SUBJECT:
POWER TURBINE
OUTER COUPLING
NUT INSPECTION
The Model 250 Series Engines have accumulated approximately 23 million flight hours since 1966. During this time there have been instances wherein corrosion has attacked the power turbine coupling nut (P/N 6846278 or 6871338). This condition usually occurs in extremely humid areas which have abnormal amounts of sulphur in the atmosphere. Failure of this nut would result in disengagement of the power turbine curvic coupling, resulting in possible N2 overspeed and turbine disk failure. To alleviate this condition of corrosion, an aluminum corrosion resistant paint has been released to the nut, (Ref. P/N 6846278, Change G) as shown in Figure 1. Production and overhauled engines now incorporate the painted nut; however, corrosion has attacked the coated nut. Therefore, is required a) a mandatory as follows: inspection of coated and uncoated nuts
For engines with turbine sections having more than 400 hours or one calendar year time in service since installation in an aircraft, initial compliance must be accomplished within the next 100 hours or 60 days time in service, whichever occurs first. For engines with turbine sections having less than 400 hours and less than one calendar year time in service since installation in an aircraft, initial compliance must be accomplished within 500 hours or one year time in service since installation in an aircraft, whichever occurs first. For each turbine section incorporating an acceptable uncoated or coated coupling nut, repatitive compliance is required at intervals not to exceed 500 hours or one calendar year time since last inspection, ,whichever occurs first.

Compliance with the following Commercial Engine Bulletins which install PIN 6890531 or P/N 23001801 Power Turbine Coupling Nuts removes the inspection requirement: 250-Cl8 250-C2O/C2OB 250-815G 250-81718178 CEB-193/207 CEB-112011158 CEB-53/76 CEB-108811134

The nut is located approximately one and one half inches, forward of the fourth-stage turbine wheel inside the center section of the exhaust collector support. (See Figure 2.1 By using a borescope, some type of fiberoptic equipment, or a small mirror inserted between the forward face of the fourth-stage turbine wheel and the inner section of the exhaust collector support, it is possible to examine the condition of the nut. NOTE: The following vendors however, any acceptable the operator. can supply alternate acceptable borescopes; device can be selected

An alternative way to inspect the condition of the nut consists of using a high intensity light source and a small non-magnifying mirror. It is possible to examine the condition of the nut by inserting the mirror approximately halfway inside the exhaust collector, holding the light source in a position such that the light falls upon the nut, and positioning the mirror until the nut is in view. With the equipment inserted, slowly rotate the fourth-stage turbine wheel by hand so that the full 3600 area of the nut can be viewed. Uncoated or coated nuts will show a grainy textured riurface created by the corrosion attack. (See Figure 3.) 1) 2) If the rotation, corrosion is continuous around the nut must be replaced. the (See full 3600 of Figure 3.)
If there is only local, intermittent spots of corrosion around the full 360 rotation, the nut should be continued in service. (See Figure 4.) Reinspect acceptable coated and uncoated nuts per step (Cl.
