QUESTIONS TO STUDY FOR THE QUIZ

Pointers:
1. To study for the quiz, answer the following questions. The answers to these
questions will be on the lecture’s notes and your own notes.
2. To get the lecture’s notes, go to the course blog at http://indo11.blogspot.com/.
3. The quiz will consist of 20 questions from these. You will have to answer only 15
from them. You may answer all 20 if you have the time. You will have 30
minutes in total for each quiz.
4. Grade: each correct answer will get 1 point. One number can have more than 1
correct answer. The most points you could get for this quiz is 50.
5. Suggestion: study with a friend, or in groups. You will answer the questions faster
and share each other’s notes.

The Government:
1. What country left a mark in the Indonesian laws? Which laws are they?
2. What country the Indonesians have considered “cruel”? Why? Give two
examples.
3. When did Indonesia gain independence? Who was the president at the time of the
independence?
4. How long did the first president rule? What do you remember about the transition
to the second president? Mention at least two important facts about it.
5. How long did the second president rule? What changes did he bring to the
country?
6. How did the second president leave its presidency? What year was it? What had
caused the change of government?
7. Is there freedom of press in Indonesia? Please explain. Keep in mind the changes
on this issue with the changes in the administration.
8. Name the book that we discussed in class and the name of the author. Recall the
issues around his arrest.
9. Why is a constitution important in a country like Indonesia and the United States?
10. What you do you know about the US Constitution?
11. How many of you are eligible to vote, and how many of you have exercised your
right to vote? Why did you or did you not vote? Please explain.

13. How do you think it is different in Indonesia?

1. What is the name of the author of “My apologies in the name of experience’ and
“The Mute Soliloquy”?
2. Why was he imprisoned for 14 years and two months?
3. What was his comment about the accusations?
4. Why did he think that the Indonesian authorities were no different than the kings
from the kingdom past?
5. Why is he considered a very good writer? Please explain.
6. What is your answer to the following question that he posted? “What would
happen to me if my voice, my sole means of communication, were to be taken
from me? Is it possible to take from a man his right to speak to himself?
7. What do you remember about Goenawan Mohamad?
8. Please comment on what he said in the interview that you read: “If you're an
editor, you have to assume the fear yourself, or [keep it in] a very small circle
around you. You cannot spread the fear. You should not, so that reporters can do
anything they want to do, writers too. But editors should be very cautious. So

The school system:

1. What types of schools are there in Indonesia? How different are they in terms of
costs?
2. What is a ‘pesantren’? Who can study at the ‘pesantren’? Who funded these
institutions?
3. What do you remember from the reading about “pesantren”?
4. If you are asked to talk about schools in Indonesia, what would be your answer
based on what you have learned in class?
5. How different is it with what you experienced in the U.S.? What are the thoughts
that came to mind after you learned about education in Indonesia?
6. How do parents have to deal with cost of living in Indonesia, when they have 3 to
5 kids? Recall the exercise we did in class.
7. When it comes to education, what privileges do you think you have as a non-
Indonesian? Please give examples.
8. Comment on what Goenawan Mohamad said about the following: “Indonesians
invest so much in the education of their children. That's the only way to have a
guarantee for the future of the family, such an uncertain future, unless they
believe it. The job-oriented atmosphere in the university is always strong,
increasingly so, they say, because of the economy.”
9. How do you think the Indonesian government could improve the education in
Indonesia? Please explain.
10. What do you think about child labor in Indonesia? Please explain.
