The Oil & Gas Industry, which is driven by technology, continues to evolve and globalize. Multi-staged hydraulic fracturing (fracking) of tite gas and oil formations is completely altering the North American supply dynamic! But at what cost? Alumni, staff, students and friends of the Schulich School of Engineering are invited to join a knowledgeable and diverse panel of the nations experts for a lively discussion of fracking. Panelists will address supply-side game changing potential, competitiveness with more conventional supplies, significance to North American energy independence, regulatory isuues, design and execution considerations in fracking, water use and environmental considerations. Participants will engage with panelists at the reception before the presentations, during a facilitated Q&A period and informally after the presentations. Appetizers and refreshments are included (cash bar). Speaking to begin at 6:30 pm following the reception.

DR DALE A. LECKIE PhD, PGeol - Moderator

Chief Geologist, Nexen Inc.
Dr. Dale Leckie joined Nexen Inc. as Chief Geologist in 1998. Dale is a specialist in petroleum geology, focusing on sedimentology, marine and non-marine sequence stratigraphy and unconventional hydrocarbons. He has published and lectured widely with distinction on these subjects. Dale has 30 years of experience commencing with Petro-Canada in 1983 in the Research Lab, later moving downtown into exploration. In 1985 he joined the Geological Survey of Canada as a Research Scientist integrating outcrop and subsurface studies of hydrocarbon bearing sediments in Western Canada. At Nexen, Dale has recently developed an interest in the debate on hydraulic fracturing and in 2012 he assembled a major review on the Science of Fracking Society Issues and Perception that he has presented numerous times in Canada and globally. Dale received a BSc from University of Alberta (1977) and an MSc (1979) and PhD (1983) from McMaster University. Dale has co-edited five books for the AAPG, SEPM, and CSPG, most recently a special publication by the CSPG on Shale Gas of the Horn River Basin. He is a past President of SEPM and current President-elect of CSPG.

ROBERT J. COX BSc, PEng Panelist

Vice President, Canadian Geographic Region, Trican Well Service Ltd.
Mr. Cox is Vice President, Canadian Geographic Region, where he oversees all aspects of management and operations within Trican Canada. Rob has been with Trican since 2000, previously holding the positions of General Manager, Canadian Geographic Region, Manager of Technical Services, Product Development Manager, and Coiled Tubing Specialist. Prior to joining Trican, Mr. Cox worked with the Alberta Provincial Government in various reservoir engineering, production engineering, and management roles. Rob graduated in 1981 from the University of Calgary with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering.

SARAH K. COX MA Panelist

Acting Executive Director, Sierra Club BC
Ms Cox joined the Sierra Club BC in 2006 where she currently has dual roles: Acting Executive Director and lead on the Flathead River Valley campaign. Before joining the Sierra Club, Sarah was an award-winning magazine writer with a focus on business, the environment and globalization. She has appeared on various television and radio shows and has also worked as a part-time consultant for government and non-profits. Prior to that, Sarah was a staff reporter at the Vancouver Sun and Ottawa Citizen. Sarah received her M.A. in Political Science with a focus on international development policy from York University in 1992. She has a Graduate Diploma in Latin American and Caribbean Studies and is fluent in Spanish.

PETER H. HOWARD BSc, PEng - Panelist

President and CEO, Canadian Energy Research Institute
Peter Howard joined the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI) in November 2004 and currently holds the position of President and CEO. Mr. Howard has over 40 years of experience specializing in engineering and technical applications in the oil and gas industry. Prior to joining CERI, Peter held several positions, including Senior Associate with J.R. Lacey International, President of Arundel Information Systems, partner with LOGIS Data Systems Ltd., and Vice President with Computer Research Associates Ltd. Mr. Howard is a co-author of the Gas Energy Management Model, the LOGIS data retrieval system and has acted in a senior consulting role for numerous companies with regard to computer modeling, data mining and computer application development. Mr. Howard holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta and is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta.

ROBERT SPITZER MSc, PGeol Panelist

Vice President Exploration, Apache Canada Ltd
Robert Spitzer is the Vice President Exploration at Apache Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of Apache Corporation. He has 32 years of experience in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Mr Spitzer joined Apache in 1999 as the Manager of Exploration responsible for the exploration and development drilling programs. Rob has led teams responsible for the discovery of Ladyfern in 2000, Horn River in 2004 and Liard in 2009. Prior to Robs employment at Apache, he spent 18 years with Shell Canada Ltd. His role there included working on the CO2 flood at Midale, exploring throughout Canada and developing and managing Shell Canadas New Ventures organization. Rob graduated in 1981 with a Masters degree from McMaster University. He has been involved in Horn River exploration and development since 2001 and Chairs the Horn River Basin Producers Group, which he formed in 2007.

THERESA L. WATSON BENG, PEng - Panelist

Board Member, Energy Resources Conservation Board
Ms Watson was appointed a Board Member of the Energy Resources Conservation Board in 2009 accountable to the Government of Alberta and the public. In this capacity Theresa adjudicates on oil, gas, coal and oil sands applications and, provides direction and approval of regulatory changes. Theresa is the Chair of the ERCB Audit and Finance Committee. Theresa began her career in the field with Mobil Oil in 1986 with postings in Alberta and Saskatchewan. In 1992 she started an independent consulting company; T.L. Watson & Associates Inc. offering expertise to the oil and gas industry. Theresa has extensive local and international experience in longterm liability management, wellbore integrity, regulatory compliance, wellbore construction and the repair of problem wells, including severe gas migration and abandonments. Recently Theresa has been heavily involved with the International Energy Agency as a member of the Wellbore Integrity Network investigating CO2 storage potential. Theresa Watson received her Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) Degree from McGill University in 1986. She has authored and presented several papers dealing with gas migration repair, cementing techniques and wellbore failure prediction.
