Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Exodus 34:2935, 2 Corinthians 3:124:2, Luke 9:2843a February 10, 2013 Transfiguration of Our Lord In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Today is the last Sunday of Epiphany. Epiphany is the five-week portion of our church calendar when we remember how Christ came into the world. Today, as the last Sunday of Epiphany, we celebrate and remember the Transfiguration of Jesuswhen Jesus comes out as the Christ. Up until this point in Lukes story, other people have recognized Jesus as Christ. Up until this point, Jesus has tried to keep his divine nature on the down low. Then, he and three of his friends go up on a mountainside to pray. Its here, on this mountaintop, along with Elijah, Moses, and three sleepy disciples, that God proclaims Jesus to be the chosen one. God claims Jesus as His ownJesus is divine. And it is at this moment in the Biblical narrative that we know, without a doubt, that Jesus is the Christthat Jesus is at once human and also Godthat God came to us in human formthat God entered into the human story through Jesus. The good news is that God continues to be with us today. God is with us. Its reassuring and life giving, yet I cant help but think that we have a tendency to respond to this good news like Peter. Sometimes it seems that it would be easier if Jesus had just stayed up on that mountaintop with Elijah and Moses. Sometimes it might seem easier to have those three prophets all in one place, so that when weneed them, we can go for a consultation. But thats not what happened. After the transfiguration of Jesus, he and his disciples came down from the mountain. Jesus the Christ joins us in the messiness of our daily lives. God doesnt stay in a nice safe location far away on a mountaintop or in our case this church. God incarnate joins us in the daily challenges of life.

At the same time, God incarnate doesnt just join us to comfort, support, and make us feel better. God came down from that mountain to heal the sick, and strengthen the fainthearted. God came down from that mountain to support the weak, help the suffering, and feed the hungry. God came down from that mountain to speak truth to power. God came down from that mountain to teach us new ways to live more peaceably with everyone, not just our brothers and sisters in Christ. Brothers and sisters, as we end our time of Epiphany and turn our attention to the Lenten season, I encourage you, both as individuals and as a church, to think about how you can celebrate God coming to us in our daily lives. I ask you to consider how we can come down from that mountaintop with Jesus, and join in His divine mission to care for the sick, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the suffering, feed the hungry, speak truth to power, and help us live more peaceably with everyone. As we continue our faith journey together as a church and answer these questions, there is no doubt that we will reflect Gods love to the world that we know through Jesus the Christand thanks be to God for that. Amen.

Luke Rske-Metcalfe La Iglesia Luterana del Buen Pastor xodo 34:29-35, 2 Corintios 3:12-4:02, Lucas 9:28-43a 10 de febrero 2013 - Transfiguracin de Nuestro Seor En el nombre del Creador, Redentor y Sustentador, Amn. Hoy es el ltimo domingo de Epifana. Epifana es la porcin de cinco semanas de nuestro calendario de la iglesia cuando recordamos cmo Cristo vino al mundo. Hoy como el ltimo domingo de Epifana, celebramos y recordamos la Transfiguracin de Jess...cuando Jess sale como el Cristo. Hasta este punto en la historia de Lucas, otras personas han reconocido a Jess como Cristo. Hasta este punto, Jess ha tratado de mantener su naturaleza divina en la parte baja. Luego, l y tres de sus amigos van al monte a orar. Es aqu, en la cima de esta montaa, junto con Elas, Moiss y tres discpulos dormidos, que Dios proclama que Jess es el elegido. Dios reclama a Jess como suyo... Jess es divino. Y es en este momento en la narracin bblica sabemos, sin lugar a dudas, que Jess es el Cristo... que Jess es a la vez humano y tambin Dios ... que Dios vino a nosotros en forma humana ... que Dios entr en la historia humana a travs de Jess. La buena nueva es que Dios sigue estando hoy con nosotros. Dios est con nosotros. Es tranquilizador y dador de vida, sin embargo no puedo dejar de pensar que tenemos una tendencia a responder a estas buenas nuevas como Pedro. A veces parece que sera ms fcil si solo Jess se hubiera quedado en esa cima de la montaa con Elas y Moiss. A veces podra parecer ms fcil tener esos tres profetas en un solo lugar, para que cuando los necesitemos, podamos ir para consultarlos. Pero eso no es lo que pas. Despus de la transfiguracin de Jess, l y sus discpulos bajaron de la montaa. Jess el Cristo nos une en el desorden de nuestra vida cotidiana. Dios no se queda en un lugar seguro, agradable lejos de la cima de la montaa - en nuestro caso - esta iglesia. Dios encarnado nos une a los retos diarios de la vida.

Al mismo tiempo, Dios encarnado no slo nos une para consolar, apoyar y hacernos sentir mejor. Dios baj del monte para sanar a los enfermos, y fortalecer los pusilnimes. Dios baj del monte para sostener a los dbiles, ayudar a los que sufren, y alimentar a los hambrientos. Dios baj del monte a decir la verdad al poder. Dios baj del monte para ensearnos nuevas formas de vivir ms en paz con todos, no slo con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Hermanos y hermanas, al terminar el tiempo de Epifana y centrar nuestra atencin en el tiempo de Cuaresma, os nimo, como individuos y como iglesia, a pensar en cmo se puede celebrar a Dios que viene a nosotros en nuestra vida diaria. Les pido considerar cmo podemos descender de esa cima de la montaa con Jess, y participar en su misin divina de cuidar a los enfermos, fortalecer los pusilnimes, sostener a los dbiles, ayudar a los que sufren, alimentar a los hambrientos, a decir la verdad al poder, y ayudarnos a vivir ms en paz con todos. A medida que continuamos nuestro camino de fe juntos como iglesia y respondemos a estas preguntas, no hay duda de que vamos a reflejar el amor de Dios al mundo que conocemos a travs de Jess el Cristo... y gracias a Dios por eso. Amen.
