it shows that this is the area of the documentary that, should we do it again, would require the biggest rethink. Perhaps, we could spend an increased amount of time looking at the sound levels, and ensuring that the exported version is more accurate.

Yes Maybe No

Here are some of the results found from our documentary. I am happy with the majority of the aforementioned results, but think that the results show improvements could be made. The biggest area for improvement it seems is the sound levels. If I was to look at the documentary and pick out the exact problem, it would be the clarity of some of the interviews. We needed to higher the volume, and decrease the background noise. Despite this, I think it is good to find flaws in our product, because it means should we do it again, we would know where to focus our time.

Did you find the quality of the documentary was consistent throughout?
16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Yes No Series1

Here, the results show that the quality of the documentary was consistent throughout. 14 out of the 18 people asked said that they thought it was consistent throughout. This shows we have paid close attention to our research, ensuring that we looked at codes and conventions accurately to try and create a genuine product. However, the fact that 4 people disagreed is something that we can try and work on in the future.

Did you feel the backing track was relevant to the topic?
In this question we asked whether people felt that the backing track was relevant to the documentary. This is a more important thing than it first comes across, as the backing tract is an important code in many existing documentaries.

Yes No

Did you find the interviews interesting and informative?

16 14 12 10 8 6 4 2 0 Yes No Series1

Here, we asked people whether they thought that the interviews were interesting. We personally thought that our interviewees were relevant. This shows that we put in a good amount of work tracking down good interviewees to interview, people that are relevant to the subject field- of fitness and health.

Radio Trailer Results

Did you find the trailer informative enough to convince you to watch the documentary? This was the first question we asked on the questionnaire regarding the trailer to see whether people thought it was informative enough to make you watch the documentary. It seems that the results were conclusive- 17 out of the 18 asked said they would watch the documentary on the basis of the radio trailer. This is a positive result on the basis of the definition of a trailer. Advertise (a movie or program) in advance by broadcasting excerpts or details. If we have met the definition of a trailer, then it shows we have made an authentic looking trailer

Did you find the sound levels to be consistent throughout? Here is a question we asked regarding the sound levels in the radio trailer. 72% of those asked said that they thought that the sound levels werent consistent throughout. This is a poor result for us, and something that needs to be addressed. I can predict that because we didnt pan centre the audio in final cut, this is the root of these problems. So this is something we would focus on in the future, should we redo the project.

Did the trailer sound professional compared with real trailers? Again, it seems that an area that shows the need for improvement is the sound levels. In this question half of those asked said that the trailer didnt sound professional in comparison to existing products. Again, this would be something we would need to change. I think that there are many components that do indeed work with the product; however, some of the audio levels, as stated are a little inconsistent. We know, that if we were going to produce this product again, we would need to focus a little more on the consistency of sound.

Magazine Results
Did you feel that the magazine resembled a real life product? To the magazine, in this question we asked our audience to say whether the magazine resembled a real life product. As is clear, everyone who took the questionnaire considered the magazine to look like a lifelike product. From this, we can suggest that research and planning in this area was particularly strong, and it allowed us to really get the magazine right, in terms of the correct codes and connotations used.

Did you feel that the images were to a good standard and appropriately used throughout? This is another strong result regarding the outcome of the magazine. With 89% of the sample saying they thought the images used throughout were a good standard, is a very good positive. This means the images that were captured were good, and the placing of them on the page is also strong.

Yes No

Is there any elements that you feel could be improved?

Too much white space Too many images

Here were some comments that were raised, suggesting that despite some positive scores, the magazine can be improved. For example, Someone though that there was too much white space at the top of the page. This is a very fair comment, and maybe something that could have been addressed very easily by perhaps slightly enlarging the title. Another person suggested that there are too many images on the article. This too, is a suggestion that we must take notice of. To observe the rule of thirds is a key convention of all magazine articles, and perhaps we need to revise our knowledge of this rule, and apply it better in the future.

Did you find that the article/interview was relevant to the documentary?

Here is probably the best result of our findings. 100% of sample of 18 thought that the article was relevant to the documentary. This means that Sam, who wrote the article did a very good job researching existing articles, and pulling out features that included in them.
Yes No

Summary
Overall, I am pleased with the results that came about because of the audience feedback questionnaire. By distributing them to a sample that all fall under our target audience, it meant that we could get an accurate perception as to what our target audience thought of our products. It seems that strong areas across all three tasks were the authenticity of each product. There were many results that suggested that we had done a good amount of research and planning in order to create 3 authentic products. However, it seems that an area that could be improved was the editing and manipulation of the sound levels. On the radio trailer, 72% of those asked deemed the sound levels to be inconsistent. This would definitely be an area that we would look to improve should we do the task again. We could have improved the sound levels by checking a couple of things. The first thing we could have done was ensure that our knowledge of final cut express was more developed before we started the task. At times, I found our knowledge stretched, and sometimes we struggled with some of the features, so we could perhaps have watched a YouTube tutorial or something like that. Secondly, I think we could have ensured that the final exported version was correct. We played it out of the computer, but upon playing it out of the headphones, a certain part of it only played out of one ear muff. This was because we didnt pan centre all of the volume.
