Stretching
Im stiff. No, I like to have fun, but age and multiple back injuries have left their impact. I didnt realize how stiff I was until I went to premier physical therapist and member of our church, Greg Collins. A long-time, fervent golfer, he understands how to use stretching exercises to work every part of your body. I didnt realize how tight my thighs and hamstrings were! As I continue to struggle with daily discipline, I try to think: tuck, hold, arch, pull, etc. I hook the strap onto my leg or I bend against a wall. All real athletes (unlike Methuselah Wicker) take this seriously. Loving golf as I do, I want a better hip, waist, back, and shoulder turn (the left shoulder behind the ball, please). I just imagine myself loading up and hitting through at impact. Now I am not about to get a pink driver like Bubba Watson or adopt an Irish accent like Rory McIlroy. Nor will I use a stretching pole to work on my swing like pro Dustin Johnson in order to increase range of motion to hit it long and strong. God is constantly trying to stretch us, pushing us out of our comfort zone, challenging our stiffness that we might move forward in expectant faith. He wants us to get out of the sand traps and into the Fathers fairway. Some of you who are older think that you are too stiff to change or accomplish anything. Remember that Michelangelo completed the Pieta at age 87. Colonel Sanders launched an empire well past senior discount time. Most importantly, we want to be like Caleb, Joshuas sidekick, who fully followed the Lord in his 80s and wanted one of the toughest, tallest mountains in Canaan to conquer. We meet Steve Silver, founder of Mens Golf Fellowship, this weekend. Guys, if you are near or in retirement, you need to read his book, New Man Journey, along with my Forward, to be challenged to find true fulfillment. God wants us to expect Ephesians 3:20 answers to prayer, as He does exceedingly abundant above all that we could ask or think. He wants us to pray and believe with a Jabez-like audacity: Bless me indeed and enlarge my border (1 Chronicles 4:10). Our love must abound still more and more (Philippians 1:9). We must be willing to step out to go to the land that God will show us like Abraham (Genesis 12:1). Also, ask God to help you to give financially since there is no limit to the resources for His house (1 Chronicles 22:16). The hope of the gospel is increasing to more and more (Colossians 1:6) as we depend on Him to get us out of our comfort zone to share Him with others. Your stretching may be uncomfortable at first, but it shouldnt be painful, only joyful. Oh God, extend Your Hand in our midst (Acts 4:30-31). Stretch!!!
