What is a Line?
MGX 8880
MGX 8880
- Line is the physical transport facility. - Regardless of SM, all lines configured in the same way. - Can carry any type of traffic:ATM,Frame Relay, voice and data circuits - Referred to as bay.line (1 = upper bay, 2 = lower bay, lines depend on card type).

Ports
MGX 8880
- Port is the logical interface between AXSM and CPE/another switch. - Usually one port per line, but could be more than one for virtual trunking. - Signalling protocol on port defines relationship with attached device. - E.g. UNI 3.1 to CPE such as a router, PNNI 1.0 to another switch.

Ports
Port Characteristics: Logical port number card Bay.line - The logical port number uniquely identifies the port on the module (1-60) - The port is associated with a physical line
Guaranteed bandwidth - The port is guaranteed a minimum amount of bandwidth on the line Maximum bandwidth on the line SCT ID Interface type - VPI - The port is permitted a maximum amount of bandwidth - The SCT defines the default characteristics of the connections that terminate on the port - The interface type defines the cell header and the relationship between the port and the attached device. E.g. UNI, NNI, and virtual NNI (VNNI). - The VPI value for virtual trunks

Partitions
- On the 8880, the PNNI controller is on the PXM45. - Each controller is allocated resources on a logical port (partitioning).
Presentation_ID
Cisco Confidential
14
Partitions
Port resources include: - Min guaranteed and max allowable % of the total port b/w that the controller can allocate in the ingress and egress directions. Sum of the min b/w should not > 100%. - VPI/VCI range that the controller can assign to connections (no overlap between controllers). - Min guaranteed and max allowable number of connections that the controller can add. Sum of the min number of cons should not exceed total cons supported by the port group. When con request received by port, above conditions checked before con is accepted.
Presentation_ID

15
Partitions
When con request received by port, resources checked before the con is accepted.
Example 1: 50 PNNI connections are using 45 percent of the bandwidth on port 2. A new connection request is received. The new connection requires 5 percent of the port bandwidth. Result? Because the min guaranteed b/w (30% for ingress and egress) has been exceeded, you cannot assume that the con will be successful. If there is available b/w on the port to support the con, it will be added providing the VPI and VCI values are within the configured range.

16
Partitions
When con request received by port, resources checked before the con is accepted.
Example 2: 50 PNNI connections are using 45 percent of the bandwidth on port 2. A new connection request is received. The new connection requires 20 percent of the port bandwidth. Result? If this con is added, the max b/w allowed for PNNI connections (60%) will be exceeded. Regardless of the available bandwidth on the port, the connection is rejected.

The pairing of partition ID and controller ID must be the same across all interfaces. In this situation, the interface number uniquely identifies the partition. For example, on a AXSM card with two UNIs and two NNIs, you could specify:
Logical interface 1 (on line 1), partition ID 1, controller ID 2 Logical interface 2 (on line 2), partition ID 1, controller ID 2 Logical interface 3 (on line 3), partition ID 1, controller ID 2 Logical interface 4 (on line 4), partition ID 1, controller ID 2

The card and port SCT files reside on the PXM hard drive. An SCT must be on the harddrive before you can assign it to a card or port. You can have up to 255 SCT files on yourMGX gateway. You must use the Cisco WAN Manager (CWM) station to create and modify an SCT file. Default files are preloaded with the MGX firmware.

What is PNNI ?
PNNI Private Network-to-Network Interface Routing and signalling protocol Routing protocol is a dynamic source-based link-state protocol similar to Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) Signaling protocol is based on User-Network Interface Version 4.0 (UNI 4.0) Routing protocol runs all the time, even if connections are not present Signaling protocol is only used for call setup and teardown, routing, and rerouting.

SPVC provisioning
SPVCs in MGX networks are established by a manual process, either by using CLI, or by using CWM station. Uses a two ended model: Master endpoint: Endpoint responsible for initiating routing of the call (calling) Slave endpoint: Endpoint on which the route terminates (called).
