Dexter graduate
earns Hollywood
editing award
By Kathleen Murphy
Heritage Media

Dexter native Michael

Smith is living the
California dream, pursuing his passion for film
editing and earning honors along the way.
Smith, a 2004 graduate
of Dexter High School,
received the Student
Editing Award at the
63rd Annual American
Cinema Editors Eddie
Awards held on Feb. 16 in
Beverly Hills, Calif. The
awards are a precursor to
Sundays Oscars.
To win his Eddie,
Smith beat out roughly
100 other student film
editors from across the
nation. The students all
received the same footage from the American
Cinema Editors and sent

back their version to be

judged by a panel of professional film editors. The
entries were pared down
to three finalists.
During the awards
show at the Beverly Hills
Hilton Hotel, Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight
presented Smith with his
Eddie.
His proud parents,
Gary and Donna Smith of
Dexter, said Michael was
shocked to hear his name
called. Hes a quiet kind
of guy, Donna said.
Michael is a first-year
fellow at the American
Film Institute in Los
Angeles. Before being
accepted as a fellow at the
American Film Institute,
he submitted an original
three-minute film.

Speedy drivers warned to slow down

By Sean Dalton

The message from village officials to residents and those traveling through the village is clear:
slow down before you hurt yourself
or someone else.
Motorists rate of speed in the
village proper has been a topic
of discussion at village council

resulting at one point in taking special consideration to boost traffic
enforcement at contract time with

The traffic study found that
